So, I am indigenous from the Nipapucanidé people, which is located...

...no estado do Ceará, no município de Iaquiraz.

...in the state of Ceará, in the municipality of Icarai.

A minha etnia foi a primeira aldeia a ter uma cacique mulher.

My ethnicity was the first village to have a female chief.

E isso é motivo de muito orgulho.

And that is a source of great pride.

A cacique pequena, que é a minha avó, abriu as portas para que outras mulheres indígenas pudessem exercer diferentes funções dentro da comunidade e fora da comunidade também.

The small cacique, who is my grandmother, opened the doors for other indigenous women to take on various roles both within the community and outside of it.

Então, geralmente, ela conta que a mulher não nasceu para viver debaixo do pé de fogão.

So, usually, she says that a woman was not born to live under the kitchen stove.

E sim, a mulher nasceu para estar hipertensiva.

And yes, the woman was born to be hypertensive.

Ela nasceu para viver em diferentes espaços.

She was born to live in different spaces.

E isso é um motivo de muito orgulho para mim e para o meu povo.

And this is a source of great pride for me and for my people.

Atualmente, eu sou estudante de biologia e foi graças a ela que estou aqui, ocupando esse espaço, o espaço da universidade.

Currently, I am a biology student, and it is thanks to it that I am here, occupying this space, the space of the university.

Um espaço muito difícil de permanecer, mas que eu estou permanecendo e resistindo enquanto um povo indígena, né?

A very difficult space to remain in, but I am staying and resisting as an indigenous people, right?

Yuri, como você disse anteriormente, você pertence à etnia de Nipapucanidé, que é uma etnia descendente do povo Paiá.

Yuri, as you mentioned earlier, you belong to the Nipapucanidé ethnicity, which is an ethnicity descended from the Paiá people.

Can you then tell us how this process of your identification went?

E também, se você puder falar um pouco sobre o conflito que se iniciou na década de 80 com a empresa ipioca

para a exploração da terra, né? Para o plantio de cana-de-açúcar.

E também a utilização da água da Lagoa Encantada para a irrigação da monocultura.

O povo de Nipapucanidé, ele é descendente, né? A gente descende de quatro povos, que é Paiacu, Cabeludos, Genipapo e Canidé.

The people of Nipapucanidé, they are descendants, right? We descend from four peoples, which are Paiacu, Cabeludos, Genipapo, and Canidé.

Atualmente, somos conhecidos como Genipapo-Canidé.

Currently, we are known as Genipapo-Canidé.

Genipapo, que é o fruto que a gente retira, né? Para poder nos pintar, que é a tinta preta que a gente utiliza para fazer a tinta de Nipapo.

Genipapo, which is the fruit that we extract, right? To be able to dye us, which is the black dye that we use to make Nipapo dye.

E Canidé, porque o nosso povo, ele sempre foi muito devoto de São Francisco.

And Canidé, because our people have always been very devoted to St. Francis.

E aí, sempre, nos finais de ano, o nosso povo via para São Francisco, que é lá em Canidé.

And then, always, at the end of the year, our people would go to São Francisco, which is in Canidé.

E aí, quando foi para o nome da nossa aldeia, ficou Genipapo-Canidé, né?

So, when it was decided on the name of our village, it became Genipapo-Canidé, right?

Mas, antigamente, a gente era conhecido como Cabeludos. Cabeludos da Encantada.

But, back in the day, we were known as the Hairy Ones. Hairy Ones from Encantada.

E aí, a nossa luta, que é a luta do povo de Genipapo-Canidé, ela começou na década de 80.

And then, our struggle, which is the struggle of the people of Genipapo-Canidé, began in the 1980s.

Quando alguns estudantes universitários, eles vieram fazer um estudo na nossa aldeia.

When some university students came to do a study in our village.

A luta do nosso povo, ela teve início juntamente com outros indígenas do estado do Ceará, como Tapeba, Pitaguari e Temimbé.

The struggle of our people began alongside other indigenous groups in the state of Ceará, such as Tapeba, Pitaguari, and Temimbé.

Que juntos, eles, nós, né? Lutamos pelos eixos principais do movimento indígena, que é terra, saúde e educação.

That together, they, us, right? We fight for the main axes of the indigenous movement, which are land, health, and education.

