Ok. Sim, eu tenho 33 anos, eu sou licenciado em farmácia, acabei o curso em 2008 e desde então sempre trabalhei em farmácia comunitária,

Em 2020, por acaso, mudei de emprego e estou a trabalhar agora no estabelecimento prisional do Porto, na farmácia dos serviços clínicos.

É um bocadinho diferente, cabe por ter agora um bocadinho mais de tempo livre, dá para me dedicar um bocadinho mais a isto.

E pronto, quanto à escrita por si só, não sei, eu sempre gostei muito de histórias e sempre inventei histórias já desde pequeno,

Só enquanto brincava com o meu irmão, por exemplo, nós tínhamos imensos bonecos diferentes, de Dragon Ball, Power Rangers,

mesmo do Wrestling e assim, misturávamos aquilo tudo, brincavamos imenso com aquilo, sempre com uma história continuada.

Even with Wrestling and such, we mixed it all up, we played a lot with it, always with a continued story.

E pronto, isso não estava propriamente no papel, mas havia a construção da história.

And there you go, that wasn't exactly on paper, but there was the construction of the story.

Depois foi realmente começar a escrever, era algo que eu sempre quis fazer, começar a pôr mesmo isso no papel,

Then it was really about starting to write, it was something I had always wanted to do, to start putting this on paper.

e fui tentando algumas vezes, até que, pronto, desta vez consegui levar em frente.

And I kept trying a few times until, finally, this time I managed to go through with it.

Então a imaginação sempre esteve lá, depois foi mais passá-lo mesmo ao papel.

So the imagination was always there, then it was just a matter of putting it on paper.

Diz-se que desde sempre quis passar essa imaginação para o papel.

Ou seja, quando era estudante já se imaginava nessa via? Já sonhava em ser escritora ou não estava nos seus postos?

In other words, when you were a student, did you already see yourself on this path? Did you dream of being a writer or was it not on your radar?

Eu penso que sim, não tenho a certeza se sonhava mesmo com isso, mas eu, por exemplo, enquanto estudante,

eu já ia escrevendo algumas coisas, maioritariamente poesia.

I was already writing some things, mostly poetry.

Não tinha muito jeito, para a rima ainda vá que não vá, mas não vou muito com a métrica.

It didn't really work, the rhyme is okay, but I'm not too fond of the meter.

O sentimento estava lá, porque acho que enquanto adolescente nós sentimos tudo muito intensamente,

The feeling was there because I think that as teenagers we feel everything very intensely,

e então o sentimento na poesia, que é uma coisa muito importante na poesia, pelo menos na minha opinião,

and so the feeling in poetry, which is a very important thing in poetry, at least in my opinion,

isso conseguia ter, e aliás, acho que durante a adolescência é uma altura ótima para conseguirmos canalizar

this could be achieved, and by the way, I think that during adolescence is a great time to be able to channel it.

todo esse sentimento, todas essas emoções para algo criativo.

E depois de criarmos esse hábito, penso que será mais fácil construir algo a partir daí.

Chegou a escrever algo enquanto...

Did you ever write anything while...

Enquanto estudante, adolescente?

As a student, teenager?

É assim, enquanto adolescente cheguei alguma vez a escrever, lá está, escrevi alguns poemas,

That's it, as a teenager I once wrote, there you go, I wrote some poems,

e cheguei a concorrer uma vez lá na escola, no décimo segundo, a um concurso de poesia na escola,

I even competed once there in school, in twelfth grade, in a poetry contest at school,

e na altura fiquei em terceiro, empatado com uma colega minha, que mais tarde conheci no curso,

and at that time I came in third, tied with a colleague of mine, who I later met in the course,

que por acaso foi tirar o mesmo curso que eu.

Mas nem sei onde tenho isso atualmente, mas foi a minha diretora de turma que me obrigou na altura a concorrer.

Mas lá está, são coisas que nunca levei muito em frente.

Quanto às histórias propriamente ditas, depois já tentei várias vezes começar, só que acabava por desistir.

