— Não sei como me convenceu a participar dessa maluquice, Pedro — resmungou Jonas ao pararem diante da entrada da caverna.

"I don't know how you convinced me to take part in this madness, Pedro," Jonas grumbled as they stopped in front of the cave entrance.

Era tarde da noite e a lua cheia já se encontrava bem alta no céu, refletindo seu brilho no lago que haviam acabado de contornar.

It was late at night and the full moon was already high in the sky, reflecting its glow on the lake they had just circled.

A floresta à sua volta estava silenciosa, provavelmente tão amedrontada quanto Jonas diante do perigo que os aguardava.

The forest around him was silent, probably as frightened as Jonas in the face of the danger that awaited them.

— Deixa de ser frouxo — respondeu Pedro, retirando da bainha a espada enferrujada comprada no mercado.

"Stop being cowardly," replied Pedro, drawing the rusty sword he had bought at the market from its sheath.

Desajeitado, ele sacudiu a lâmina no ar, como se soubesse o que estava fazendo, e depois apontou em direção à caverna.

Clumsily, he shook the blade in the air, as if he knew what he was doing, and then pointed towards the cave.

— Se for o mesmo dragão que matou a princesa Vivian há três anos, nós vamos ficar famosos.

— If it's the same dragon that killed Princess Vivian three years ago, we are going to become famous.

Quem sabe, talvez a rainha até nos nomeie cavernas.

Who knows, maybe the queen will even name us caves.

— Cavaleiros, tudo o que precisamos fazer é entrar aí e matar essa fera.

— Knights, all we need to do is go in there and kill that beast.

— Claro, supondo que ela não nos mate primeiro.

— Sure, assuming she doesn't kill us first.

Jonas ergueu a lanterna para que a chama iluminasse a passagem.

Jonas lifted the lantern so that the flame would light up the passage.

— Olha só o tamanho dessa caverna. Aposto que cabe um dragão bem grande aí dentro.

— Look at the size of this cave. I bet a big dragon could fit in there.

— Ah, não se preocupe, ele deve estar dormindo agora. Vamos entrar em silêncio e pegar ele de surpresa.

— Ah, don't worry, he must be sleeping now. Let's go in quietly and surprise him.

Pode deixar que eu vou na frente, só preciso que você fique de olho e...

You can count on me to go ahead, I just need you to keep an eye out and...

Um som gorgolejante ecoou de dentro dele.

A gurgling sound echoed from within him.

— Você ouviu isso?

— Did you hear that?

Antes que Jonas tivesse a chance de confirmar, um rugido ensurdecedor reverberou pelas paredes da caverna,

Before Jonas had a chance to confirm, a deafening roar reverberated through the walls of the cave,

propagando-se por toda a floresta e fazendo os pássaros revoarem para longe.

Toda a coragem que Pedro demonstrar até então se esvaiu.

All the courage that Pedro had shown up until then had vanished.

E por pouco, ele não deixou outras coisas se esvaírem junto.

And almost, he didn't let other things slip away too.

Enquanto as pernas de Pedro permaneciam travadas, Jonas largou a lanterna e partiu aos berros pelo mesmo caminho de onde vieram.

While Pedro's legs remained locked, Jonas dropped the flashlight and ran screaming back down the same path they came from.

Seria apenas após meio quilômetro de correria que perceberia que o amigo tinha ficado para trás.

It would only be after half a kilometer of running that he would realize that his friend had fallen behind.

Com o corpo ainda se recusando a responder, Pedro viu o imenso dragão deixar o breu da caverna e caminhar em sua direção com os dentes à mostra.

With his body still refusing to respond, Pedro saw the immense dragon leave the darkness of the cave and walk towards him with its teeth bared.

As escamas vermelhas de suas patas grossas reluziram...

The red scales of its thick legs gleamed...

As diminutas asas abriram-se e os grandes olhos amarelos fitaram um intruso, contraindo as pupilas fendidas ao mesmo tempo em que a boca se escancarava.

The tiny wings opened, and the large yellow eyes stared at an intruder, contracting the slit pupils at the same time the mouth widened.

Pedro viu o brilho das chamas brotando de dentro da goela do dragão, mas, ainda sem reação, não foi capaz de correr.

Pedro saw the glow of the flames bursting from the dragon's throat, but still without reaction, he was unable to run.

O jovem e inexperiente aventureiro curvou-se com as mãos na cabeça,

A criatura continuava fitando-o com os dentes à mostra, a apenas um passo de abocanhá-lo, mas não havia feito.

The creature continued staring at him with its teeth bared, only a step away from lunging at him, but had not done so.

Aparentemente, não pretendia fazê-lo.

Apparently, he/she did not intend to do it.

