to share a bit about my educational journey.

Eu que tive uma escolaridade na comunidade,

I who had an education in the community,

e hoje estou formando em antropologia social.

And today I am graduating in social anthropology.

Desde então vai ser interessante eu retratar essa trajetória.

Since then, it will be interesting for me to portray this journey.

É um pouco densa, mas é interessante também.

Assim, eu comecei a estudar na Escola Indígena Marachal Rondon,

E sempre a mesma história, ser indígena não é fácil.

É preconceito, é racismo, é bullying.

Mas deu certo, pelo menos comigo, ali da minha turma,

But it worked out, at least with me, there from my class,

eu lembro, tenho memórias bem frescas,

I remember, I have very fresh memories,

que entre tantos indígenas também,

that among so many indigenous people as well,

que nós éramos minoria,

that we were the minority,

e a maioria dos estudantes sempre foi não indígena.

And most of the students have always been non-Indigenous.

Desde então havia esse choque, esse contraponto.

Since then there had been this shock, this counterpoint.

Mas assim, eu fui um sobrevivente e alguém que conseguiu vencer.

But still, I was a survivor and someone who managed to overcome.

Que ali, quando criança, no infantil mesmo, pré-alfabetização,

That there, when I was a child, in preschool, pre-literacy,

era mais a questão de preconceito, porque até mesmo eu mesmo não tinha preconceito.

It was more a matter of prejudice, because even I myself didn't have prejudice.

É, mas é um ponto, assim, eu começo falando, né, que hoje eu quando lembro dá vontade de rir.

Você é grandão ali no meio das criancinhas, aquilo já era meio estranho, estranhava, mas a professora é normal, né.

You are really big among the kids, that was kind of strange, it felt strange, but the teacher is normal, right?

E com o passar ali, né, do pré-alfabetização, a gente começa a sofrer, sim, o preconceito, né, indígena,

And with the passage there, you know, of pre-literacy, we start to experience, yes, prejudice, you know, indigenous.

vocês são do mato, vocês são carnívoros, vocês são isso, são aquilo, né.

you are from the wild, you are carnivorous, you are this, you are that, right.

Até mesmo algumas professoras.

A professora, né, assim, tinha um olhar crítico, um olhar racista, né,

The teacher, right, had a critical gaze, a racist gaze, right,

essa coisa de tratar diferente, né, é fosta do sistema humanista que existe dentro de uma comunidade, né,

this thing of treating differently, right, is a flaw of the humanist system that exists within a community, right,

porque na comunidade ali não tem grande nem pequeno, né, ali o respeito é o mesmo, né,

because in that community there isn't big or small, right, there the respect is the same, right,

a diferença não é a cor, não é o cabelo, nem nada, né.

The difference is not the color, not the hair, nor anything else, right?

Desde então, ali já ocorria muito, só que criança é inocente, né,

Since then, a lot was already happening there, but children are innocent, you know?

ali eu com 10 anos era bem inocente.

There I was quite innocent at 10 years old.

Aí quando chegou no fundamental, ali primeiro, até a quinta série, né,

é onde a gente conhece outros colegas, né, a maioria não indígena mesmo,

e rolava outros preconceitos, né, aquela pressão de você não conseguir comprar os materiais,

a questão de alimentação, né, que lanche.

The issue of food, right, which is snack.

Por assim dizer, né.

So to speak, right?

Ou seja, a situação econômica, né, que não era de igual para igual com os dos colegas não indígenas, né,

In other words, the economic situation, right, that was not equal to that of non-indigenous peers, right,

e aquilo tudo é pressão para o indígena.

And all that is pressure for the indigenous person.

Hoje eu posso falar, né, com todas as letras, porque eu tenho conhecimento do caso,

Today I can speak, right, clearly, because I have knowledge of the case,

o Estado, ele sempre teve a negar, né, promete na Constituição de 88, ele lá fala, né,

The State has always had to deny, right, it promises in the Constitution of '88, it says there, right,

a educação para todos.

A educação para todos, né, saúde, auxiliação, promete um monte de coisa, né, no papel, na realização, não é.

