Eu era assistente já na época de filme, fiquei uns 4, 5 anos, um pouquinho menos, talvez uns 3, 4 anos,

I was an assistant back when I was in film, I stayed for about 4 or 5 years, a little less, perhaps around 3 or 4 years.

como assistente na época de filme e aí quando cheguei a comprar uma câmera, estava fotografando já,

as an assistant during the movie period and then when I bought a camera, I was already photographing,

estava quase assim, conseguindo me profissionalizar ali, quando veio o digital e invadiu tudo,

I was almost there, managing to professionalize myself, when the digital came and invaded everything.

você lembra que assim, na hora, na época, fecharam o laboratório?

foi uma coisa de louco, assim, e eu tive muita sorte de começar com um filme muito difícil, pelo custo, né?

It was a crazy thing, you know, and I was very lucky to start with a very difficult film, given the cost, right?

Então, se eu ia revelar um filme, era muito complicado, como eu estava ali na Editora Globo, no dia a dia,

So, if I was going to develop a film, it was very complicated, since I was there at Editora Globo, day by day,

Então, ali eu conseguia, conseguia revelar sempre um filmezinho de Cromo que sobrava pra mim ali,

eu conseguia bater, então aprendi muito dessa maneira, eu até outro dia estava contando numa palestra minha,

I was able to hit, so I learned a lot that way, just the other day I was telling this in one of my lectures.

que acho que eu peguei, até agora, as mudanças principais do nosso tempo de fotografia, né?

I think I've grasped, so far, the main changes of our photography time, right?

Que foi a mudança pro digital, e agora essa mudança absurda pro mobile, pra sensores cada vez menores,

What was the shift to digital, and now this ridiculous shift to mobile, to increasingly smaller sensors,

assim, câmeras cada vez menores, que fazem imagens de alta qualidade,

thus, increasingly smaller cameras that take high-quality images,

é um, pra mim, privilégio pegar esse tempo na fotografia.

It is, for me, a privilege to take this time in photography.

Como que você chegou na Editora Globo ali, no Jaguaré, né?

How did you get to Editora Globo there, in Jaguaré, right?

No Jaguaré, Jaguaras. Cara, ali foi meio outros caminhos, na verdade, eu tinha uma amiga dentro da redação,

que era a Vanessa, você lembra da Vanessa, né?

Eu conheço a Vanessa desde que a gente é criança, a tia dela era muito amiga da minha mãe,

a gente se conhece há muitos anos, e eu trabalhava no CEDOC, lá embaixo,

we have known each other for many years, and I worked at CEDOC, down there,

eu tinha conseguido uma vaga no CEDOC, trabalhei uns dois anos no CEDOC, dos 16 até mais ou menos os 18,

I had secured a position at CEDOC, I worked for about two years at CEDOC, from age 16 until around 18.

contratado, registrado, tudo mais.

hired, registered, everything else.

Um dia veio um corte, me cortaram no CEDOC, foram embora lá, uma redução de custos lá, minha vaga não era nada boa,

One day a cut came, I was laid off at CEDOC, they left there, a cost reduction there, my position wasn't good at all.

e aí a Vanessa falou assim, Cauê, tem uma vaga aqui na redação,

and then Vanessa said, Cauê, there is an opening here in the newsroom,

e me levou pra ficar colocando etiqueta nos cromos.

and took me to keep putting labels on the stickers.

Você lembra de uma editora que tinha lá, não sei se você chegou a pegar ela, Cris alguma coisa,

Do you remember a publisher that used to be there, I don't know if you got to see it, something like Cris?

eu sou péssimo com lembrar esses nomes assim, porque Cris alguma coisa, Cris...

I'm terrible at remembering names like that, because Cris something, Cris...

Cris Vilares?

Cris Vilares?

Não era Cris Vilares, cara, Cris é fotógrafo, era uma outra editora que tinha lá no tempo,

It wasn't Cris Vilares, man, Cris is a photographer, it was another editor who was there at the time.

e fiquei um tempo lá fazendo essa assistência de colocar as legendas no cromo,

and I spent some time there providing assistance with adding the subtitles in the chrome,

a gente legendava todos os cromos lá, e aí passou um tempo e começou a entrar um monte de fotógrafo na revista,

We subtitled all the stickers there, and then after a while a bunch of photographers started coming into the magazine,

começou um monte de mudança ali, e nisso uma hora eu meio que desisti, falei cara,

a lot of changes started happening there, and at some point I kind of gave up, I said man,

eu gravava muito pouco lá, muito pouco, e eu tinha perdido minha mãe, sabe assim, esse tipo de coisa,

I recorded very little there, very little, and I had lost my mother, you know, that kind of thing.

eu falei cara, preciso trabalhar num negócio que me dê mais dinheiro, aqui não tô vendo muito perspectiva,

I said, man, I need to work on something that gives me more money, I don't see much perspective here.

e aí meio que ia sair fora de lá, não queria continuar mais,

and then I was kind of about to leave there, I didn’t want to stay anymore,

nisso o Rogério Albuquerque, que já era meu amigo lá, porque ele fazia muito retrato lá,