Ambos se encararam por alguns segundos, sem que nada acontecesse, até o dragão decidir quebrar o silêncio.

They stared at each other for a few seconds, with nothing happening, until the dragon decided to break the silence.

— Vai! Some logo daqui! — ordenou recolhendo suas pequenas asas junto ao corpo.

— Go! Get out of here soon! — he ordered, gathering his small wings close to his body.

— Você não estava tentando me matar? — questionou Pedro, incrédulo com as próprias palavras.

"You weren't trying to kill me?" Pedro questioned, incredulous at his own words.

— Preferia que eu estivesse? — rebateu o dragão com uma careta cínica.

— Would you prefer that I were? — the dragon retorted with a cynical grimace.

— Qual o seu problema? Vá logo embora e parem de vir aqui me atormentar!

— What's your problem? Just go away already and stop coming here to bother me!

— Desculpe!

— Sorry!

— Eu... não quis incomodar — respondeu ainda meio confuso.

— I... didn’t mean to bother — he answered, still somewhat confused.

As pernas continuavam moles demais para se levantar, mas, por algum motivo idiota,

The legs were still too weak to get up, but for some stupid reason,

ele não queria contar ao dragão que só estava sentado ali porque tinha travado de medo.

He didn't want to tell the dragon that he was only sitting there because he had frozen in fear.

— Foi mal entendido, sabe? Eu só vim até aqui porque pensei que você fosse o dragão que matou a princesa.

— It was a misunderstanding, you know? I only came here because I thought you were the dragon that killed the princess.

A fera bufou, indignada com a acusação.

The beast snorted, outraged by the accusation.

— Eu não matei a princesa! — defendeu-se com o olhar fixo sobre o rapaz.

— I didn't kill the princess! — he defended himself with his gaze fixed on the boy.

Aquele era o primeiro que não fugir apavorado, e parecia disposto a ouvir.

He was the first who did not run away in fright and seemed willing to listen.

Então, com um suspiro cansado, a criatura revelou o seu segredo.

So, with a weary sigh, the creature revealed its secret.

— Eu sou a princesa! — Pedro arregalou os olhos.

— I am the princess! — Pedro widened his eyes.

As pernas já voltavam ao normal, mas agora ele estava intrigado demais para correr.

His legs were already returning to normal, but now he was too intrigued to run.

— Espera! Como assim? Você é a princesa? — questionou Franzinho da Teste.

— Wait! What do you mean? You are the princess? — questioned Franzinho da Teste.

— Então você foi enfeitiçada? — o dragão balançou a cabeça em negativo.

— So you were enchanted? — the dragon shook its head in the negative.

— Não fui enfeitiçada. Eu sou assim mesmo. Sempre fui.

— I wasn't enchanted. I'm just like this. I've always been.

O meu pai era um dragão, e a minha mãe se apaixonou por ele.

My father was a dragon, and my mother fell in love with him.

Boque aberto, o rapaz continuou encarando a criatura, ainda mais confuso com aquela história.

Mouth agape, the boy continued to stare at the creature, even more confused by that story.

Entendendo sua desconfiança, ela explicou que seu pai possuía um amuleto que lhe permitia assumir a forma humana,

Understanding his distrust, she explained that her father possessed an amulet that allowed him to take on human form,

e assim a rainha o conhecera.

And so the queen had met him.

Porém, quando tiveram sua primeira filha, o rei a presenteara com o seu pai.

However, when they had their first daughter, the king presented her to her father.

— Eu e a minha mãe mantivemos isso em segredo durante todo esse tempo, mas...

— My mother and I have kept this a secret all this time, but...

Há três anos, meu tio Haspelad descobriu.

Three years ago, my uncle Haspelad discovered.

Então ele me levou para fora do castelo, roubou meu amuleto,

Then he took me outside the castle, stole my amulet,

depois contou para todos que eu havia sido morta por um dragão.

then he told everyone that I had been killed by a dragon.

Foi tudo um plano para o meu primer dar o trono no meu lugar.

It was all a plan for my cousin to take the throne in my place.

— Então, além de uma princesa-dragão, o reino teve também um rei-dragão?

— So, in addition to a dragon princess, the kingdom also had a dragon king?

— questionou Pedro, ainda um tanto incrédulo.

— Pedro questioned, still somewhat skeptical.

— Olha, não me leve a mal, mas eu estou achando essa história muito estranha.

Este lago é mágico.

— When I enter this lake under the moonlight, I become human again.

A luz enfraqueceu e o jovem aventureiro finalmente pôde entrar.

The light dimmed and the young adventurer was finally able to enter.

Ainda emitindo um leve brilho, a princesa encontrava-se parada exatamente no mesmo lugar onde estivera o dragão.

