Em 2017, quando me tornei professora do curso de jornalismo da UFSC, eu sempre tive interesse pelas questões étnicas.

In 2017, when I became a professor of the journalism course at UFSC, I have always been interested in ethnic issues.

Porém, esse interesse já vem de muito mais tempo, não começa aí no meu trabalho na universidade.

However, this interest has been around for much longer; it does not start with my work at the university.

Por ser uma mulher negra, eu já me deparei, já desde a infância, com o racismo e com outras situações,

As a Black woman, I have encountered racism and other situations since childhood.

da questão étnica racial ao longo da minha vida.

Essas questões me acompanharam também durante os estudos na universidade, seja na graduação, seja na pós-graduação.

These issues also accompanied me during my studies at university, both in undergraduate and graduate programs.

E esse é meu envolvimento, que continua com as questões étnicas, em união com as questões comunicacionais e do jornalismo.

And this is my involvement, which continues with ethnic issues, in conjunction with communication and journalism issues.

Por isso a gente está aqui, usando esse espaço, um podcast, para debater esses temas.

Conta um pouco para a gente do seu envolvimento com as questões étnicas e da negritude.

Tell us a bit about your involvement with ethnic issues and Blackness.

Bom, como eu mencionei no início do episódio, eu sou uma mulher negra de pele clara.

Well, as I mentioned at the beginning of the episode, I am a light-skinned Black woman.

Então, a minha identidade racial foi uma construção que vem de um longo processo em que algumas coisas sempre aconteceram,

So, my racial identity has been a construction that comes from a long process in which some things have always happened,

mas nem sempre eu enxergava por que elas estavam acontecendo.

but I didn't always see why they were happening.

Nem sempre a gente classifica essas coisas.

We don't always classify these things.

Nem sempre a gente classifica essas coisas como racismo.

We don't always classify these things as racism.

Só depois de um tempo que a gente se distancia e pode perceber qual é a motivação de certas coisas que acontecem, né?

Only after some time that we distance ourselves can we realize what the motivation behind certain things that happen is, right?

Então, vem sendo um trabalho aí de perceber essas questões e me perceber como uma mulher negra.

So, it has been a process of recognizing these issues and recognizing myself as a Black woman.

E você, Ieda, quando descobriu na sua vida essas questões raciais?

And you, Ieda, when did you discover these racial issues in your life?

Na verdade, assim, a minha construção racial e o meu entendimento enquanto mulher,

In fact, thus, my racial construction and my understanding as a woman,

como uma mulher negra, começou na universidade.

As a Black woman, she started at university.

Lá na minha infância, principalmente na minha adolescência, eu tive várias experiências de racismo.

Back in my childhood, especially in my adolescence, I had several experiences of racism.

Eu sentia a violência e eu sentia o desconforto por parte de colegas de escola, enfim, pessoas do meu círculo ali de convivência.

I felt the violence and I felt the discomfort from schoolmates, in short, people in my circle of acquaintances.

Mas eu não sabia muito bem o que era.

But I didn't really know what it was.

Assim como a Ida se comentou, passava como uma brincadeira muitas vezes, passava como...

Just like Ida mentioned, it often came across as a joke, it came across as...

Passava como uma brincadeira muitas vezes, passava como...

It often passed as a joke, it passed as...

Não teve intenção de machucar, foi sem querer.

He didn't mean to hurt, it was unintentional.

E eu lembro de um episódio que me marcou muito, que acho que foi quando eu comecei a refletir

And I remember an episode that marked me a lot, which I think was when I started to reflect.

que poderia ter alguma coisa acontecendo comigo, que acho que foi ali nos meus 15 anos,

that something could have been happening to me, which I think was around my 15 years old,

que uma das minhas colegas da escola perguntou pra mim,

that one of my schoolmates asked me,

como será que é beijar uma pessoa negra?

What is it like to kiss a black person?

E eu me lembro de não ter entendido muito bem a pergunta, ela era uma mulher branca, né?

And I remember not really understanding the question, she was a white woman, right?

Uma menina branca.

A white girl.

Uma menina branca na época.

A white girl at the time.

E aí ela comentou sobre o tamanho do lábio, né?

And then she commented on the size of the lip, right?

E como isso poderia ser desconfortável.

And how that could be uncomfortable.

E eu lembro o quanto eu senti aquilo como um soco no estômago, assim.

And I remember how much I felt that like a punch in the stomach, like that.

Foi um episódio que me marcou, apesar de eu não ter ainda conseguido identificar,

It was an episode that marked me, even though I still haven't been able to identify it.

ter falado a palavra, foi racismo.

Having spoken the word, it was racism.

