How did you actually choose to work in the UX field?

Como que foi a sua jornada para realmente escolher? É isso que eu quero.

How was your journey to really choose? That's what I want.

Cara, é engraçado. Muita gente me pergunta isso.

Dude, it's funny. A lot of people ask me that.

Como que eu migrei para a UX? Como que eu apliquei a UX pela primeira vez no projeto?

How did I migrate to UX? How did I apply UX for the first time in the project?

Mas a verdade é que essa coisa de entrar para a UX ou aplicar a UX é uma coisa que a gente pode considerar mais recentemente.

But the truth is that this thing of entering into UX or applying UX is something we can consider more recently.

Atualmente, que você já tem uma área de UX estabelecida, você tem pessoas que migram para a UX e decidem entrar na área de UX.

Currently, since you already have an established UX area, you have people who migrate to UX and decide to enter the field of UX.

Quando eu comecei, a coisa foi muito gradual.

When I started, it was very gradual.

Não tinha essa coisa de decidir ou não.

There was no such thing as deciding or not.

Não entrar para a área de UX.

Do not enter the UX field.

Comecei a trabalhar como web designer.

I started working as a web designer.

Trabalhando como web designer, eu comecei, com o tempo, a ter contato com algumas das disciplinas que são consideradas base do que é a área de UX hoje.

Working as a web designer, I gradually started to come into contact with some of the disciplines that are considered the foundation of what UX is today.

Como usabilidade, como design de interação.

As usability, as interaction design.

Atuei bastante com arquitetura de informação, acessibilidade.

I have worked a lot with information architecture and accessibility.

Então, são disciplinas centradas no usuário e que formaram a base da área de UX.

So, they are user-centered disciplines that formed the foundation of the UX field.

Foi um processo muito gradual, natural, assim.

It was a very gradual, natural process, like that.

Eu já trabalhava com essas coisas.

I was already working with these things.

E eu lembro que um amigo meu, o Bernardo de Luna, ele me ligou uma vez para falar assim,

And I remember that a friend of mine, Bernardo de Luna, called me once to say,

cara, estou me mudando para São Paulo, né?

Dude, I'm moving to São Paulo, right?

Porque ele morava no Rio.

Because he lived in Rio.

Sim.

Yes.

Estou trabalhando em uma startup e a gente está precisando de alguém aqui na startup para trabalhar aqui comigo.

I am working at a startup and we need someone here at the startup to work here with me.

Alguém que seja muito bom em UX.

Someone who is very good at UX.

Cheguei, enquanto falava com ele, joguei no Google, UX.

I arrived, and while I was talking to him, I typed UX into Google.

Ah, não sei o que é UX, é isso, centrais de usuários, habilidade, não sei o que.

Ah, I don’t know what UX is, that’s it, user centers, skills, I don’t know what.

É, eu acho que eu trabalho com isso, posso trabalhar.

E foi a primeira vez que alguém me chamou para trabalhar com o termo UX, né?

And it was the first time someone invited me to work with the term UX, right?

E quando eu vi a descrição no Google das coisas que se referiam ao UX, eram tudo coisas que eu já trabalhava, basicamente.

And when I saw the description on Google of the things that referred to UX, they were all things I was already working on, basically.

Aí eu lembro que eu fui lá para falar com eles, troquei uma ideia sobre o processo de trabalho e tudo mais.

Then I remember that I went there to talk to them, exchanged some ideas about the work process and everything else.

E comecei a trabalhar com o UX, né?

And I started working with UX, right?

Mas já era uma coisa que eu já vinha fazendo de muito antes, assim.

But it was already something I had been doing long before, like that.

Masca, exatamente.

Masca, exactly.

Eu, desde cedinho, já fazia, trabalhava bastante com parte de web design.

Since early on, I was already doing a lot of work in web design.

Antes mesmo de eu até sonhar em fazer design, eu já trabalhava numa agência como front-end, fazendo algumas coisas.

Even before I even dreamed of doing design, I was already working at an agency as a front-end, doing some things.

E muito do que eu fazia já era realmente pensando na experiência do usuário, mas nem existia o termo UX.

Much of what I did was already really thinking about the user experience, but the term UX didn't even exist.