Trajava um delicado vestido rosado, já um tanto desgastado pelos anos vivendo ali isolada.

She wore a delicate pink dress, already somewhat worn by the years spent living there in isolation.

Mas seus cabelos loiros custavam cuidadosamente bem penteados.

But her blonde hair was carefully well-styled.

A despeito das condições em que vinha vivendo, ela continuava tão bela quanto sua vaidade lhe permitira ser naquele ambiente.

Despite the conditions she had been living in, she remained as beautiful as her vanity had allowed her to be in that environment.

— É verdade! Você é mesmo a princesa!

— It's true! You really are the princess!

— Ela sorriu, parecendo achar graças a Deus.

— She smiled, seeming to thank God.

— Mas, se você pode se transformar, por que nunca voltou ao reino?

— Eu tentei, mas a transformação se desfaz sempre que me afasto do lago.

— I tried, but the transformation wears off whenever I move away from the lake.

Quando os camponeses me viram, pensaram que eu fosse o dragão que matou a princesa, e correram para chamar os soldados.

When the peasants saw me, they thought I was the dragon that killed the princess, and ran to call the soldiers.

Eu escapei por pouco. Tenho vivido sozinha aqui desde então.

I barely escaped. I have been living alone here since then.

A minha mãe não sabe onde estou e, mesmo que soubesse, não teria como me ajudar.

My mother doesn't know where I am and, even if she did, she wouldn't be able to help me.

— O que as pessoas diriam se soubessem que a princesa do reino delas...

— What would people say if they knew that the princess of their kingdom...

Ela sorriu em resposta e aquele sorriso aqueceu o coração de Pedro.

She smiled in response, and that smile warmed Pedro's heart.

Sensibilizado com o problema da princesa e talvez levemente apaixonado por um dragão,

Moved by the princess's problem and perhaps slightly in love with a dragon,

o jovem aventureiro tomou uma decisão.

The young adventurer made a decision.

— Eu vou te ajudar!

—I will help you!

— Como?

— How?

— Vou recuperar o seu amuleto, assim você poderá voltar ao castelo e tudo vai ser como era antes.

— I will recover your amulet, so you can return to the castle and everything will be as it was before.

— Você faria isso por mim?

— Would you do this for me?

— Claro! Afinal, se quer o mesmo ser um cavaleiro, salvar a princesa seria um bom começo, não é?

— Of course! After all, if you want to be a knight, saving the princess would be a good start, wouldn't it?

Jonas ficou aliviado ao encontrar Pedro ainda vivo, mas foi difícil acreditar naquela história sobre a princesa-dragão.

Jonas was relieved to find Pedro still alive, but it was hard to believe that story about the dragon princess.

E ainda mais difícil foi entender como acabou aceitando participar de mais um plano maluco do seu amigo.

And even harder was to understand how he ended up agreeing to participate in another crazy plan of his friend.

Provavelmente, foi aquela parte sobre entrar escondido em uma festa que o convencera.

It was probably that part about sneaking into a party that convinced him.

Pedro havia acontecido uma vez que ele não sabia o que estava acontecendo.

Pedro had experienced a time when he did not know what was happening.

Havia conseguido um par de trajes semelhantes aos dos servos do castelo e, por algum milagre, os dois ainda não tinham sido descobertos.

He had managed to get a pair of outfits similar to those of the castle servants and, by some miracle, the two had not yet been discovered.

O salão estava tomado por integrantes da corte e nobres de reinos distantes.

The hall was filled with members of the court and nobles from distant kingdoms.

Um grupo de músicos animava o ambiente com uma suave melodia e as mesas encontravam-se muito bem servidas de comida.

A group of musicians was enlivening the atmosphere with a soft melody, and the tables were well stocked with food.

— Hum, eu nunca comi um desses!

— Hmm, I've never eaten one of those!

Disse Jonas com a boca cheia, revirando os olhos enquanto mastigava o décimo quinto doce da noite.

Jonas said with his mouth full, rolling his eyes while chewing the fifteenth candy of the night.

— Quer parar com isso?

— Do you want to stop that?

Pedro aproximou-se do amigo para tirar.

Pedro approached his friend to take a shot.

— Nós deveríamos estar servindo a comida, não comendo.

— We should be serving the food, not eating.

— Ah, vê se não enche.

— Ah, don't be annoying.

— Se vão me mandar para a forca por invadir o castelo, eu quero que ao menos tenha valido a pena.

— If they are going to send me to the gallows for invading the castle, I want it to have been worth it at least.

— Vai valer a pena se conseguirmos roubar aquele amuleto.

— It will be worth it if we manage to steal that amulet.

— Eu já descobri qual corredor leva aos aposentos da realeza.

