O cozinheiro ficou meio desconfiado, mas mesmo assim, pegou a melancia e agradeceu.

The cook was a bit suspicious, but still took the watermelon and thanked.

E o estranho foi-se embora desaparecendo na mata.

And the stranger left, disappearing into the woods.

Quando o sol se pôs, os companheiros voltaram do trabalho, tomaram um banho e foram jantar.

When the sun set, the companions returned from work, took a shower, and went to dinner.

Então, o cozinheiro lhes mostrou a melancia.

So, the cook showed them the watermelon.

Vocês disseram que era bobagem querer melancia neste lugar, mas aqui está uma.

Às oito da noite, os trabalhadores foram se deitar e logo estavam todos dormindo e roncando.

At eight in the evening, the workers went to bed and soon they were all sleeping and snoring.

Todos, menos o cozinheiro, que continuava desconfiado.

Everyone, except the cook, who remained suspicious.

De repente, ele ouviu uma zoada terrível.

Suddenly, he heard a terrible noise.

Parecia barulhos de águas.

It sounded like noises of water.

Tinha animais em debandada soltando rosnados e risadas estridentes que varavam a floresta e vinham andar no acampamento.

There were animals fleeing, letting out growls and piercing laughs that pierced through the forest and came to walk around the camp.

O cozinheiro pulou da rede e chamou os companheiros.

The cook jumped off the net and called the companions.

Depressa, pessoal! Vem vindo alguém!

Hurry, everyone! Someone is coming!

Mas ninguém acordou.

But no one woke up.

Por mais que o cozinheiro chamasse e gritasse, os trabalhadores continuavam dormindo.

No matter how much the cook called and shouted, the workers kept sleeping.

E a barulheira continuava.

And the noise continued.

A barulheira continuava se aproximando.

The noise was getting closer.

Sem perder mais tempo, o cozinheiro saiu correndo até o rio e mergulhou na água.

Without wasting any more time, the cook ran to the river and jumped into the water.

Então, virou uma das canoas que estavam ali encostadas e se escondeu debaixo dela.

Then, he flipped one of the canoes that were leaning against there and hid underneath it.

Logo, os bichos estavam no acampamento.

Soon, the animals were at the camp.

Sempre na maior gritaria.

Always in the loudest shouting.

Eram homens-morcegos enormes, os Cão-Era.

They were enormous bat-men, the Dog-Was.

Bichos de estimação demoníacos de Anhanga.

Demonic pets of Anhanga.

Mal chegaram, já foram devorando os trabalhadores que dormiam.

As soon as they arrived, they began devouring the sleeping workers.

Debaixo da canoa, sem poder fazer nada, o cozinheiro ouvia o ruído de ossos se quebrando com as mordidas dos demônios.

Under the canoe, unable to do anything, the cook heard the sound of bones breaking with the demons' bites.

Então, ouviu um dos Cão-Era dizer.

So, did you hear one of the Dog-Eras say?

— Contei todos, mas ainda falta um.

—I counted them all, but one is still missing.

É o homem para quem eu dei a melancia.

He is the man to whom I gave the watermelon.

Vamos procurá-lo.

Let's look for him.

E todos saíram em busca do cozinheiro.

And everyone set out in search of the cook.

Procuraram por todos os lados até chegar à beira do rio.

They searched everywhere until they reached the riverbank.

Furiosos, furaram todas as canoas com suas garras poderosas.

Furious, they punctured all the canoes with their powerful claws.

Mas aquela em que o cozinheiro se escondia ficou intacta.

But the one where the cook was hiding remained intact.

Pois os demônios não imaginaram que alguém pudesse estar dentro de uma canoa emborcada.

For the demons did not imagine that someone could be inside an upside-down canoe.

Depois de um certo tempo, desistiram de procurar e voltaram para o meio da escuridão da floresta,

After a certain time, they gave up searching and returned to the darkness of the forest.

sempre muito ruidosos, fazendo estalar paus de tocos em sua passagem.

E só voltou ao acampamento no dia seguinte, depois que o sol apareceu.

And he only returned to the camp the next day, after the sun came up.

Horrorizado, viu os ossos dos companheiros que tinham sido devorados pelos Cão-Era.

Horrified, he saw the bones of his companions that had been devoured by the Era-Dog.

Nada podia ser feito.

Nothing could be done.

Então, ele pegou um remo e foi para a cidade, onde contou o que havia acontecido.

So, he took a paddle and went to the city, where he told what had happened.

A cidade ficou em alvoroço.

The city was in an uproar.

Os moradores se organizaram formando um batalhão para enterrar os ossos dos trabalhadores e punir os culpados por aquela chacina.

The residents organized themselves into a battalion to bury the bones of the workers and punish those responsible for that massacre.

Vinte homens, armados com terçados, paus e espingardas, rumaram para o acampamento, acompanhados pelo cozinheiro.

Twenty men, armed with machetes, sticks, and rifles, headed to the camp, accompanied by the cook.

Todos se comoveram diante da visão terrível da desgraça dos companheiros.

Everyone was moved by the terrible sight of their companions' misfortune.

Enterraram seus restos e, no começo da tarde, saíram à caça dos morcegos.

They buried his remains and, in the early afternoon, went out hunting for bats.

Guiados pelo cozinheiro, seguiram o caminho pelo qual os Cão-Era tinham voltado para a mata.

Guided by the cook, they followed the path that the Dog-Men had taken back into the forest.

Depois de andar muito, deram com uma imensa árvore seca, com um buraco enorme no tronco.