E a gente já estava realmente pensando no usuário, pensando na experiência dele, mesmo sem já ser um termo popular,

And we were already really thinking about the user, thinking about their experience, even when it wasn't a popular term yet,

uma coisa que o pessoal realmente quer aplicar hoje em dia.

One thing that people really want to apply nowadays.

E é interessante, sim, porque, na verdade, o termo UX foi cunhado lá pelo Don Norman, pelo menos dizem que foi o Don Norman, né?

And it's interesting, yes, because, in fact, the term UX was coined by Don Norman, at least they say it was Don Norman, right?

Ali no comecinho dos anos 90.

Back at the beginning of the 90s.

A usabilidade veio lá da interação humano-computador, que veio da ergonomia e vem lá de muitos anos, década de 50.

Usability came from human-computer interaction, which came from ergonomics and has been around for many years, since the 1950s.

Você já tinha estudos nessa linha.

You already had studies in that area.

A arquitetura de informação também foi um termo cunhado lá nos anos 70.

Information architecture was also a term coined back in the 1970s.

E as próprias ferramentas de UX que a gente usa hoje, o de design thinking, você vê elas sendo utilizadas na área de design desde lá da Bauhaus, né?

And the very UX tools that we use today, like design thinking, you can see them being used in the field of design since the Bauhaus, right?

Então, a verdade é que a coisa vai se renovando, vai mudando as terminologias, mas...

So, the truth is that things keep renewing themselves, the terminologies keep changing, but...

Mas, no fim das contas, acaba sendo o mesmo também.

But, in the end, it turns out to be the same too.

É, um pouco do mesmo, assim.

Yeah, a bit of the same, like that.

Por isso que eu fico com essa transição, assim, de, ó, mudei para UX agora, né?

Mais aqui no Brasil como profissão, ali no final dos anos 2000 para 2010, ali.

Mas, enfim, era uma coisa que eu já fazia há muito tempo, né?

But anyway, it was something I had been doing for a long time, right?

Eu sei que o nosso professor, o Victor Kreid, ele falou pra gente que ele é formado em desenho industrial pela Unesp.

I know that our teacher, Victor Kreid, told us that he graduated in industrial design from Unesp.

Que nada mais é do que o design hoje em dia.

Which is nothing more than design nowadays.

Mas antigamente não tinha realmente um termo específico para design digital.

But back then, there really wasn't a specific term for digital design.

Não, é engraçado.

No, it's funny.

Para o registro de cursos, né?

For course registration, right?

Para você fazer o registro de cursos de graduação, você não tinha a terminologia design.

To register undergraduate courses, you did not have the terminology design.

Então, se adaptou, né?

So, you adapted, right?

Para usar como desenho industrial, mas era a mesma coisa.

To use as an industrial design, but it was the same thing.

Mas tem diferença?

But is there a difference?

Nesses três anos por cá, você vê diferença no UX?

Como a gente lida com ele como designer?

Quer dizer, o UX de dez anos atrás é o mesmo UX de hoje?

Eu acho que o pessoal no...

I think that the people in...

Eu acho que tem um pouco mais de importância que as pessoas dão para isso hoje em dia que acho que não era tanto antigamente.

I believe it has a bit more importance than people give it these days, which I don't think was the case in the past.

Mas me diz aí, o que você acha, Edu?

Na verdade, eu acho que esse é um processo natural de evolução do mercado.

A gente vai vendo empresas cada vez mais com maturidade de UX, né?

We keep seeing companies with more and more UX maturity, right?

Quando eu falo maturidade de UX, não estou nem falando maturidade da empresa, tempo decente.

When I talk about UX maturity, I’m not even talking about the maturity of the company, a decent amount of time.

Estou falando maturidade nesses processos centrados.

I am talking about maturity in these centered processes.

Não estou falando maturidade do usuário, né?

I'm not talking about user maturity, right?

Tem vários estudos sobre UX maturity, né?

There are several studies on UX maturity, right?

Falando aí em maturidade UX.

Speaking of UX maturity.

E a quantidade de empresas que tinha dez anos atrás que tinha uma boa maturidade, que acreditava nesse processo, que reconhecia valor, era muito menor do que hoje, né?