Jonas suspirou.

Jonas sighed.

Ainda não tinha muita certeza se acreditava naquela história, mas aceitara participar do plano.

The decoration on the doorframe, filled with black candles and small animal skulls, sort of helped with that task.

O interior do quarto conseguia ser ainda mais assustador do que a porta.

The interior of the room was even more frightening than the door.

Havia estantes em todas as paredes, repletas de livros e pequenos frascos com conteúdos estranhos,

There were shelves on all the walls, filled with books and small jars containing strange substances,

além de uma porção de jarros de vidro, onde coisas esquisitas boiavam num líquido de cheiro forte.

besides a number of glass jars, where strange things floated in a liquid with a strong smell.

Pedro buscou tranquilizar o amigo.

Pedro sought to reassure his friend.

Dizendo que aquilo tudo estava ali apenas para espantar os intrusos.

Saying that all of that was just there to scare off intruders.

E ambos puseram-se a vasculhar as prateleiras e gavetas em busca do amuleto da princesa.

And both set about searching the shelves and drawers for the princess's amulet.

Tem que estar aqui em algum lugar, resmungou Pedro, após já terem revirado metade das gavetas.

It has to be here somewhere, grumbled Pedro, after they had already turned over half of the drawers.

Ela disse que o amuleto é pequeno, do tamanho de uma noz, no formato de um dente afiado.

She said that the amulet is small, the size of a walnut, shaped like a sharp tooth.

Amarrado em um cordão de couro preto?

Tied with a black leather cord?

Questionou Jonas.

Jonas asked.

Não sei, ela não chegou a descrever o...

I don't know, she didn't get around to describing the...

Pedro engoliu em seco.

Pedro swallowed hard.

Ao perceber que Jonas apontava em direção à porta, com o rosto pálido.

Upon noticing that Jonas was pointing towards the door, with a pale face.

Hasfield estava bem ali, parado diante da única saída, com o seu cajado de mago em uma das mãos e o amuleto na outra.

O cajado tornou-se a acender, com uma luz ainda mais forte.

Pedro e Jonas não tinham para onde correr e, desta vez,

— Não vou precisar de ajuda — disse a Princesa Dragão, sorrindo para Pedro.

"I won't need help," said the Dragon Princess, smiling at Pedro.

Do outro lado do quarto, Rassulad já se levantava, pronto para fazer outro disparo.

On the other side of the room, Rassulad was already getting up, ready to take another shot.

Vivian retirou a cabeça de dentro do recinto e ofereceu os ombros aos colegas.

Vivian pulled her head out of the enclosure and offered her shoulders to her colleagues.

— Vamos, subam!

— Come on, get in!

Pedro e Jonas saltaram pelo buraco, escapando por um triz do raio disparado pelo cajado.

Pedro and Jonas jumped through the hole, narrowly escaping the lightning bolt fired from the staff.

— Seus miseráveis! Eu vou matá-los e destruir esse monstro de uma vez por todas!

— You miserable ones! I will kill you and destroy this monster once and for all!

Ao som do alarme soando pela cidade, Vivian desceu às pressas do castelo, chegando ao chão com um estrondo.

To the sound of the alarm ringing throughout the city, Vivian hurried down from the castle, landing on the ground with a thud.

Os guardas já vinham em sua caçada, e a população furiosa também.

The guards were already on their hunt, and the furious population as well.

— De onde saíram todas essas tochas e foices?

— Where did all these torches and sickles come from?

— Hora do plano B — respondeu Pedro.

— Time for plan B — replied Pedro.

— Vamos, Princesa, precisamos sair daqui.

As pernas grossas do dragão correram desajeitadas, e a multidão furiosa seguiu em seu encalço.

Ainda sentado nos ombros de Vivian, Jonas decidiu quebrar o silêncio com uma pergunta idiota.

Still sitting on Vivian's shoulders, Jonas decided to break the silence with a stupid question.

— Nós não podemos fugir voando?

— Can't we fly away?

— Com estas asas? — rebateu em tom cínico, abrindo as asinhas desproporcionalmente pequenas e agitando-as no ar duas vezes.

— With these wings? — she retorted in a cynical tone, opening her disproportionately small wings and fluttering them in the air twice.

— Ah, certo. Então, qual era mesmo o plano B? — perguntou para Pedro.

— Oh, right. So, what was the plan B again? — she asked Pedro.

— Eu ainda estou pensando nele — respondeu o amigo, lutando para se segurar nas escamas lisas do pescoço da princesa.

— I'm still thinking about him — replied the friend, struggling to hold on to the princess's smooth neck scales.

— Nossa única esperança é chegar até o lago.

— Our only hope is to reach the lake.