After walking a lot, they came across a huge dry tree with a huge hole in its trunk.

Só podia sofrer.

I could only suffer.

Morram, morcegos! Morram, filhos de Anhanga!

Die, bats! Die, children of Anhanga!

Certos de que tinham exterminado os Cão-Era, os moradores da cidade descansaram um pouco em volta da árvore queimada e depois se prepararam para iniciar o caminho de volta.

Certain that they had exterminated the Dog-Era, the townspeople rested a bit around the burnt tree and then prepared to start the journey back.

Mas então, um deles gritou...

But then, one of them shouted...

Vejam, amigos! Sobrou um morcego vivo! É um filhote!

Look, friends! There's a living bat left! It's a baby!

Mate-o logo! Gritaram os outros.

Kill him already! shouted the others.

Matar por quê? O rapaz retrucou.

Kill for what? The boy retorted.

É melhor levá-lo como prova de nossa façanha, afinal ele é muito pequeno e não poderá nos fazer mal.

It's better to take him as proof of our feat, after all, he is very small and can't do us any harm.

É bom não brincar com essas coisas, disseram os outros.

Apesar da relutância do grupo, o rapaz pegou fibras de waruman...

Fez um cesto, colocou dentro dele o filhote de Cão-Era e seguiu com ele atrás dos companheiros.

He made a basket, placed the Puppy inside it, and followed his companions with it.

Os homens andaram, andaram e nada de chegar à beira do rio onde pegariam as canoas para voltar.

The men walked, walked, and still didn’t reach the riverbank where they would take the canoes to return.

O sol já ia se pondo quando o penúltimo da fila se virou para o rapaz que carregava o filhote de morcego e achou que ele estava muito pálido.

The sun was already setting when the second to last in line turned to the boy carrying the baby bat and thought he looked very pale.

Recuou para observá-lo mais de perto e viu um imenso buraco em suas costas.

He stepped back to observe him more closely and saw a huge hole in his back.

O rapaz estava sendo devorado sem sentir.

The boy was being devoured without feeling.

A essa altura, todos haviam parado para ver o que estava acontecendo, mas já não puderam.

By this point, everyone had stopped to see what was happening, but they could no longer do so.

Ao fazer nada, o rapaz caiu morto no chão.

While doing nothing, the young man fell dead on the ground.

O filhote de Cão-Era se desprendeu de seu corpo e saiu voando para o mato.

The Dog-Face puppy detached from its body and flew away into the bush.

Foi um rebuliço geral.

There was a general commotion.

Os homens se apavoraram.

The men were terrified.

Tinham de levar embora o companheiro morto e enfrentar o risco de encontrar aquele demônio que estava às soltas.

They had to take away the dead companion and face the risk of encountering that demon that was on the loose.

Resolveram seguir caminho o mais depressa possível, só que quanto mais andavam, mais...

They decided to go as fast as possible, but the more they walked, the more...

mais se sentiam perdidos.

but they felt more lost.

O sol se pôs.

The sun has set.

Veio a noite, e eles não ouviam o barulho de nenhuma ave e nem mesmo o do vento.

Night came, and they heard neither the sound of any bird nor even that of the wind.

Aquele silêncio sufocante os deixava mais nervosos ainda.

That suffocating silence made them even more anxious.

Então, de repente, ouviram uma risada.

So, suddenly, they heard a laugh.

Os homens quase caíram de costas de tanto susto.

The men almost fell backwards from so much fright.

De cabelos arrepiados, suando frio, ficaram imóveis por um tempo, olhando para todos os lados.

With their hair standing on end, sweating cold, they remained still for a while, looking in every direction.

Então, largaram o cadáver e recomeçaram a andar sempre em fila, só que mais devagar.

So, they dropped the corpse and started walking again in a line, only this time more slowly.

De repente, mais um grito partiu silêncio como uma rajada.

Suddenly, another scream broke the silence like a gust.

Só pode ser o filhote de canguera que está querendo nos assustar, eles diziam.

It must be the kangaroo joey trying to scare us, they said.

Um deles tentou animar os companheiros.

One of them tried to cheer up the companions.

Ora, por que ter medo? Afinal, é só um filhote.

Well, why be afraid? After all, it's just a puppy.

Vamos matá-lo e nos livrar de uma vez por todas desses monstros.

Let's kill him and get rid of these monsters once and for all.

Encorajados, os homens empunharam as espingardas e se prepararam para enfrentar o filhote.

Mas, para sua surpresa, quando o que ia à frente levantou a lanterna para iluminar o caminho,

o que apareceu à sua frente foi um canguera grande e medonho.

What appeared in front of you was a big and fearsome kangaroo.

Foi um terror.

It was a nightmare.

Todos saíram correndo, cada um para um lado, e só se ouviam tiros de espingarda e gritos de gente pedindo socorro.

Everyone ran off in different directions, and all that could be heard were gunshots and screams of people asking for help.

Até que, de repente, o silêncio voltou.

Until suddenly, the silence returned.

Ninguém dizia nada.

No one said anything.

Ninguém se mexia.

Nobody moved.

O tempo passou, e quando amanheceu, só se via um cadáveres por todo o lado.

Time passed, and when morning came, all that could be seen were corpses everywhere.

O cão-era tinha sumido.

The dog had disappeared.

O único homem do grupo que tinha permanecido vivo foi andando até a beira do rio e conseguiu chegar à cidade.

The only man in the group who had remained alive walked to the riverbank and managed to reach the city.
