Cucumbers

По дороге домой Павлик подумал, как бы ему дома не досталось за то, что он лазит по чужим огородам.

On the way home, Pavlik thought about how he might not get into trouble at home for climbing around other people's gardens.

И он отдал свои огурцы котике.

And he gave his cucumbers to the kitty.

Котик пришел домой радостный.

The kitty came home joyful.

Мама, я тебе огурцов принес.

Mom, I brought you cucumbers.

Мама посмотрела, а у него полные карманы огурцов и за пазухой огурцы лежат, и в руках еще два больших огурца.

Mom looked, and he had pockets full of cucumbers, cucumbers tucked under his shirt, and two big cucumbers in his hands.

Где ты их взял, говорит мама?

"Where did you get them from, mom says?"

На огороде.

In the garden.

На каком огороде?

On which garden?

Там, у реки, на колхозном.

There, by the river, at the collective farm.

Кто ж тебе позволил?

Who allowed you?

Никто, я сам нарвал.

Nobody, I picked it myself.

Значит, украл?

So, you stole it?

Нет, не украл, а так, просто.

Павлик брал, а мне нельзя, что ли? Ну и я взял.

Pavlik took it, so I can't? Well, I took it too.

Котик начал вынимать огурцы из карманов.

The kitten started taking cucumbers out of its pockets.

Постой, постой, не выгружай, говорит мама.

Wait, wait, don't unload, says mom.

Почему?

Why?

Сейчас же неси их обратно.

Now take them back.

Куда же я их понесу? Они на грядке росли, а я сорвал.

Все равно они теперь уже расти не будут.

Ничего, отнесешь и положишь на той же грядке, где сорвал.

Он нам свистел, а мы убежали.

Вот видишь, что делаете?

А если бы он поймал вас?

Он не догнал бы, он уже старенький дедушка.

Ну, как тебе не стыдно, говорит мама.

Ведь дедушка за эти огурцы отвечает.

Мама стала совать огурцы обратно котике в карман.

Мама дала котике в руки два огурца, которые не поместились в карманы, и вывела его за дверь.

Котик повернулся и медленно-медленно пошел по улице.

Вышел котик из деревни и пошел.

The little cat came out of the village and went on.

Он пошел полем.

He walked through the field.

Вокруг не было ни души.

There wasn't a soul around.

От страха он не помнил, как добрался до огорода.

Out of fear, he did not remember how he got to the garden.

Остановился возле шалаша и плачет все громче и громче.

He stopped by the hut and is crying louder and louder.

Сторож услышал и подошел к нему.

The guard heard and approached him.

Ты чего плачешь, спрашивает.

"Why are you crying?" he asks.

Дедушка, я принес огурцы обратно.

Grandpa, I brought the cucumbers back.

Какие огурцы?

What cucumbers?

А которые мы с Павликом нарвали.

And the ones we picked with Pavlik.

Мама сказала, чтобы я отнес обратно.

Mom said to take it back.

Вот оно какое дело, удивился сторож.

Это значит, я вам свистел, а вы все-таки огурцы стащили.

Павлик брал, и я взял.

украл я его или нет?

Котиковый весь дух помчался по полю, через овраг, по мостику, через ручей

The cat spirit rushed across the field, over the ravine, over the little bridge, across the stream.

и уже не спеша пошел по деревне домой.

And he leisurely walked home through the village.

На душе у него было радостно.

He felt joyful in his soul.