Hoje eu percebo, assim, com muito impulso que o Estado tem muita culpa, né, assim,

ah, se um indígena não consegue ter acesso à escolaridade, não consegue ter assistência,

ah, if an indigenous person cannot access education, they cannot receive assistance,

o Estado tem muita culpa nisso, né.

Renan, fala para a gente sobre a sua trajetória desde a educação infantil até a universidade.

Renan, tell us about your journey from early childhood education to university.

Ali, no ensino fundamental, né, foi onde eu conheci muitos colegas, né, vivi bons momentos também, né,

There, in elementary school, was where I met many classmates, right, I also lived good moments there, right,

assim, aprendi várias coisas, conheci os primeiros professores, né, ali,

So, I learned several things, met the first teachers, you know, there.

assim, de colegas, de, de professores, né, tratar como uma vez, né, assim, traumatizante, eu sempre falo isso nas minhas falas.

So, from colleagues, from teachers, right, treating it like once, right, like, traumatizing, I always say this in my speeches.

Eu cheguei atrasado, né, e a professora, eu cheguei atrasado, acho que era, não, na verdade, todos os dias,

I arrived late, right, and the teacher, I arrived late, I think it was, no, actually, every day,

eu chegava atrasado, né, porque eu morava longe, né, eu chegava sempre cinco, dez minutos atrasado.

I would arrive late, you know, because I lived far away, right? I would always arrive five to ten minutes late.

Aí, o porteiro, por incrível que pareça, o porteiro, é, naquela época, ele bancava o racista mesmo, né,

So, the doorman, unbelievably, the doorman, back then, he really acted like a racist, right?

tipo, toda vez que me via chegando, fechava, né, e o que eu fazia era pular o muro pra dentro, né.

So, every time they saw me coming, they would close it, right, and what I did was jump over the wall to get in, you know.

Eu era, eu sempre fui danado.

I was, I have always been naughty.

Desde então, é, eu lembro que,

Since then, yes, I remember that,

desde então, eu lembro que chegou um dia que a coordenadora, é,

since then, I remember that a day came when the coordinator, yes,

falou comigo pra mim, no outro dia, só entrar com a minha mãe.

He talked to me the other day, just to go in with my mother.

Eu disse, tá certo, tudo bem, né, todos os dias eu pulava o muro, mas era pra dentro, né, tipo, não fazia tanto sentido.

I said, alright, okay, right, every day I would jump over the wall, but it was inward, you know, like, it didn’t make much sense.

É, aí, quando chegou lá, né, falaram que isso não era certo e tals, e falaram pra minha mãe me aconselhar e tals,

Yeah, when I got there, they said that this wasn't right and stuff, and they told my mom to advise me and stuff.

eu lá, né, eu morrendo do coração, eu ali,

me there, right, me dying of a heartbreak, me there,

pré-adolescente, né, um momento, um momento turbulento na cabeça.

pre-teen, right, a moment, a turbulent moment in the head.

Mas, mas chegou um momento que a coordenadora entendeu, né, disse, não, é assim, é, é vandalismo pular pra fora, né, mas pra dentro não é bem assim, né.

But, there came a moment when the coordinator understood, right, said, no, it’s like this, it is, it’s vandalism to jump out, right, but to jump in is not quite like that, right.

Aí, daquele dia pra cá, né, minha vida meio melhorou, né, mudou, porque passaram a, pelo menos todos os dias eu entrava, né.

Since that day, my life kind of got better, right, it changed, because at least every day I would log in, right.

Ali já mudou, viu.

He has already changed, you see.

É interessante contar.

E chegou o ensino médio, né, ali foi outro momento também, outra etapa da vida, né, outra página da vida, que as coisas começam a ficar difíceis, né, e ainda na escola indígena, Marachal Rondon, né, que durante ali, durante ali os anos 2006 até 2010,

And high school came, right, that was another moment too, another stage of life, right, another page of life, where things start to get difficult, right, and still in the indigenous school, Marachal Rondon, right, that during those years from 2006 to 2010,

eles construíram escola.

