Eu sou uma mulher negra, gorda, visto manequim 48, sou completamente fora do padrão,

I am a black woman, fat, wear size 48, I am completely outside the norm.

então vocês podem imaginar o que eu já passei.

So you can imagine what I've been through.

Bom, a Desarme preparou algumas perguntas para mim e eu vou responder tudo aqui.

Então vamos para a primeira pergunta?

Agora no final de setembro, aconteceram as semanas de moda na Europa.

Embora algumas marcas já tivessem desfilado modelos curvy antes,

nessa temporada o que a gente viu foi essa representatividade crescer.

In this season, what we saw was this representation growing.

Marcas como Versace, Fendi, Itro foram algumas que trouxeram modelos fora do padrão em seu cast.

E com toda essa repercussão, algumas pessoas podem pensar

que isso é algo novo.

Mas você já é modelo há 10 anos, né?

Conta para a gente como tudo começou.

Tell us how it all began.

Sim, sou modelo há 10 anos.

Tudo começou, na verdade, quando eu estava acompanhando a minha irmã em um desfile,

It all started, actually, when I was accompanying my sister to a parade,

que foi o primeiro evento voltado para o mercado plus size,

which was the first event aimed at the plus size market,

que era o Fashion Weekend plus size.

that was the Plus Size Fashion Weekend.

E a diretora do evento me viu e falou,

And the event director saw me and said,

nossa, você vai desfilar?

Wow, are you going to parade?

Eu falei, não.

I said no.

Aí ela, nossa, eu devia ser modelo.

Then she said, wow, I should be a model.

Aí eu fiquei, gente, como assim?

So I was like, guys, what do you mean?

Eu modelo?

Am I a model?

Eu nunca tinha pensado, porque eu sempre quis ser apresentadora.

I had never thought about it because I always wanted to be a host.

Eu sempre gostei e brincava com as minhas irmãs de ser apresentadora.

I have always liked and would play with my sisters pretending to be a presenter.

E modelo nunca foi algo que eu quis,

And being a model was never something I wanted,

porque todo mundo achava que, na verdade, quem ia ser modelo ia ser minha irmã.

because everyone thought that, in fact, the one who was going to be a model was going to be my sister.

Que todo mundo falava que ela era linda e tudo mais.

That everyone said she was beautiful and all that.

E eu era meio que o patinho feio da família.

And I was kind of the ugly duckling of the family.

Então eu não me via bonita para ser modelo.

So I didn't see myself as beautiful enough to be a model.

Mas eu sabia que eu tinha um potencial ali dentro de mim.

But I knew that I had a potential within me.

E aí ela falou isso.

And then she said that.

E aí quando teve a segunda edição,

And then when the second edition took place,

eu fiz o casting e aí passei e comecei a minha carreira ali.

I did the casting and then I passed and started my career there.

Mas eu sempre conto que depois que eu comecei a desfilar naquele evento,

But I always say that after I started walking in that event,

as coisas ainda demoraram para fluir,

things still took a while to flow,

para eu começar a fazer campanhas e tudo mais.

so I can start running campaigns and everything else.

Eu acho que eu fui fazer a minha primeira campanha

I think I went to do my first campaign.

quase dois anos depois da primeira vez que eu desfilei.

almost two years after the first time I walked the runway.

Então demorou muito tempo.

So it took a long time.

Coisa que as outras meninas já faziam com mais rotatividade,

Something that the other girls already did with more frequency,

com mais frequência.

E eu demorava, assim, praticamente seis,

And I took, like, almost six,

em seis meses eu fazia um trabalho.

In six months, I was doing a job.

Então meio que minha família não acreditava que aquilo ia dar certo.

So my family kind of didn't believe that it would work out.

E até mesmo eu ficava meio na dúvida.

And even I was a bit in doubt.

Será que vai dar certo? Será que não vai?

Will it work out? Will it not?

E nesse meio tempo, eu tinha 16 para 17 anos.

And in the meantime, I was 16 to 17 years old.

E eu já tinha que trabalhar, correr atrás das minhas coisas.

And I already had to work, chase after my things.

Então eu comecei a trabalhar em shopping, trabalhei em loja.

So I started working in a mall, I worked in a store.

Já fui recepcionista de loja de carro importado.

I was already a receptionist at an imported car dealership.

Já fiz cover da Beyoncé.

I have already done a cover of Beyoncé.

Já fui...

I've been...

Trabalhei com seguro.

I worked with insurance.

Então, assim, eu sempre estava ali correndo atrás dos meus sonhos.

So, like this, I was always there chasing my dreams.