Eu muitas vezes pego nas coisas, começo, entusiasmo-me imenso com aquilo durante dois dias, uma semana, um mês, na loucura,

I often pick up things, start them, get immensely excited about them for two days, a week, a month, in a frenzy,

e depois acabo por largar.

and then I end up letting go.

Esta vez com o livro, não sei, acho que foi um bocado diferente, não sei dizer exatamente porquê.

This time with the book, I don't know, I think it was a bit different, I can't exactly say why.

Eu sou um bocado teimoso também, e acho que eu tinha alguns colegas que me diziam,

I am a bit stubborn too, and I think I had some colleagues who told me,

tenho um grande amigo que por acaso ele dizia-me várias vezes,

I have a great friend who happened to tell me several times,

ainda estás com isso, o livro? E eu tipo, ainda estás com isso? Agora é que vou acabar mesmo.

Are you still with that, the book? And I'm like, are you still with that? Now I'm really going to finish it.

Então não sei, acho que isso me deu algum ânimo para continuar.

So I don't know, I think that gave me some motivation to keep going.

E aproveitei, por exemplo, dessas várias...

And I took advantage, for example, of those various...

histórias, ideias que ia tendo e que nunca cheguei a levar em frente,

stories, ideas that I was having and that I never ended up pursuing,

eu aproveitei algumas dessas ideias, acabei por as reciclar um bocadinho e introduzir neste livro também.

I took advantage of some of these ideas, ended up recycling them a bit, and introduced them into this book as well.

Pronto, já percebi que, para ti, que não é difícil escrever,

mas agora como é que tu fazes para coordenar o trabalho com o tempo, a motivação?

But now how do you manage to coordinate work with time and motivation?

Porque também é preciso a motivação para escrever.

Because motivation is also needed to write.

Fala-nos um bocadinho sobre isso.

Tell us a little bit about that.

Ok.

Okay.

Eu, no outro trabalho que eu tinha de antes, eu acabava por ter muito pouco tempo livre,

I, in the other job I had before, ended up having very little free time,

e eu trabalhava cerca de 50 horas por semana, e é mesmo demasiado.

And I worked about 50 hours a week, and it's really too much.

E este livro demorou cerca de dois anos, dois anos e qualquer coisa a escrever,

And this book took about two years, two years and a little more to write,

e depois, porque lá está, era só no tempo livre, e depois mais um ano para editar,

and then, because that's how it was, it was only in my free time, and then another year to edit,

e traduzir também para inglês.

and translate it into English as well.

E agora, com este trabalho, que tenho muito mais tempo livre,

And now, with this job, I have much more free time,

pelas minhas contas eu já devia ir para aí no terceiro, mas vou bem no segundo.

By my calculations, I should already be there on the third, but I'll go well on the second.

Acho que funciona um bocadinho ao contrário, quanto mais tempo livre tenho,

acabo por passar mais tempo a procrastinar.

I end up spending more time procrastinating.

Por exemplo, eu hoje e ontem estive, ou ontem e hoje, estive de folga,

e eu não fiz absolutamente nada nos dois dias, ou nada produtivo.

And I did absolutely nothing for two days, or nothing productive.

I was just going to ask if you wrote something every day, but no.

Maybe I should, I don't know.

Eu muitas vezes acabo por acontecer, por exemplo, num dia que entro só às onze da manhã,

I often end up happening, for example, on a day when I only start at eleven in the morning,

ou algum dia assim mais tarde, e acabo por me levantar tipo oito, oito e meio ou mais tardar,

or some day later like that, and I end up getting up around eight, eight-thirty or at the latest,

e tenho aquele tempo, duas horas e tal de manhã, e penso, por duas horas também vou começar.

And I have that time, two hours or so in the morning, and I think, for two hours I'll also start.

Parece que não vai dar para nada, mas isso é uma desculpa.

It seems that nothing will come of it, but that's just an excuse.

Dava para, nem que fosse para esboçar alguma coisa e depois trabalhar isso melhor.

It was possible to at least sketch something and then work on it better.