E quando eu cheguei na universidade, eu tive o prazer de conhecer outras pessoas negras,

And when I arrived at university, I had the pleasure of meeting other Black people,

apesar de poucas ainda, né?

although still few, right?

Dentro do ambiente acadêmico.

Within the academic environment.

Mas eram outras pessoas.

But they were other people.

Pessoas que compartilhavam histórias, que compartilhavam situações de racismo.

People who shared stories, who shared experiences of racism.

E aí eu comecei a fazer uma trajetória do meu passado até o momento presente,

And then I started to trace a journey from my past to the present moment,

pra eu conseguir identificar essas questões raciais.

for me to be able to identify these racial issues.

E aí eu entendi o quanto era importante participar dessa luta,

And then I understood how important it was to participate in this struggle,

não só pelos nossos direitos básicos, né?

Not just for our basic rights, right?

De respeito, de sobrevivência, de não violência contra o nosso corpo,

Of respect, of survival, of non-violence against our body,

como a gente tem presenciado muitos casos,

as we have witnessed many cases,

mas também de conseguir, além disso, de reformular a minha autoestima,

but also to be able, furthermore, to reshape my self-esteem,

reformular o que eu entendia sobre as minhas capacidades,

reformulate what I understood about my abilities,

que é algo que, querendo ou não, pessoas negras se questionam muito mais.

which is something that, whether they want to or not, black people question much more.

E aí, durante a universidade, eu consegui ter acesso a textos,

And then, during university, I was able to access texts,

consegui ter acesso à professora Leslie,

I was able to access Professor Leslie,

que foi a primeira professora negra que eu tive durante toda a minha vida.

that was the first black teacher I had throughout my entire life.

E, a partir disso, eu consegui entender que existia um caminho,

And, from that, I was able to understand that there was a way,

que era necessário ser traçado ao longo da vida,

that it was necessary to be traced throughout life,

que é sempre entender que as questões raciais não vão estar distantes,

it is always to understand that racial issues will not be distant,

mesmo que a gente não fale sobre isso, como a própria Leslie falou uma vez,

even if we don't talk about it, as Leslie herself once said,

não tem como a gente se desfazer dessa pele, desse corpo que a gente veio ao mundo.

There is no way for us to get rid of this skin, this body that we were born into.

E ele representa muito.

And he represents a lot.

É, com certeza é um caminho, né?

Yes, it is definitely a path, isn't it?

É um caminho que todos nós, e principalmente nós mulheres,

It is a path that all of us, and especially us women,

a gente vai construindo junto, porque eu sempre falo, né?

We build together, because I always say that, right?

Temos várias molduras, e a gente tem essa moldura de ser uma pessoa negra e ser mulher, né?

We have several frames, and we have this frame of being a black woman, right?

São duas questões que pesam muito na nossa sociedade.

There are two issues that weigh heavily on our society.

Infelizmente, nem sempre são tratadas, né?

Unfortunately, they are not always treated, are they?

E têm a mesma oportunidade, as mesmas oportunidades.

And they have the same opportunity, the same opportunities.

Então, é um caminho longo que ainda a gente tem que percorrer,

So, it's a long way we still have to go.

e assim, em grupo, e eu acho que refletindo em conjunto,

and so, in a group, and I think reflecting together,

essa caminhada fica melhor.

this walk gets better.

A gente vai aprendendo uns com os outros, com a nossa experiência coletiva.

We learn from each other, with our collective experience.

E se estamos aqui hoje, se tivemos oportunidade de acessar a universidade,

And if we are here today, if we had the opportunity to access the university,

é porque tem um caminho mais longo trilhado pelos nossos ancestrais,

it's because there is a longer path paved by our ancestors,

e não só os ancestrais primeiros, que são a nossa família,

and not only the first ancestors, who are our family,

mas outros longínquos que já fizeram essa luta por muito mais tempo.

but others from afar who have been fighting this struggle for much longer.

Desde que aqui chegaram no solo brasileiro,

Since they arrived here on Brazilian soil,

trazidos, né?

brought, right?

Sob toda a violência que a gente já conhece da história

Under all the violence that we already know from history.

e que muitas vezes se repete como a gente tem visto agora

and that often repeats itself as we have seen now

essa violência ser televisionada, né? Mostrada no mundo inteiro.

this violence being televised, right? Shown all over the world.

Então, nada mais urgente do que continuar debatendo essas questões.

So, nothing is more urgent than continuing to discuss these issues.

Sempre, né? Não só no dia 20 de novembro, mas sempre.

Always, right? Not just on November 20th, but always.

Sobre essa questão que a gente está falando, né?

About this issue that we are discussing, right?

