Episódio 10 - Memória Operária

São Paulo começou o século XX com tudo.

São Paulo started the 20th century strong.

A pequena cidade bucólica, com algumas dezenas de milhares de moradores,

The small bucolic town, with a few tens of thousands of residents,

foi abrindo espaço para trilhos de trem, fábricas e uma população cada vez maior.

It was making way for train tracks, factories, and an increasingly larger population.

E aí, em 1914, veio a Primeira Guerra, que abalou a economia de todos os países no mundo.

And then, in 1914, came the First World War, which shook the economy of all countries in the world.

O Brasil dependia da importação de, entre tantas coisas, tecidos.

Brazil depended on the import of, among many things, fabrics.

Com o comércio abalado, a gente parou de importar.

With the trade shaken, we stopped importing.

O que levou as fábricas de fiação e tesselagem a dobrar, triplicar a sua produção.

What led the spinning and weaving factories to double or triple their production?

Em seguida, elas passaram a exportar.

Then, they started to export.

Lucros lá no alto, máquinas a todo vapor.

Profits are sky high, machines at full steam.

Parece uma história de sucesso.

It seems like a success story.

Só que, para tudo isso acontecer, as fábricas precisavam de muita, mas muita mão de obra.

It's just that, for all this to happen, the factories needed a lot, but a lot of manpower.

O ritmo de produção era insano.

The production pace was insane.

Homens, mulheres e crianças pisavam no chão da fábrica antes do raiar do dia

Men, women, and children treaded on the factory floor before dawn.

e largavam o batente à noite.

and they would leave the threshold at night.

Os turnos eram de 16 horas.

The shifts were 16 hours long.

A insalubridade dentro e fora da fábrica adoecia os corpos.

The unhealthy conditions inside and outside the factory were making people sick.

A temida gripe espanhola, por exemplo, matou 8 mil pessoas em quatro dias.

The feared Spanish flu, for example, killed 8,000 people in four days.

Os lucros das fábricas não paravam de crescer.

The profits of the factories kept growing.

E os salários dos trabalhadores eram muito baixos.

And the workers' salaries were very low.

Em 1917, trabalhadores do Cotonifício Crespi, fábrica localizada no bairro da Moca,

In 1917, workers from the Crespi Cotton Mill, a factory located in the Moca neighborhood,

organizaram uma greve que foi um verdadeiro divisor de águas da história do trabalho da cidade.

They organized a strike that was a true turning point in the history of work in the city.

A greve geral de 17 foi documentada, o que nos dá boas pistas de como foi esse evento.

recebiam salários menores do que os dos homens, né?

They received lower salaries than men, right?

Não existia essa regulamentação do trabalho, como a gente já falou,

e, portanto, era uma forma de economizar, de ter mão de obra e economizar.

And, therefore, it was a way to save money, to have labor and save.

Então, trabalhava a família inteira dentro da fábrica.

So, the whole family worked inside the factory.

No mês seguinte à paralisação do cotonifício, em 9 de julho,

uma multidão marchou pelas ruas estreitas da região do Brás.

A crowd marched through the narrow streets of the Brás region.

Que eram bastante organizados, já desde a primeira década do século, né?

Já tinham uma organização muito forte, sindical.

They already had a very strong union organization.

E isso impulsionou que outras tecelagens ali, não só da Moca,

And this drove other weavers there, not just from Moca,

mas de toda a região central da cidade de São Paulo,

entrassem também em greve.

Nessa época, começaram a pipocar as famosas

A vila foi fundada pelo industrial carioca Jorge Street,

Na época, a fábrica tinha mais de 2 mil operários,

There was a daycare, pharmacy, butcher, school, and church.

Tudo isso era novidade, e acabou servindo de inspiração

Mas faz sentido falar em operariado hoje?

O subemprego e a informalidade obrigam cada vez mais pessoas

Então, acho que esse senso de vizinhança

A gente sempre acha que em São Paulo isso está se perdendo um pouco,