Outros dias pego e fico um sábado inteiro a escrever e até faço dois, três capítulos.

On other days, I sit down and spend an entire Saturday writing, and I even finish two or three chapters.

Às vezes passa um mês que não faço nada.

Sometimes a month goes by without me doing anything.

Nisso falta-me algum controle, nisso.

In this, I lack some control.

Não sei, mas também varia um bocado.

Porque, por exemplo, há alturas em que eu tenho as coisas um bocado delineadas

E começo a escrever nesse sentido.

E parece que as coisas me começam a sair um bocado forçadas.

E então perco o ânimo, e é daqueles dias...

And then I lose my spirit, and it's one of those days...

Porque é que eu continuo a fazer isto?

Why do I keep doing this?

Mais valia desistir?

Was it worth giving up?

E paro dois, três dias, distancio-me daquilo, até que um dia acordo de manhã e já saio.

And I stop for two, three days, I distance myself from it, until one day I wake up in the morning and just leave.

E em vez de fazer assim, dou mais uma volta com dois, três capítulos, quatro

And instead of doing it like this, I take another turn with two, three chapters, four.

e acabo por ir dar ao ponto que eu queria de uma forma mais natural,

and I end up getting to the point I wanted in a more natural way,

de uma forma que faça sentido e não seja tão forçada.

In a way that makes sense and isn't too forced.

Ou seja, eu acabo por escrever mais quando não estou a escrever.

In other words, I end up writing more when I'm not writing.

Tipo, só aqui.

Like, just here.

E ir solucionando essas coisas.

And solving these things.

Do que propriamente quando estou sentado a tentar forçar-me a escrever.

Rather than when I'm sitting trying to force myself to write.

Por exemplo, há pouco disse-vos que estive agora no semestre passado a dar aulas

For example, I just told you that I was teaching last semester.

e nessa altura eu não tinha tempo para escrever nada.

At that time, I didn't have time to write anything.

Eu ia tendo algum, mas preferia concentrar-me mais naquilo,

I was having some, but I preferred to focus more on that.

não estar a dividir a minha atenção por tanta coisa ao mesmo tempo.

E então tive meio ano em que não escrevia nada.

And so I had half a year in which I didn't write anything.

And I sometimes woke up at night with ideas.

E então era sempre telemóvel, notas, vai acontecer isto assim e tal.

And then it was always mobile phone, notes, this is going to happen like this and so on.

And I have a series of notes because of that.

Dessa altura em que queria escrever, mas ao mesmo tempo não me permitia.

Já agora, agora que tenho mais tempo e posso estar a fazer isso,

Maioritariamente o que escrevo acaba por ser para direcionar mais para o livro.

Para nós, parece-nos assim um bocadinho estranho.

To us, it seems a bit strange this way.

Pessoas assim tão ligadas à ciência, serem tão apaixonadas pela leitura.

People who are so connected to science are so passionate about reading.

Para ti, qual foi a ligação?

For you, what was the connection?

Encontraste alguma ligação entre estas duas áreas?

Did you find any connection between these two areas?

Ou são simplesmente tuas?

Or are they just yours?

Coisas nada a ver que tu conseguiste incluir na tua vida?

É assim, aquilo passa-se num universo futurista, no fundo.

Num outro planeta que acaba por ser uma espécie de segunda terra.

E nesse planeta há uma aliança entre vários países,

que está em guerra contra um outro país, uma nação que eles julgavam extinta,

that is at war against another country, a nation they believed to be extinct,

e que está agora a ameaçá-los de certa forma.

Um deles é um prisioneiro, que está num planeta,

que é um planeta mesmo, um planeta prisão apenas,

é separado daquele planeta principal onde os outros estão,

it is separated from that main planet where the others are,

e a história dele começa, no fundo,

And his story starts, in essence,

Quando surge um novo recluso, que é alguém do passado dele,

When a new recluse emerges, who is someone from his past,

que lhe diz que está ali para o tirar de lá.

Além desse, tem outros personagens,

há uma outra personagem que é uma prostituta geneticamente modificada,