They built a school.

Uma escola nova, né, na verdade hoje ela tá em bom funcionamento.

A new school, right? Actually, today it is in good functioning condition.

E no ensino médio eu tive o privilégio de, de entrar nela, né, é interessante que entro, é, escola nova, professores novos.

And in high school, I had the privilege of entering it, right? It's interesting that I started at a new school, with new teachers.

E assim, embora, né, no primeiro ano foi bem de boa, né, ali no segundo, minha escolaridade ali no ensino médio foi boa, assim, né, eu consegui absorver muita coisa.

And so, although, right, in the first year it was pretty easy, right, there in the second, my education in high school was good, like, right, I was able to absorb a lot.

Apesar da, da, das barreiras, né, que surgiram, essa questão de, de, essa questão de introdução de burocracia, né, como é o caso do comprovante de, de água, comprovante de energia, né, na comunidade indígena não se paga isso.

Despite the barriers that have arisen, this issue of introducing bureaucracy, such as the case of proof of water and proof of electricity, is not applicable in the indigenous community as these are not paid.

Desde então, é, eu lembro recentemente, frescamente na minha mente, né, que, é, eu tive essa burocracia, acho que eu fiquei, acho que um ano sem...

Since then, yes, I remember recently, vividly in my mind, right, that, uh, I had this bureaucracy, I think I stayed, I think a year without...

Sem poder estudar, porque não, não, não tinha comprovante de, de residência, muito menos de água, nem de energia, de nada, né, tipo indígena.

Without being able to study, because no, no, no, I didn't have proof of residence, much less of water, or electricity, nothing, you know, like an indigenous person.

Eu sei que com o passar do tempo, né, no, no ano seguinte, é, eu voltei, fiz o, o primeiro ano do ensino médio, depois o segundo, terceiro, é, e consegui terminar, né, o ensino médio.

I know that over time, right, in the following year, yeah, I went back, did the first year of high school, then the second, third, and I managed to finish, right, high school.

Terminei em 2013, ali, eu lembro.

I finished in 2013, there, I remember.

E, logo, logo, né...

And soon enough, right...

Logo, logo, eu terminei em 2013, aí, passei, acho que um ano, parado.

Soon after, I finished in 2013, then I spent, I think, a year doing nothing.

Aí, teve um certo dia que minha irmã, né, minha meia-irmã, que meu pai, meu pai não era indígena, né, minha mãe é da comunidade base, ali, é, é uma índia que, que nunca saiu da comunidade e nem pretende sair, né, ela vive em um, em um mundo limitado, mas, que feliz, né, uma guerreira.

So, there was a certain day when my sister, right, my half-sister, who my father, my father wasn't indigenous, right, my mother is from the base community, there, she is an Indian who has never left the community and doesn't intend to leave, right, she lives in a limited world, but, happy, right, a warrior.

Meu pai, não, meu pai não era indígena, né.

My father, no, my father was not indigenous, right?

Ele tinha uma outra família em Minas Gerais, em Santa Cruz de Minas, e, e lá, ele tinha uma outra família, assim, mais velha, né, o pessoal mais velho, os irmãos mais velhos.

He had another family in Minas Gerais, in Santa Cruz de Minas, and there, he had another family, you know, older, right, with older people, older siblings.

Aí, teve um dia que a minha irmã, a Vivi, ela ligou pra mim, né, naquele tempo, ali, 2014, não era, todo mundo tinha celular, né, a gente só se falava às vezes, no crédito, né, e acabou que, essa vez mesmo que ela ligou, ela disse, ah, Renan, vem estudar aqui.

There was a day when my sister, Vivi, called me, right? At that time, in 2014, not everyone had a cell phone, right? We only talked sometimes, when we had credit, you know? And that time she called, she said, "Oh, Renan, come study here."

Aqui tem a Universidade Federal, e, dá bom, vem pra cá.

Here is the Federal University, and it’s good, come here.

Aí, passou alguns dias, né, eu conversei com a minha mãe, porque minha mãe é sensível, né, ali, é, nunca saiu ali da, da comunidade, ela não sabe como é o mundo, e, pra ela, é, é indígena de base, é aquilo, né, nem sabe, nem quer saber, a preocupação, quanto menos, melhor.