And the number of companies that had ten years ago that had good maturity, that believed in this process, that recognized value, was much smaller than today, right?

Então hoje você vê um número muito maior de empresas que tem contato, que tem essa maturidade.

So today you see a much larger number of companies that have contact, that have this maturity.

Você já tem uma área mais estabelecida que permite as pessoas poderem olhar e falar,

You already have a more established area that allows people to look and talk.

eu quero migrar para UX.

I want to migrate to UX.

UX não é uma coisa que foi acontecendo gradualmente, como no meu caso.

UX is not something that happened gradually, like in my case.

E você tem os profissionais também com uma maior maturidade.

And you also have professionals with greater maturity.

Você tem muito mais material de estudo do que há dez anos atrás.

You have much more study material than you did ten years ago.

Você tem muito mais cursos, você tem muito mais livros, muito mais eventos, discussões.

You have many more courses, you have many more books, many more events, discussions.

Então é natural que a área vai evoluindo.

So it is natural that the area will evolve.

E além disso, eu vejo que a gente foi passando muito por um processo de divergência e convergência, né?

And moreover, I see that we went through a lot of a process of divergence and convergence, right?

Assim como eu falo do processo do Dodd-Bowl Diamond, né?

Just like I talk about the Dodd-Bowl Diamond process, right?

Tão conhecida.

So well-known.

E para quem trabalha com UX, que mostra lá a divergência e a convergência.

And for those who work with UX, it shows the divergence and the convergence there.

Você abre e você fecha ali o processo.

You open and you close the process there.

E, na verdade, assim, ali no meio dos anos 2000, a gente tinha uma coisa mais segmentada, né?

And, in fact, back in the mid-2000s, we had a more segmented thing, right?

Em termos de profissões.

In terms of professions.

Você tinha um web designer ou designer de interface.

You had a web designer or interface designer.

Você tinha analista de usabilidade, arquiteto de informação, designer de interação.

You had a usability analyst, information architect, interaction designer.

Você tinha ali várias profissões que se juntavam, né?

You had several professions that came together, right?

Até front-end mesmo ali, que se juntavam para formar.

Even front-end right there, which came together to form.

O todo da coisa, da construção do produto.

The whole thing, the construction of the product.

Quando começou a se popularizar o termo UX, meio que num dado momento, tudo virou UX, né?

When the term UX started to become popular, at some point, everything turned into UX, right?

Então, todo mundo que era analista de usabilidade virou UX designer.

So, everyone who was a usability analyst became a UX designer.

Era arquiteto de informação, virou UX designer.

He was an information architect, became a UX designer.

Era web designer, virou UX designer.

He was a web designer, now he's a UX designer.

Tem até uma história interessante que eu lembro que, mais ou menos nessa época ali,

There's even an interesting story that I remember from around that time,

dos anos 2010, 2011 e tal, eu encontrei um amigo.

from the years 2010, 2011 and such, I met a friend.

Eu lembro que trabalhava no UOL e ele fazia parte de um time de arquitetura.

I remember that I worked at UOL and he was part of an architecture team.

Ele fazia parte de um time de arquitetura de formação no UOL, né?

He was part of a training architecture team at UOL, right?

Várias empresas tinham times de arquitetura de formação, principalmente portábulo de conteúdo, né?

Several companies had architecture formation teams, mainly content portability, right?

E aí eu lembro que a gente estava trocando uma ideia e ele falou, ah, vou deixar um cartão, né?

And then I remember that we were chatting and he said, oh, I'm going to leave a card, right?

Ele entregou um cartãozinho de visita ali e no cartão estava escrito o nome dele, escrito UX designer, né?

He handed over a business card there, and on the card, his name was written, with "UX designer," right?

Eu brinquei assim, falei, ah, você mudou de área?

I joked like this, I said, oh, did you change fields?

Dele, não, por quê?

Him, no, why?

Eu falei, você não era arquiteto de formação?

I said, weren't you an architect by training?

Dele, sou ainda.

I am still his.

Eu falei, ah, mas o seu cartão está escrito UX designer?

I said, oh, but your card says UX designer?

Ah, não, é porque agora mudou de nome as minhas coisas, né?

Oh, no, it's because now my things have changed names, right?