No início, não foi nada fácil, porque a avó conta que ela sofreu muito preconceito para ser cacique do nosso povo.

In the beginning, it wasn't easy at all because the grandmother says that she suffered a lot of prejudice for being the chief of our people.

Ela era uma mulher e isso já não era visto com bons olhos, né? Para eles, para os homens indígenas.

She was a woman, and that was no longer looked upon favorably, right? For them, for the indigenous men.

E ela sempre fala que ela precisou passar por um teste para poder conseguir ser cacique do nosso povo.

And she always says that she needed to go through a test in order to become the chief of our people.

Então, para ser cacique do nosso povo, ela teve que beber um líquido verde.

So, to become the chief of our people, she had to drink a green liquid.

E eles falaram que se ela ficasse em pé, ela seria cacique.

And they said that if she stood up, she would be a chief.

E aí, foi então que ela bebeu e não caiu, né?

So, that’s when she drank and didn’t fall, right?

E a partir dali, ela foi aceita como cacique pelos homens, né? Pelos pajés.

And from there, she was accepted as a chief by the men, right? By the shamans.

E aí, ela foi aceita como a primeira mulher a exercer o cargo de cacique no Brasil e na América Latina.

So, she was accepted as the first woman to hold the position of chief in Brazil and Latin America.

E foi ela, a cacique pequena, né? Minha avó, que ela conseguiu todos esses direitos para o nosso povo, como escola, educação e saúde.

And it was her, the little chief, right? My grandmother, who secured all these rights for our people, like school, education, and health.

Por muitas vezes, ela teve que deixar seus filhos em casa para cuidar do povo, mas foi por uma boa casa, né?

Many times, she had to leave her children at home to take care of the people, but it was for a good cause, right?

E aí, hoje em dia, na aldeia, a gente tem tudo.

So, these days, in the village, we have everything.

E além disso, a gente tem o CRAS indígena, né?

And besides that, we have the indigenous CRAS, right?

E outra conquista da cacique pequena, que ela queria muito, que era além da escola, era professores indígenas.

And another achievement of Chief Pequena, which she wanted very much, was to have indigenous teachers, in addition to the school.

Então, ela correu atrás da formação de professores, que foi onde eles passaram pelo magistério.

So, she pursued teacher training, which was where they went through teaching.

E lá, eles fizeram essa formação e a nossa escola, ela tem uma composição no entorno de 14 professores indígenas.

And there, they provided this training, and our school has a composition of around 14 indigenous teachers.

Que, junto, eles ensinam a educação tanto básica quanto a educação indígena, né?

That together, they teach both basic education and indigenous education, right?

Como a forma como a gente vive, nossas plantas medicinais, nosso toré, nossa cultura.

Like the way we live, our medicinal plants, our toré, our culture.

Logo no início da nossa luta, o nosso povo, ele deu de cara a um grande conflito, que foi com a empresa Ipioca, né?

Right at the beginning of our struggle, our people faced a major conflict with the Ipioca company, didn't they?

Que é a atual fábrica de papelão.

What is the current cardboard factory?

Porque ela retirava água da nossa lagoa pra regar a cana-de-açúcar, né? O canavial.

Because she was taking water from our pond to irrigate the sugarcane, right? The sugarcane field.

Mas, esse não era o grande problema, né? Não era o único problema que a gente tinha.

But that wasn't the main problem, was it? It wasn't the only problem we had.

Eles, além de retirar água da lagoa, eles jogavam os dejetos da cana-de-açúcar na nossa lagoa.

They not only removed water from the pond, but they also dumped sugarcane waste into our pond.

E esses dejetos, a gente conhece como vinhoto.

And these waste products, we know as vinasse.

E aí, quando foi em 2010, a gente teve uma mortalidade muito grande de peixe, muito grande mesmo.

And then, when it was in 2010, we had a very large mortality of fish, really very large.

Eu era criança na época.

I was a child at the time.

E eu lembro que foi muito triste ver todos aqueles peixes mortos.

And I remember it was very sad to see all those dead fish.

E era tanto peixe que não dava pra salvar, né?

And there were so many fish that it wasn't possible to save them, right?

E aí, nossa lagoa, ela ficou com tanta matéria orgânica acumulada que não tinha, não tinha como esses peixes respirarem.