De questões étnicas, isso tem muita relação

Regarding ethnic issues, this has a lot to do with it.

com o nosso podcast, não só porque é um dos principais temas

with our podcast, not only because it is one of the main themes

que a gente vai tratar aqui, mas também tem relação com a escolha,

that we will address here, but it also relates to the choice,

com a ideia do nome dessa série.

with the idea of the name of this series.

E aí, eu convido a Ira pra falar um pouquinho pra gente,

So, I invite Ira to say a little bit to us,

porque ela que teve a primeira inspiração sobre o nome.

because she was the one who had the first inspiration about the name.

Conta pra gente, Ira, de onde veio essa ideia.

Tell us, Ira, where did this idea come from?

O nome Traços nasceu da principal questão,

The name Traços was born from the main question,

o que une as pessoas negras, né?

What brings black people together, right?

Porque a gente tem pessoas negras de vários tons de pele.

Because we have Black people of various skin tones.

Então, o que a gente tem em comum?

So, what do we have in common?

Aí veio a ideia do traços, né?

Then the idea of the traits came, right?

Porque os traços negros são coisas que não se apagam,

Because the black marks are things that cannot be erased,

como a professora Leslie citou, né?

As Professor Leslie mentioned, right?

A gente não pode simplesmente tirar os nossos traços

We can't just erase our traits.

e apagar a nossa pele.

and erase our skin.

Então, veio dessa questão da união mesmo.

So, it came from that issue of unity.

A gente usou isso também na nossa identidade visual, né?

We used this in our visual identity too, right?

Que é uma silhueta com as veias, no caso, né?

What is a silhouette with the veins, in this case, right?

Formando traços que seriam sangue.

Forming traces that would be blood.

Toda essa questão da união, né?

All this issue of union, right?

Do que une a gente, da nossa ancestralidade.

Of what unites us, of our ancestry.

Mas uma coisa que é legal reforçar pros nossos ouvintes

But one thing that is nice to reinforce to our listeners

sobre essa ideia de arrancar a nossa pele, né?

about this idea of tearing off our skin, right?

Apagar esses traços.

Erase those traces.

É que depois que a gente começa a ter esse processo de consciência

It's just that after we start to have this process of consciousness.

sobre o que é a negritude,

what is negritude about,

sobre o que é o povo preto,

about what the black people are,

a gente percebe que a última coisa que a gente gostaria de fazer

we realize that the last thing we would like to do

é apagar isso, né?

It's to delete this, right?

A gente começa a entender que,

We start to understand that,

mesmo com muita luta e mesmo que tenha muito sofrimento,

even with a lot of struggle and even if there is a lot of suffering,

também tem muita beleza,

it also has a lot of beauty,

tem muita resistência, tem muita cultura.

There is a lot of resistance, there is a lot of culture.

Esses traços que a gente herda,

These traits that we inherit,

na verdade, eles são motivos de orgulho.

In fact, they are a source of pride.

Sobre isso que a Ieda falou, né?

About what Ieda talked about, right?

Da gente não querer apagar os nossos traços.

Of us not wanting to erase our marks.

É interessante porque, quando eu era criança,

It's interesting because, when I was a child,

eu tinha muita vergonha da minha boca também, né?

I was also very ashamed of my mouth, right?

Porque a gente sabe, nossa boca é mais volumosa.

Because we know, our mouth is more voluminous.

E eu lembro que numa sala em que a maioria era branca,

And I remember that in a room where the majority was white,

o pessoal falava,

they used to say,

ah, sua boca parece aquilo, parece não sei o quê,

Ah, your mouth looks like that, it looks like I don’t know what.

você parece tal animal, não sei o quê.

You look like such an animal, I don’t know what.

E tinha aquela questão também que a gente conhece, né?

And there was that issue we know about as well, right?

De dizer qual cabelo que é bom, qual cabelo que não é bom.

To say which hair is good, which hair is not good.

Qual cabelo que é bom, qual cabelo que é ruim.

Which hair is good, which hair is bad.

Durante muito tempo, eu quis alisar o meu cabelo.

For a long time, I wanted to straighten my hair.

Felizmente, eu nunca fiz isso de forma mais permanente.

Fortunately, I never did that in a more permanent way.

Eu tinha muita vergonha da minha boca.

I was very ashamed of my mouth.

Durante algum tempo, eu comecei a falar

For a while, I started to speak.

com a mão na frente da boca, para esconder.

with the hand in front of the mouth, to hide.

Porque eu não queria que as pessoas ficassem olhando.

Because I didn't want people to be staring.

Mas, hoje em dia, sabe?

But, nowadays, you know?

É parte de mim, é parte da minha beleza,

It is part of me, it is part of my beauty,

é parte de quem eu sou.

It's part of who I am.

Então, eu não mudaria isso.

So, I wouldn't change that.