Mas, ao mesmo tempo, eu tinha que pagar minhas contas.

But at the same time, I had to pay my bills.

Então eu sempre tive que manter ali as duas coisas.

So I've always had to keep both things there.

E até em um dos episódios, assim, eu trabalhando em shopping,

And even in one of the episodes, like, me working in a mall,

as meninas que trabalhavam comigo falavam,

the girls who worked with me said,

nossa, Rita, dá para ver o quanto você sonha,

Wow, Rita, you can really see how much you dream.

porque parece que saem os balãozinhos, assim, da sua cabeça.

because it looks like the little balloons are coming out of your head.

E eu ri e falei, gente, mas eu sonho mesmo.

And I laughed and said, guys, but I really do dream.

Não sou muito sonhadora.

I'm not very dreamy.

Mas tudo isso que eu sonho...

But all of this that I dream...

O sonho eu sei que um dia eu vou realizar.

I know that one day I will achieve the dream.

Um dia vocês vão me ver na capa da Vogue,

One day you will see me on the cover of Vogue,

vocês vão me ver no São Paulo Fashion Week,

you will see me at São Paulo Fashion Week,

vocês vão me ver na televisão fazendo comercial,

you will see me on television doing commercials,

pode ter certeza.

You can be sure.

E elas riam da minha cara.

And they laughed in my face.

E eu ficava naquilo, né?

And I would stay with that, right?

Tipo, gente, as pessoas realmente não estão acreditando em mim.

Like, guys, people really don't believe me.

Mas eu...

But I...

Por mais que eu via que eu ficava meio insegura, assim,

No matter how much I saw that I was feeling a bit insecure, you know,

no sentido de, será que realmente vai dar certo?

In the sense of, will it really work out?

Será que é uma coisa que só eu acredito?

Is it something that only I believe?

Eu ficava meio...

I would feel a bit...

Porque quando você escuta muitas pessoas falarem sobre,

Because when you hear many people talking about it,

ah, não vai dar certo pra você,

Oh, it won't work out for you.

você acaba ficando meio naquilo, né?

You end up being a bit caught in that, right?

Será que não vai mesmo?

Is it really not going to happen?

E aí...

Hey there...

Mas eu sabia, assim, dentro de mim,

But I knew, like that, deep inside me,

eu falava, era só eu realmente enxergar

I used to say, it was just that I really needed to see.

que eu tinha que largar tudo e correr atrás.

that I had to leave everything behind and go after it.

Aí teve um dia que eu falei, não, gente, chega.

Then there was a day when I said, no, guys, enough.

Peguei minha bolsa, fui embora.

I grabbed my bag and left.

Falei, não volto mais aqui.

I said, I won't come back here anymore.

E nunca mais voltei.

And I never returned.

E segui a minha vida e fui atrás dos meus sonhos.

And I followed my life and went after my dreams.

Ainda bem que deu certo.

I'm glad it worked out.

Então foi aí que a sua ficha caiu

So that's when it dawned on you.

de que você precisava realmente acreditar

that you really needed to believe

na sua escolha e ter foco para seguir em frente

in your choice and having focus to move forward

Com certeza.

For sure.

Porque eu acho que depois que eu entendi

Because I think that after I understood

que aquilo realmente ia dar certo, né?

That it was really going to work out, right?

Que eu falei, não, gente, eu acho que eu tenho talento pra isso.

What I said is, no, guys, I think I have talent for this.

Só basta eu focar e realmente ser uma pessoa determinada,

I just need to focus and really be a determined person.

eu acho que pode dar certo.

I think it could work out.

Pode dar muito certo, né?

It can work out really well, right?

Porque eu via que eu era diferente das outras meninas, né?

Because I could see that I was different from the other girls, right?

E teve um momento que eu falei assim,

And there was a moment when I said like this,

porque nós, como mulheres, a gente é uma coisa meio que involuntária.

Because we, as women, it's kind of an involuntary thing.

A gente acaba se comparando muito

We end up comparing ourselves a lot.

quando algo não dá certo pra você.

when something doesn't work out for you.

Então eu via que as outras meninas trabalhavam muito e eu não.

So I saw that the other girls worked hard and I didn’t.

Então eu ficava naquilo.

So I was stuck in that.

Nossa, por que que fulana trabalha e eu não?

Wow, why does that person work and I don't?

Por que que fulana faz isso e eu não?

Why does so-and-so do that and I don't?

E eu acabava me comparando demais.

And I ended up comparing myself too much.

E acabava esquecendo de olhar pra mim.

And I ended up forgetting to look at myself.