So, our lagoon accumulated so much organic matter that there was no way these fish could breathe.

Até hoje, atualmente, né? O nosso povo, ele carrega na história esse momento que a gente teve.

Until today, currently, right? Our people carry in their history this moment that we had.

Porque nossa lagoa, ela ainda continua com muita matéria orgânica, né?

Because our lagoon still has a lot of organic matter, right?

Propiciando o que? Propicia o crescimento acelerado de plantas aquáticas.

Providing what? It facilitates the accelerated growth of aquatic plants.

E outro ponto, também, é que muitos tiveram que ir atrás de outro meio de sobrevivência, né?

And another point is that many had to seek another means of survival, right?

De subsistência.

Of subsistence.

Porque pescar deixou de ser uma prática.

Because fishing stopped being a practice.

Porque a gente passou por muito tempo sem peixe.

Because we went a long time without fish.

Mas, atualmente, tudo está voltando ao normal, né?

But, currently, everything is going back to normal, right?

Nossa lagoa está voltando ao normal. É uma lagoa muito linda e encantada.

Our lagoon is returning to normal. It's a very beautiful and enchanted lagoon.

E própria para o banho, né?

It's suitable for bathing, right?

É, analisando algumas bibliografias, eu busquei sobre contos e mitos

Yes, analyzing some bibliographies, I researched about tales and myths.

para poder conhecer um pouco mais sobre a cultura do genipapo canidé.

to be able to learn a little more about the culture of the Genipapo Canidé.

Só que eu acabei ignorando um detalhe que estava na ponta do meu nariz.

I just ended up ignoring a detail that was right under my nose.

E quando eu percebi, despertou-me muita curiosidade.

And when I realized, it sparked a lot of curiosity in me.

Eu queria entender um pouco do porquê o nome Lagoa Encantada.

I wanted to understand a bit of why the name Enchanted Lagoon.

Queria saber também como vocês trabalham para fortalecer suas tradições, costumes e histórias.

I would also like to know how you work to strengthen your traditions, customs, and stories.

E, além disso, se você puder falar um pouco sobre os produtos que vocês elaboram

And, besides that, if you could talk a little about the products you develop.

e técnicas de construção de objetos, casas e etc.

E aí, como eu falei anteriormente, a nossa lagoa é encantada.

Hey, as I mentioned before, our lagoon is enchanted.

Encantada porque o encanto vive nela.

Enchanted because the enchantment lives within her.

Nossa mãe d'água, nossa história, nossas crenças.

Our mother of the waters, our history, our beliefs.

É da lagoa que tiramos nossa principal forma de subsistência.

It is from the lagoon that we draw our main source of livelihood.

E é dela que tiramos águas para regar nossas hortas.

And it is from her that we take water to irrigate our gardens.

A lagoa é dona de toda a história do povo genipapo canidé e ela rega o nosso povo.

The lagoon owns the entire history of the Genipapo Canidé people, and it nurtures our people.

Então, a vó conta várias histórias para a gente da lagoa.

So, grandma tells us several stories about the lagoon.

Tem uma aqui. Sempre que eu posso, eu conto para as pessoas.

There's one here. Whenever I can, I tell people about it.

Que ela disse que uma vez o nosso tio Adorico, que era o antigo cacique,

That she said that once our uncle Adorico, who was the former chief,

ele ia pegar água na lagoa, todo dia num balde.

He was going to get water from the pond every day in a bucket.

E aí, certa vez, ele viu um peixe muito grande.

And then, one time, he saw a very big fish.

Então, ele voltou para casa e pegou um arpão para lançar o peixe.

So, he returned home and grabbed a harpoon to catch the fish.

E foi lá e lanceou, né? Voltou para a lagoa e lanceou aquele peixe.

And he went there and cast, right? He went back to the lagoon and cast that fish.

Porém, o peixe fugiu. E aí, ele fugiu com o arpão do tio Adorico.

However, the fish got away. And then, it swam away with Uncle Adorico's harpoon.

E aí, no outro dia, ele voltou para pegar água.

And then, the other day, he came back to get water.

E lá estava uma moça muito bonita, com cabelos longos.

And there was a very beautiful young woman with long hair.

Então, ela disse assim.

So, she said like this.

