Как видно по фамилии, у Петра Фалленберга немецкие корни.

As can be seen from the surname, Peter Fallenberg has German roots.

В Россию в своё время перебрался его отец.

His father moved to Russia at one point.

Такое происхождение дало нашему герою на старте знание немецкого языка, а также лютеранскую веру.

Such a background gave our hero at the start knowledge of the German language, as well as the Lutheran faith.

Учился он сперва дома, затем школа в Риге и, наконец, Питерский лесной институт.

He first studied at home, then at a school in Riga, and finally at the St. Petersburg Forestry Institute.

Сложно выбрать свой жизненный путь, но у нашего молодого Фалленберга цель была ясная – стать военным.

Сам Фалленберг интригующе пишет.

Fallenberg himself writes intriguingly.

И как праздность мать всех пороков, то и мне суждено было испытать на себе справедливость этой пословицы.

And as idleness is the mother of all vices, I too was fated to experience the truth of this proverb.

Дело сложилось так.

The situation turned out that way.

В июне армия Наполеона вторгается в Россию.

In June, Napoleon's army invades Russia.

Дивизии, пора в поход.

Divisions, it's time to march.

В то время офицеры должны были собирать себя сами, вплоть до покупки лошади.

At that time, officers had to prepare themselves, including buying their own horses.

Но правда, для этого им дополнительно выделили жалование за полгода.

И далее в воспоминаниях следует печальная фраза, которая подводит итог ситуации.

And then in the memoirs follows a sad phrase that sums up the situation.

С стеснённым сердцем и слезами на глазах очнулся я на квартире.

With a heavy heart and tears in my eyes, I woke up in the apartment.

Дела, друзья.

How are things, friends?

У нас тут Наполеон, а ты даже лошадь себе не можешь купить.

We have Napoleon here, and you can't even buy yourself a horse.

Как идти в поход?

How to go hiking?

Пришлось, умирая от стыда, просить генерала дать небольшой отпуск, чтобы съездить к сестре взять денег, ведь к отцу ехать страшно.

I had to, dying of shame, ask the general for a short leave to go to my sister to get some money, since it is frightening to go to my father.

Вы подумайте, ЗП за полгода.

Just think about it, a salary for six months.

Генерал был добрый и понимающий человек.

The general was a kind and understanding person.

Отругал Фалленберга как следует, но по итогу взял с него обещание больше никогда не играть в азартные игры и отпуск позволил.

I scolded Fallenberg thoroughly, but in the end, I got a promise from him to never gamble again and allowed him to take a vacation.

В конце концов Пётр Иванович деньги достал и своих уже в походе догнал.

In the end, Pyotr Ivanovich got the money and caught up with his own during the expedition.