Tudo que era arquitetura de formação.

Everything that was architecture by training.

Agora é chamar de UX designer, né?

Now it's called a UX designer, right?

Nosso departamento mudou de nome todo, mas eu continuo fazendo a mesma coisa.

Our department changed its name completely, but I continue doing the same thing.

Eu vi esse fenômeno acontecer de forma diferente.

I saw this phenomenon happen in a different way.

Pessoas que trabalhavam como analista de usabilidade mudaram o nome para UX designer, web designer também.

People who worked as usability analysts changed their name to UX designer, as did web designers.

E até por isso, inclusive, que a gente vê muitas vagas de emprego pedindo coisas tão distintas, né?

And that's exactly why we see many job openings asking for such different things, right?

Para UX designer.

For UX designer.

Porque você vê, na verdade, algumas vagas que são zoadas mesmo, assim,

Because you see, actually, some job openings are really just a joke, you know, like that,

que a pessoa não sabe o que está pedindo.

that the person does not know what they are asking for.

Mas você vê algumas empresas mais consolidadas que têm vagas para UX designer

But you see some more established companies that have job openings for UX designer.

e quando você vai analisar o que está pedindo, são coisas bem diferentes.

And when you are going to analyze what you are asking for, they are very different things.

Porque, às vezes, uma empresa dessa veio como herança de uma área de arquitetura de formação

Because, sometimes, a company like this comes as an inheritance from a background in architecture.

e o que está pedindo como requisito de UX é muito mais do que se pedia para arquitetura de formação.

And what is being requested as a UX requirement is much more than what was asked for in architectural training.

Outra para usabilidade, outra para design de interação, né?

One for usability, another for interaction design, right?

Até por ser um termo novo e uma área, digamos assim, nova,

Even though it is a new term and an area, so to speak, new,

muitas pessoas nem sabem, assim, dizer.

many people don't even know how to say that.

Exatamente o que se faz em UX designer.

Exactly what is done in UX design.

E também, muitas vezes, não é o próprio designer, uma pessoa da área de design

And also, many times, it is not the designer themselves, a person from the design field.

que vai realmente falar dessa vaga para achar pessoas para trabalhar na empresa.

that will really talk about this position to find people to work for the company.

Muitas vezes, pessoal do RH que não entende realmente o que a pessoa vai precisar fazer no cargo.

Many times, HR people do not really understand what the person will need to do in the position.

Ah, tem muito disso também.

Ah, there’s a lot of that too.

Às vezes, a pessoa fala assim,

Sometimes, a person speaks like this,

putz, olha a vaga dessa empresa, que zoado que eles estão pedindo

Wow, look at this company's job listing, it's ridiculous what they are asking for.

e já julga a empresa como ruim.

and already judges the company as bad.

E, às vezes, a empresa tem uma área de UX estruturada,

And sometimes, the company has a structured UX area,

tem uma liderança, tem um processo, né?

There is leadership, there is a process, right?

Eu sempre falo para as pessoas assim,

I always tell people like this,

meu, dá uma pesquisada sobre a empresa,

Dude, do some research about the company.

sobre quem trabalha lá,

about who works there,

para ver se ela é realmente zoada ou não,

to see if she is really teased or not,

porque, às vezes, é alguém aleatório do RH que criou a descrição da vaga, né?

because sometimes it's a random person from HR who created the job description, right?

Essa semana, me mandaram no LinkedIn falando, assim,

This week, someone messaged me on LinkedIn saying, like,

que tinha uma vaga para UX writer

that had an opening for a UX writer

e, entre os requisitos, tinha que saber Angular, React, Java,

and, among the requirements, one had to know Angular, React, Java,

umas coisas que, simplesmente...

some things that simply...

Eu falei para a moça, expliquei para ela,

I told the young woman, I explained to her,

olha, eu acho que eu não sou UX writer, tá?

Look, I don't think I'm a UX writer, okay?

Então, não me encaixo nessa vaga.

So, I don't fit this position.

E eu também acho que você vai ter dificuldade,

And I also think that you will have difficulty,

porque, olha, você está...

because, look, you are...

Na descrição aqui, está misturando algumas coisas de desenvolvimento

In the description here, it is mixing some things from development.

e não faz sentido, não sei o quê.