Você lanceou meu pai.

You speared my father.

E aí, o tio Adorico falou.

And then, Uncle Adorico spoke.

Não, não lanceei. Eu lancei um peixe.

No, I didn't cast. I caught a fish.

E ela tornou a falar, né? Não desistiu. Ela falou.

And she started speaking again, right? She didn't give up. She spoke.

Você lanceou meu pai.

You lanced my father.

E ele disse. Não, eu lancei um peixe.

And he said. No, I caught a fish.

E aí, então, ela disse assim.

So then, she said like this.

Eu vou te mostrar. Suba em minhas costas, feche os olhos e só abra quando eu mandar.

I will show you. Climb on my back, close your eyes, and only open them when I say to.

E assim, o tio Adorico fez.

And so, Uncle Adorico did.

E aí, então, ela pediu para ele abrir os olhos.

And then she asked him to open his eyes.

E quando ele abriu, ele estava em um lugar muito encantado, cheio de ouro.

And when he opened it, he was in a very enchanted place, full of gold.

Então, ele tirou o arpão lá do pai dele e do pai dela.

So, he took the harpoon from his father and her father.

E aí, eles perguntaram se ele queria ficar lá.

So, they asked him if he wanted to stay there.

E ele disse que não, né? Que tinha a família para cuidar aqui em cima.

And he said no, right? That he had the family to take care of up here.

E que tinha o povo também dele para cuidar.

And that the people also had him to take care of.

Então, ele voltou para casa.

So, he went back home.

Ela pediu para ele fechar os olhos e abrir somente quando ele mandasse, né?

She asked him to close his eyes and only open them when he said to, right?

E assim, ele fez.

And so, he did.

E ele voltou para a superfície para sua vida normal, sua rotina, né?

And he returned to the surface for his normal life, his routine, right?

E aí, são essas e muitas outras histórias que nossos guardiões nos contam

And so, these and many other stories are what our guardians tell us.

que nos fazem acreditar que realmente nossa lagoa é encantada.

that makes us believe that our lagoon is truly enchanted.

Lagoa essa que dá nome à aldeia, né?

This lagoon gives its name to the village, right?

Lagoa encantada.

Enchanted lagoon.

Mas é isso.

But that's it.

E aí, com relação à nossa tradição, à nossa cultura, a gente vive tudo.

Hey, regarding our tradition, our culture, we experience everything.

A gente vive toda a nossa cultura.

We live our entire culture.

A gente dança nosso toré.

We dance our toré.

Temos nossas crenças, nossas festas tradicionais.

We have our beliefs, our traditional festivals.

Produzimos nossos artesanatos de cipó e também com sementes.

We produce our crafts from vines and also with seeds.

E já nas nossas casas, que é uma pergunta que a gente recebe muito enquanto povo indígena,

And already in our homes, which is a question we receive a lot as Indigenous people,

é se nossas casas são ocas, né?

It's if our homes are hollow, right?

Ou se são feitas de palha.

Or if they are made of straw.

E não, nossa casa é de tijolo normal, né?

And no, our house is made of regular brick, right?

De alvenaria.

Masonry.

E aí, a gente aprendeu a viver e conviver nesse mundo que quer acabar com nossa cultura, né?

So, we learned to live and coexist in this world that wants to end our culture, right?

Com a cultura indígena.

With indigenous culture.

Com a cultura indígena até hoje.

With indigenous culture to this day.

E aí, tem uma fala da casa pequena que ela diz, né?

Hey, there's a line from the small house that she says, right?

Que não somos povos emergentes, somos povos existentes e resistentes.

That we are not emerging peoples, we are existing and resistant peoples.

E é uma frase muito forte, né?

And it's a very strong sentence, right?

Que a gente aprendeu desde cedo.

What we learned from an early age.

Então, com relação às nossas tradições, a gente também tem algumas festas, né?

So, regarding our traditions, we also have some celebrations, right?

Aí temos a festa do Marco Vivo, que acontece todo dia 9 de abril.

There we have the Marco Vivo party, which takes place every April 9th.

Que é a festa que celebra a delimitação do nosso território.

What is the party that celebrates the delimitation of our territory?

Então, todo dia 9 de abril, a gente pega um pau de burana, que é uma planta aqui na nossa aldeia.