Ao longo do que os movimentos negros têm construído,

Throughout what black movements have built,

ao longo desses últimos anos,

over the past few years,

a gente tem visto muitas pessoas assumindo esse corpo, né?

We've seen many people embracing this body, right?

Então, a gente tem visto o movimento de transição capilar,

So, we have seen the hair transition movement,

que é claro, né?

which is obvious, right?

Ainda está numa base mais individual,

It is still at a more individual level,

da pessoa com ela mesma,

of the person with herself,

mas a gente viu esse movimento se transformando em algo coletivo,

but we saw this movement transforming into something collective,

surgindo grupos pelas redes sociais,

emerging groups through social networks,

surgindo grupos de discussão, de encontros, né?

emerging discussion groups, meetups, right?

Como tenho visto em algumas cidades,

As I have seen in some cities,

de mulheres de cabelo crespo se encontrando para falar sobre isso.

of women with curly hair getting together to talk about it.

Então, eu percebo que, é claro, muita gente teve uma infância,

So, I realize that, of course, many people had a childhood,

e talvez ainda tenha, né?

And maybe it still does, right?

Muitas crianças ainda tenham essa infância

Many children still have this childhood.

marcada por episódios de racismo.

marked by episodes of racism.

Mas a gente também tem visto um novo movimento

But we have also seen a new movement.

para tentar não só reverter essa violência

to try not only to reverse this violence

que a gente foi sofrendo ao longo dos anos,

that we have been suffering over the years,

mas tentar mostrar o quente positivo no nosso próprio corpo,

but trying to show the positive warmth in our own body,

acho que o cabelo foi isso, a boca tem sido isso, né?

I think the hair has been like that, the mouth has been like that, right?

O nariz, que é algo muito marcante ainda,

The nose, which is still something very striking,

acho que talvez futuramente a gente possa comentar um pouco mais

I think that maybe in the future we can comment a little more.

sobre as questões das cirurgias plásticas, né?

about the issues of plastic surgeries, right?

Para afinar o nariz,

To refine the nose,

o que isso tem em relação com essa estrutura racista, né?

What does that have to do with this racist structure, right?

Mas a gente também está vendo um movimento muito positivo,

But we are also seeing a very positive movement,

exatamente pelo reforço positivo do nosso próprio corpo

exactly because of the positive reinforcement from our own body

e do que a negritude significa

and what blackness means

e do orgulho que a gente deve ter de ter nascido nesse espaço,

and the pride we should have for being born in this space,

nesse corpo, nesses traços.

in this body, in these features.

Com certeza, eu diria que é um caminho sem volta, né?

Certainly, I would say it's a point of no return, right?

É um caminho de evolução e de autoestima

It is a path of evolution and self-esteem.

e de entender, se entender no mundo.

and to understand, to understand oneself in the world.

Então, se a gente não conhece as próprias raízes,

So, if we don't know our own roots,

não conhece, não sabe de onde veio

doesn't know, doesn't know where it came from

e o que representa essa pele, esse cabelo, esses traços,

and what do this skin, this hair, these features represent,

a gente perde boa parte da nossa identidade.

we lose a big part of our identity.

E o país, do mesmo jeito.

And the country, the same way.

Aqui nós estamos falando de pessoas,

Here we are talking about people,

mas quando a gente pensa no país,

but when we think about the country,

enquanto esse país ou todos os países

while this country or all countries

que têm uma população negra expressiva,

that have a significant Black population,

e no caso o Brasil é o segundo país negro do mundo,

and in this case Brazil is the second black country in the world,

perdendo em quantidade absoluta de números

losing in absolute numbers quantity

de pessoas negras apenas para a Nigéria,

of black people only to Nigeria,

enquanto esse país não reconhecer a contribuição

while this country does not recognize the contribution

e que a negritude e que toda a história afro-brasileira,

and that blackness and all of Afro-Brazilian history,

quanto faz parte dessa cultura e constrói esse país,

how much is part of this culture and builds this country,

é uma parte importante desse país,

it is an important part of this country,

e diria fundamental,

and I would say fundamental,

esse país não será pleno,

this country will not be complete,

não terá a sua história verdadeira, integral, mostrada,

it will not have its true, complete story shown,

não reconhecerá a sua própria identidade.

will not recognize its own identity.

E isso tem acontecido de maneira maior,

And this has been happening to a greater extent,

mais expressiva nas pessoas.

Tudo resultado de lutas de anos e anos

All the result of years and years of struggles.

dos movimentos sociais negros nesse país,

que aos poucos estão conseguindo acessar os espaços,

e fazer a mudança dessa pirâmide,

and make the change of this pyramid,

que os negros não fiquem só nessa base

that black people do not remain solely on this basis

e que possam ter a sua identidade,

enfim, a sua beleza,

e é isso que a gente tem que batalhar,