We see these job openings emerging with these names, right?

Sempre me deixou com muita dúvida, né?

Pensando nesse aspecto de mudar os nomes, UX,

UX writer, né?

Tudo isso, eu sempre vejo que tem uma categorização comum,

E eu sempre fico muito confusa de onde eu me encaixo.

Porque cada empresa, como você mesmo disse,

cada empresa tem uma herança diferente.

Então, cada aluna acha que determinada experiência tem que saber...

So, each student thinks that a certain experience must be known...

Eu vejo...

Eu vejo várias empresas que querem um profissional júnior com cinco anos de experiência.

I see several companies that want a junior professional with five years of experience.

São umas coisas um pouco absurdas, né?

They're a bit absurd, aren't they?

Então, assim, como será que a gente pode tomar um espaço e falar, então,

So, like, how can we take a space and speak, then,

o júnior, na verdade, não deveria ter cinco anos.

Junior actually shouldn't be five years old.

Acho que um júnior

I think a junior.

não deveria ter cinco anos de experiência, né?

You shouldn't have five years of experience, right?

Então, como você vê esse cenário, assim, nas empresas?

So, how do you see this scenario in companies?

É, primeiro tem essa coisa que vocês falaram, né?

Yeah, first there's that thing you mentioned, right?

De ter várias profissões diferentes.

Of having several different professions.

E, pra mim, UX é muito mais uma cultura do que exatamente uma disciplina, né?

And for me, UX is much more of a culture than exactly a discipline, right?

Na verdade, quando a gente tem vagas de UX designer,

In fact, when we have openings for UX designer,

são vagas, normalmente, mais genéricas, né?

They are usually more general, right?

Que a pessoa que vai executar ali, normalmente, vai fazer um pouquinho de tudo, né?

The person who is going to perform there will usually do a little bit of everything, right?

Hoje, já tem até mais estabelecido isso no papel de designer, né?

Today, it is already more established in the role of a designer, right?

Que é um profissional um pouco mais genérico ou estabelecido, né?

What is a somewhat more generic or established professional, right?

Agora, quando a gente fala dessas denominações, né, de júnior, pleno e sênior,

Now, when we talk about these designations, right, of junior, mid-level, and senior,

é complicado porque, realmente, assim, cada empresa acaba tendo a sua política,

It's complicated because, really, each company ends up having its own policy.

a sua estrutura, não necessariamente as empresas tratam com essa nomenclatura de júnior, pleno e sênior.

In their structure, companies do not necessarily refer to this nomenclature of junior, mid-level, and senior.

Quando eu trabalhei na Conta Azul, a gente tinha assistente nível 1, nível 2 e nível 3, né?

When I worked at Conta Azul, we had level 1, level 2, and level 3 assistants, right?

Assistente nível 1, nível 2 e nível 3, analista nível 1, 2 e 3, especialista nível 1, 2 e 3 e assim por diante, né?

Assistant level 1, level 2, and level 3, analyst level 1, 2, and 3, specialist level 1, 2, and 3, and so on, right?

Então, eram outras segmentações, assim.

So, they were different segments, like that.

Mas, vamos lá, profissional júnior, tá?

But, come on, junior professional, okay?

Muita gente me fala assim,

Many people tell me like this,

Putz, estão querendo contratar um profissional júnior que já saiba de tudo, né?

Wow, they want to hire a junior professional who already knows everything, right?

Profissional júnior tá ali pra aprender.

Junior professionals are there to learn.

Eu falo, não.

I speak, no.

Estagiário tá pra aprender.

An intern is there to learn.

Profissional júnior não tá pra aprender.

A junior professional is not here to learn.

Profissional júnior a gente não espera, não deveria, pelo menos, tá?

We shouldn't expect a junior professional, at least not, okay?

Esperar a experiência, tá?

Wait for the experience, okay?

O profissional júnior, normalmente, pode ter de 0 a 2 anos de experiência, tá?

The junior professional typically has 0 to 2 years of experience, okay?

Ou seja, depende da empresa.

That is, it depends on the company.

Às vezes, a empresa vai pedir um júnior que já tenha um pouquinho de experiência