So, every day on April 9th, we take a burana stick, which is a plant here in our village.

E a gente vai e demarca cada extremidade do nosso chão.

And we go and mark each edge of our ground.

Para que possamos assegurar o direito à nossa mãe terra, né?

So that we can ensure the right to our mother earth, right?

Outra festa que a gente tem é a festa do Mocororó.

Another party we have is the Mocororó party.

Que é uma festa tradicional que leva o nome de uma bebida, né?

What is a traditional party that takes the name of a drink, right?

Que é o Mocororó, que é uma bebida feita a partir da fermentação do cajuazeiro.

What is Mocororó, which is a drink made from the fermentation of the cashew tree?

E aí, nesse dia é um dia de muita alegria, muitas danças, muitas brincadeiras.

And then, on that day, it is a day of much joy, many dances, many games.

A culinária também é toda indígena, então a gente faz muita tapioca, muito beiju, muito peixe assado.

The cuisine is also entirely indigenous, so we make a lot of tapioca, a lot of beiju, and a lot of roasted fish.

E aí, em todas essas festas, a gente tem também o nosso Toré, que é um ritual sagrado.

And there, in all these celebrations, we also have our Toré, which is a sacred ritual.

Que é praticado pelos povos indígenas do Ceará, né?

What is practiced by the indigenous peoples of Ceará, right?

Que é onde a gente pede força aos nossos encantados, ao Pai Tupã, Mãe Tamaí e à Mãe Natureza.

This is where we ask for strength from our enchanted ones, from Father Tupã, Mother Tamaí, and Mother Nature.

Para que a gente possa continuar resistindo e existindo nesse mundo, nessa terra.

So that we can continue to resist and exist in this world, on this earth.

Como é lutar pela preservação do seu território

That's where together we fight for land, health, and education.

E aí, nossas terras, elas estão sempre em constante violação.

And there, our lands are always in constant violation.

É tanto que esse governo que é genocida, que é um governo que mata,

It is so much that this government is genocidal, that it is a government that kills,

que é etnocida, ele quer tirar nossas terras.

he is ethnocidal, he wants to take our lands.

Eles querem nos matar, né?

They want to kill us, right?

A gente costuma dizer isso.

We usually say that.

Como eu falei no início, porque eu não tinha como falar do povo de Itapucandé sem falar da cacique pequena, entende?

As I said at the beginning, because I couldn't talk about the people of Itapucandé without mentioning the little chief, you know?

Então, a avó, a cacique pequena, ela é o centro da nossa aldeia.

So, the grandmother, the little chief, she is the center of our village.

A gente costuma dizer que ela é a mãe de toda a aldeia, né, cacique pequena, mãe de toda a aldeia.

We usually say that she is the mother of the whole village, right, little chief, mother of the whole village.

Porque foi ela que abriu o espaço para que outras mulheres pudessem exercer outros cargos dentro e fora da comunidade.

Because it was she who opened the space for other women to hold other positions inside and outside the community.

E aí não é à toa que nossa comunidade, ela é mandada por mulheres.

And it's no surprise that our community is led by women.

A gente costuma dizer assim, né, que o povo de Itapucandé não tem homem não, só tem mulher.

We usually say that the people of Itapucandé have no men, only women.

Porque em todos os aspectos, as mulheres, elas estão à frente, né, das organizações.

Because in every aspect, women are ahead in organizations, right?

Temos a Associação das Mulheres, que é uma mulher que está na frente.

We have the Women's Association, which is a woman leading the way.

Temos mulheres na saúde.

We have women in health.

Temos mulheres na educação.

We have women in education.

E no movimento indígena, como a cacique pequena.

And in the indigenous movement, like the little chief.

Temos as outras duas filhas, que é a cacique Jureme e a cacique Irê, que estão juntas com a cacique pequena nessa demanda pelo caciqueado.

We have the other two daughters, which are Chief Jureme and Chief Irê, who are together with the little chief in this quest for the chieftaincy.

E atualmente, essas mulheres, elas estão ocupando todos os espaços, inclusive a política.

And currently, these women are occupying all spaces, including politics.

Nosso povo, ele está com a candidata estadual, que é a Juliana Alves, cacique Irê.

E desse modo, não só a cacique pequena, mas como todas as mulheres.