In this, Rogério Albuquerque, who was already my friend there, because he took a lot of portraits there,

ele falou não, meu, você tá viajando, faz assim, vem fazer um trabalho comigo como assistente,

he said no, man, you're out of touch, do this, come work with me as an assistant,

se você gostar, você continua, se você não gostar, tá beleza, aí segue sua vida,

if you like it, you continue, if you don’t like it, that's fine, then carry on with your life,

e aí esse trabalho foram 20 dias em Manaus, cara, já foi um negócio assim absurdo,

So this job was 20 days in Manaus, man, it was just something absurd.

que era um negócio que tinha 500 cobras no Brasil, e a gente foi pra Manaus,

it was a business that had 500 snakes in Brazil, and we went to Manaus,

ficou lá uns 20 dias, foi o Rogério e o Fabiano, e o Fabiano Corsica,

he stayed there for about 20 days, it was Rogério and Fabiano, and Fabiano Corsica.

eram os dois fotógrafos que tinham ali na época, e aí foi um absurdo, né, aí eu percebi,

they were the two photographers who were there at the time, and then it was absurd, right, then I realized,

cara, isso é muito louco, porque pra mim ali eu percebi o que eu gostava de verdade na fotografia,

Dude, this is so crazy, because for me there I realized what I truly liked about photography,

que era, ela pode te levar pra qualquer lugar, né cara, assim, a fotografia,

which was, it can take you anywhere, right man, like, photography,

pode alguém te ligar um dia e falar, meu, eu tenho um trabalho aqui em Paris,

Can someone call you one day and say, "Hey, I have a job here in Paris"?

como já aconteceu alguma vez comigo, eu não acredito, olha a fotografia me levando aí,

as has happened to me before, I don’t believe it, look at the photograph taking me there,

e eu percebi que eu adorava viajar, e aquilo me chamou muita atenção, e aí não era alguém mais, né,

and I realized that I loved to travel, and that caught my attention a lot, and then it wasn't someone else, right,

aí eu fiquei com o Rogério uns dois anos e meio, mas eu fazia com o Rogério,

then I stayed with Rogério for about two and a half years, but I did it with Rogério,

isso eu fazia de dia com o Rogério, fazia os retratos com ele de dia,

I used to do that during the day with Rogério, I would take the portraits with him during the day.

e de noite eu fazia assistência pra galera que fazia as festas, que, assim, fazia de tudo, né mano,

And at night I assisted the crowd that organized the parties, which, you know, did everything, right man,

que não tinha tempo ruim, sobrou uma pauta lá que ele ia me mandar, eu mandava,

that there was no bad time, there was a topic left there that he was going to send me, I would send it,

e é isso daí que o Tempo Trabalho foi, seu assistente nessa época, né,

and that's what the Time Work was, your assistant at that time, right,

você fazia bastante coisa lá, foi seu assistente, e de uma cacetada de gente, mano,

you did a lot there, you were their assistant, and to a ton of people, man,

Cleber Trevisan me ajudou num absurdo também nessa vida, cara fenomenal,

Cleber Trevisan helped me with an absurdity in this life too, phenomenal guy.

e aí, cara, com o passar do tempo, acho que os caras lá, o Rogério e o Daniel Aratangia,

Hey, man, as time goes by, I think the guys there, Rogério and Daniel Aratangia,

eles não gostavam muito de fazer as festas, né cara, eles, nossa,

they didn't really like to throw parties, right man, they, wow,

esse cara tinha raiva de ter que fazer festa, porque fazia um negócio de dia,

this guy was angry about having to throw a party because he had business during the day,

chegava gente e eles não queriam, e eu comecei a falar, cara, nem entra,

people were arriving and they didn't want to, and I started to say, dude, don't even come in,

fica aí na porta, dá a câmera pra mim, tinha que eu vou lá fazer,

Stay there at the door, give me the camera, I had to go do it.

e aí na primeira foi aquela desconfiança e tal, aí deu certo, na segunda deu certo,

and then in the first one there was that suspicion and so on, then it worked out, in the second one it worked out,

na terceira o Rogério nem perguntava, ele chegava na porta da festa e falou assim,

In the third one, Rogério didn’t even ask; he would arrive at the party door and said like this,

vai lá, vai lá, faz lá, faz lá,

go there, go there, do it there, do it there,

e aí uma hora a revista Ken começou a ficar muito legal, né,

And then at some point the Ken magazine started to get really cool, right?

porque aí a Joyce Pascovici entrou, e aí tinha muito dinheiro,

because then Joyce Pascovici entered, and there was a lot of money,

a gente tinha, mano, sete, oito fotógrafos contratados,

we had, man, seven, eight photographers hired,

quando que a gente imagina que um negócio desse vai acontecer de novo?

When do we imagine that something like this will happen again?