Então quando chegou um momento que eu falei,

So when the moment came that I said,

não, eu realmente sou diferente delas,

no, I am really different from them,

mas esse é o meu diferencial,

but that is my difference,

foi aí.

it was there.

Foi ali que eu decidi, não, essa é a minha escolha, sabe?

It was there that I decided, no, this is my choice, you know?

Tipo, eu vou escolher ser eu.

Like, I'm going to choose to be me.

E a Rita vai ter sucesso por ser ela, sabe?

And Rita will be successful for being herself, you know?

Porque realmente, assim, eu fiquei durante muito tempo, assim,

Because really, like that, I stayed for a long time, like that,

acho que anos, pensando.

I think years, thinking.

Sempre olhando pras outras e não olhando pra mim.

Always looking at others and not looking at me.

E aí chegou um momento de eu pensar em realmente desistir

And then a moment came for me to really consider giving up.

justamente por me comparar demais e ver que eu não ia trabalhar.

just because I compare myself too much and see that I wasn't going to work.

E aí foi nesse momento que eu fiz um desabafo no meu Facebook

And that's when I vented on my Facebook.

e...

and...

E falei, gente, eu tô cansada, não consigo trabalhar,

And I said, guys, I'm tired, I can't work,

eu gosto muito do que eu faço,

I really like what I do,

mas eu, infelizmente, não tenho oportunidades.

but I, unfortunately, do not have opportunities.

E aí eu recebi uma enxurrada de mensagens, né,

So then I received a flood of messages, right,

de meninas falando, Rita,

about girls talking, Rita,

se você desistir, quem que vai representar a gente?

If you give up, who is going to represent us?

Em quem que a gente vai se espelhar?

Who are we going to look up to?

Você é a nossa referência.

You are our reference.

E aí eu falei assim, gente, parei e pensei,

And then I said, guys, I stopped and thought,

se elas estão falando que eu sou referência delas

if they are saying that I am their reference

e eu tô querendo desistir porque eu não tenho ninguém

and I want to give up because I have no one

que eu possa me espelhar,

that I can reflect upon,

eu também não vou ter...

I also won't have...

Eu não tenho a minha referência e se eu sair,

I don't have my reference, and if I go out,

elas também não vão ter.

they are also not going to have.

Quem que vai ser?

Who is it going to be?

Falei, aí que tá, né, foi nesse momento que eu vi,

I said, that's it, right, it was at that moment that I saw,

eu sou essa referência, tanto pra mim quanto pra elas.

I am that reference, both for myself and for them.

Então foi nesse momento que eu decidi,

So it was at that moment that I decided,

eu falei, não, eu realmente vou me entregar,

I said, no, I'm really going to give up,

eu realmente vou focar no que eu quero

I am really going to focus on what I want.

e eu quero ser a melhor nisso.

and I want to be the best at it.

Foi a escolha que eu fiz.

It was the choice I made.

Então, tudo que eu faço sempre teve muita coerência

So, everything I do has always made a lot of sense.

porque eu sempre escolhi ser referência,

because I have always chosen to be a reference,

é igual eu falo,

eu escolhi ser referência tanto pra mim quanto pra elas.

I chose to be a reference both for myself and for them.

Então eu sempre tive que ser muito coerente,

So I have always had to be very consistent,

não só porque é o óbvio você ser coerente no que você faz,

not only because it's obvious that you should be consistent in what you do,

mas porque eu realmente sentia que precisava ser daquele jeito, sabe?

But because I really felt that I needed to be that way, you know?

Então eu acho que eu tenho sucesso nas coisas que eu faço

So I think I succeed in the things I do.

justamente por tudo que eu falo, faço,

precisely for everything I say, do,

a maneira com que eu me comporto tem a ver com toda a minha trajetória,

the way I behave has to do with my entire journey,

com tudo que eu falo pras pessoas.

E eu achei incrível, porque assim,

And I found it amazing, because like this,

eu tava lá como modelo e eu não estava lá pra falar sobre o meu corpo.

I was there as a model and I wasn't there to talk about my body.

Eu tava lá pra ser uma modelo, né?

I was there to be a model, right?

Pra falar sobre sutiãs, era sutiã sem bojo.

To talk about bras, it was a braless bra.

E eu achei aquilo ali incrível,

And I found that amazing,

porque eu acho que o que a gente mais busca

because I think that what we seek the most

é ser modelo, né?

It's to be a model, right?

Sem precisar falar sobre o nosso corpo.

Without needing to talk about our body.

A gente quer apenas existir com o corpo que a gente tem.

We just want to exist with the bodies we have.

Então eu achei aquilo ali...

E ali foi meu primeiro contato, né?