So, a few days passed, right, I talked to my mother, because my mother is sensitive, right, she has never left the community, she doesn't know what the world is like, and for her, it's indigenous at the core, that's it, right, she doesn't even know, nor does she want to know, the concern, the less she knows, the better.

E, eu conversei com ela, né, ela não entendeu o que eu queria da vida, mas, ela disse, vá, né.

And, I talked to her, right, she didn't understand what I wanted from life, but, she said, go on, right.

Aí, eu fui, né, tava aberta a inscrição pra, pro vestibular da UFMG, né, eu entrei como não indígena, interessante, né, eu fiz o vestibular, é, não concorrendo a vagas como indígena, aí, eu entrei, é, no curso de física, né, é, concorrendo, acho que tinha seis vagas, aí, a, a primeira ficou pra mim, né, ali, eu fiquei, fiquei flutuando de alegria naquele momento.

So, I went, right, the registration for the UFMG entrance exam was open, right, I entered as a non-indigenous person, interesting, right, I took the entrance exam, not competing for spots as an indigenous person, then I got into the physics course, right, competing, I think there were six spots, then, the first one was for me, right, I was floating with joy at that moment.

Aí, eu entrei na UFMG, ali, em 2015, e, eu sempre gostei de ciências exatas, né, e, ali, eu fui me aperfeiçoando, né, no primeiro ano, é interessante, eu fui reprovado, é, a gente começa com quatro disciplinas obrigatórias, eu fui reprovado em três, voltei pra casa, passei um bom tempo,

Then, I entered UFMG in 2015, and I have always liked exact sciences, right, and there, I was improving myself, right, in the first year, it's interesting, I failed, yeah, we start with four mandatory subjects, I failed three, went back home, spent quite a bit of time,

passei um bom tempo sem estudar, aí, um certo dia, um, uns antropólogos chegaram, né, chegaram e, e interrogando o pessoal da comunidade e tals, né, e eu achei aquilo muito interessante, eu disse, uau, isso é, isso é magnífico, né, saber de como funciona a cultura, a política, a justiça, né, o poder, né, eu disse, ah, eu, naquele momento, eu gostei da antropologia.

I spent a good while without studying, then, one day, some anthropologists arrived, you know, they arrived and started questioning the people in the community and such, right, and I found that very interesting, I said, wow, this is, this is magnificent, you know, to understand how culture, politics, justice works, you know, power, right, I said, ah, at that moment, I liked anthropology.

É assim que eu soube que, que a Universidade de Brasília tava, não, na verdade, foi um antropóloga aqui da Universidade de Brasília que me falou que aqui, é, tinha, tinha graduação pra antropologia e que indígena concorria a cotas, tinha direito a cotas e, e bolsa de estudo mesmo, né.

That's how I found out that the University of Brasília had, no, actually, it was an anthropologist here from the University of Brasília who told me that here, there was a degree in anthropology and that Indigenous people competed for quotas, had the right to quotas and, and scholarships, right?

Eu passei a sonhar, né, sabe, agora eu quero ser antropólogo.

I started to dream, you know, now I want to be an anthropologist.

So, back in 2015, I started to look for opportunities, right? I went back to Minas Gerais, to my sister Vívia's house, and from there I took the entrance exam, right? Because the University of Brasília has an indigenous entrance exam, which is conducted through centers, right? They distribute centers in cities with a higher number of indigenous people, right?

ele faz uma pesquisa, pega ali do IBGE e, e realiza o, o vestibular indígena.

He conducts a survey, takes data from the IBGE, and carries out the indigenous entrance exam.

Desde então, eu fiz o vestibular pra Universidade de Brasília, aí passei também, passei na primeira chamada.

Aí, logo eu vim também, né, tipo, as condições financeiras naquele momento, é, eu não tava tão bem, né, porque o tempo que eu fiquei parado, eu fiquei trabalhando clandestinamente, né, ganhando pouco.