Nunca mais, nunca mais, quer dizer, e aí precisava de alguém pra fazer festa,

Never again, never again, I mean, so I needed someone to throw a party,

e eles estavam pensando que eles iam contratar alguém muito iniciante pra fazer festa,

and they were thinking that they were going to hire someone very inexperienced to throw a party,

e nisso o Rogério e o Daniel, se eu não me engano, chegaram na Joyce e falaram,

and in that, Rogério and Daniel, if I'm not mistaken, arrived at Joyce and said,

cara, por que vocês não chamam o Cauê? O Cauê já tá fazendo todas as nossas fotos aqui,

Dude, why don't you guys call Cauê? Cauê is already taking all our photos here.

e aí foi a época do João Bittar, o João Bittar, o João Bittar, o João Bittar,

and then it was the time of João Bittar, João Bittar, João Bittar, João Bittar,

tava lá também já nessa época, e aí o João Bittar comprou essa ideia, cara,

I was there at that time, and then João Bittar bought into this idea, man.

e foi sensacional, a grana era ridícula, né,

and it was sensational, the money was ridiculous, right,

eu ganhava assim, mil reais por mês pra fazer três fotos por dia,

I used to earn a thousand reais a month to take three photos a day.

assim, era um negócio absurdo, absurdo, mas eu sabia que ali era um começo,

thus, it was an absurd business, absurd, but I knew that there was a beginning there,

e eu continuei fazendo as assistências de dia, então de dia eu continuei trabalhando

And I continued doing the assistance during the day, so during the day I kept working.

com a galera de assistente, e aí de noite eu fazia as festas, era uma loucura.

With the assistant crew, and then at night I threw parties, it was crazy.

Ai que loucura, ai que absurdo!

Cara, eu trabalhava vinte e quatro horas por dia, assim,

foi difícil conciliar isso tudo, tanto é que eu reprovei vinte mil vezes a mesma série

mas aí eu lembro que teve uma coisa muito engraçada que aconteceu lá,

já que eu já fazia bastante retrato nessa época,

since I was already taking a lot of portraits at that time,

e aí começaram a cortar, começaram a cortar todo mundo,

and then they started to cut, they started to cut everyone,

de repente, pum, cortaram todo mundo.

Suddenly, bam, they cut everyone off.

E... hum...

And... um...

Nessa hora eu fui mandado embora, eu fiquei super triste,

I said, wow, man, I loved that there, I loved it.

eu não queria ser mandado embora.

I didn't want to be fired.

Ganhava mil e quinhentos reais por mês nessa época.

E aí o pessoal da publicidade me abraçou, mano, o pessoal da B...

O Zé Belo, ou a B, a Bela, eu comecei a fazer muita coisa lá.

Zé Belo, or B, the Beautiful, I started doing a lot of things there.

Cara, assim, eu fazia, eu fazia o mês e meio,

Dude, like, I would do it, I would do it for a month and a half,

ganhava mil e quinhentos reais pra fazer a redação.

I was earning one thousand five hundred reais to write the essay.

De repente, cara, assim, a publicidade pagava mil e quinhentos na saída.

Suddenly, man, like that, advertising was paying fifteen hundred at the exit.

É, então, pois é, uma coisa...

Uma diferença absurda pro editorial,

que era, na verdade, o jornalismo, aquela coisa de redação,

É, e esse dia eu percebi isso.

E aí nessa época, assim, como eu fazia muita festa,

eu já comecei, eu tinha muito contato com assessoria de imprensa.

E eu sempre fui de fazer muita amizade,

And I have always been someone who makes a lot of friends,

eu nunca sabia o dia de amanhã, né, cara, a gente tem que agregar todo mundo.

E aí eu comecei a fazer trabalho pras assessorias de imprensa.

E aí eu continuei fazendo as festas da Ken,

And then I kept throwing Ken's parties,

mas aí ganhando, acho que a saída era trezentos reais, se eu não me engano,

but winning, I think the exit was three hundred reais, if I'm not mistaken,

era até... não era tão ruim assim.

it was even... it wasn't that bad.

E trabalhava que nem um louco, cara, mas aí caí na vida de freelo.

And I was working like a madman, man, but then I fell into the freelance life.

E aí você entende, assim, porque até então a fotografia pra mim era só

And then you understand why, until then, photography for me was just

dentro da Globo ali, eu ganhava pouco, me matava,

não conseguia comprar câmera, não conseguia comprar nada,

mas podia usar as câmeras deles lá,

as lentes, pelo menos, né, a câmera não tinha nenhuma digital,

mas tinha um monte de lente animal.

Inclusive tenho uma lente comigo até hoje, uma 70-200, que...

que agora eles vão saber que tá comigo,

mas todo mundo sobrou com uma lente ali no final.

Então de certa forma foi meu furo de garantia,

e assim, tudo pago, eu precisava de helicóptero pra fazer alguma coisa,

cara, tava tudo ali, era uma estrutura que hoje não existe

Foi... mudou, né, mudou muito como é consumido esse conteúdo,

ele dá oportunidade pra gente disso, né, então,

você conheceu coisas, assim como eu conheci coisas,

lugares que seriam inacessíveis pra gente,
