Сегодня я хочу с вами поиграть в разрушители мифов, и если вам понравится сегодняшний выпуск, то я с большим удовольствием организую все это в какую-то рубрику относительно коротких подкастов про всякие исторически сложившиеся неточности, касающиеся изучения английского, и будем с вами периодически все это дело выпускать.

Today I want to play Myth Busters with you, and if you enjoy today’s episode, I will gladly organize this into a little series of short podcasts about various historically established inaccuracies related to learning English, and we will periodically release it together.

На сегодня я выбрал, не знаю по какому принципу, три мифа, про которые хочу поговорить.

Today I've chosen three myths to talk about, though I'm not sure on what principle I made this selection.

Первый из них обозначил так.

The first of them designated it like this.

Новые слова полезно и просто учить в каких-то смыслах.

It is useful and simple to learn new words in some ways.

Я имею в виду, знаете, всякие таблички школьных учебников под страшными названиями, типа там, предметы в моем классе, и там словали, там, ruler, rubber, desk, pencil case, timetable, возможно, с картинками, и даже, может быть, красочными.

I mean, you know, all those tables in school textbooks with scary titles, like, subjects in my class, and there you find words like ruler, rubber, desk, pencil case, timetable, possibly with pictures, and maybe even colorful ones.

К ним, в общем, к картинкам у меня вопросов на самом деле нет.

I actually have no questions regarding them, in general, about the pictures.

Они в этом разговоре, откровенно говоря, не важны.

They are not important in this conversation, to be honest.

Меня смущает именно вот эта пресловутая группировка.

I am particularly confused by this notorious grouping.

Мы можем к ней подступиться, конечно, как обычно, с каких-то определенных научных статей.

We can approach her, of course, as usual, from some specific scientific articles.

Я вам опять накидаю ссылок на умных лингвистов.

I will throw some links to smart linguists at you again.

Но давайте ради разнообразия поговорим об этом всем сегодня просто вот с житейской стороны.

But let's talk about all of this today just from a practical point of view for a change.

Когда я только начинал преподавать, если у меня были детки, знаете, которые вот только первый-второй класс школы, всегда ближе к весне случался условный диктант по дням недели.

When I first started teaching, if I had little kids, you know, who were just in the first or second grade of school, there would always be a sort of dictation about the days of the week closer to spring.

И у меня не было ни разу такого, чтобы дети не путали Tuesday с Thursday и, например, Wednesday с Friday или Saturday.

And I have never had a situation where the children didn't confuse Tuesday with Thursday and, for example, Wednesday with Friday or Saturday.

Тогда у меня не было достаточного опыта, чтобы эффективно, ну, помочь ребенку.

At that time, I didn't have enough experience to effectively, well, help the child.

Скажем так, не мучиться.

Let's put it this way, don't suffer.

И мы с ним просто, получается, брали эти слова измором, то есть, ну, практикой, по большому счету.

So, it turns out that we were just wearing him down with these words, that is, well, through practice, basically.

И такими уроками я, конечно, не горжусь, но, справедливости ради, я и денег тогда за уроки брал меньше, чем те же школьные учителя, а методу использовал ровно такую же.

And, of course, I am not proud of such lessons, but to be fair, I charged less for the lessons back then than the school teachers did, and I used exactly the same method.

Это ладно, это я оправдываюсь.

Суть.

The essence.

Вот как страшный сон помню.

I remember it like a terrible dream.

Группа Стофана Диктант была, собственно, дни недели с Monday по Sunday, сама week, weekend, day отдельно.

The Stoфан Dictation group was actually the days of the week from Monday to Sunday, the week itself, the weekend, and the day separately.

И там редкий творческий...

And there is a rare creative...

Такие дополнения от учителей.

Such additions from teachers.

У кого-то schedule, у кого-то day of дополнение к weekend, у кого-то даже было the word of the day.

For some, it's a schedule, for others, it's a day of addition to the weekend, and some even had the word of the day.

Там учитель был такой, знаете, творческий, собственно, условно.

There was a teacher there who was, you know, creative, so to speak.

Только из педагогического вуза выпустился, и она хотела ввести на уроки интересную рубрику и писать слова какого-то вот определенного дня на доске каждый урок.

She had just graduated from a pedagogical university, and she wanted to introduce an interesting section in her lessons and write the words of a specific day on the board in each lesson.

Единственное, только в итоге заставило это слово дня в Диктанте писать детей, что я не очень понимаю, честно говоря.

The only thing that ultimately made this word of the day in the Dictation for the children to write is something I don't really understand, to be honest.

Вот.

Here.

В итоге, в силу того, что во всех словах есть вот этот day.

In the end, due to the fact that there is this "day" in all the words.

Его запоминают все вообще без проблем.

Everyone remembers him without any problems at all.

Если еще вовремя ткнуть в то, что это как бы день в переводе, и вообще все эти Monday и Sunday это какие-то там определенные дни,

If you poke into the fact that this is like a day in translation, and in general all these Mondays and Sundays are certain days,

то, в принципе, можно рассчитывать сразу на плюс слова в Диктант вообще на easy.

In principle, you can expect an immediate increase in words in the Dictation, especially on easy.

Ровно так же легко запоминался weekend, потому что дети смотрели и мультики, и киношки типа там Гарфилда и Один дома, и условную какую-нибудь клинику.

Just as easily, they remembered the weekend because the kids watched both cartoons and movies like Garfield and Home Alone, as well as some kind of clinic show.

Короче, weekend был в ходу...

In short, the weekend was in full swing...

Они знали, что это значит выходные.

They knew what that meant: the weekend.

Как-то вот weekend и boyfriend, два слова на моей памяти, которые очень хорошо устаканились в головах детей.

Somehow, the words weekend and boyfriend are two words that have settled very well in the minds of children.

Так вот, собственно, что ты делаешь?

So, what are you actually doing?

Ты им это рассказываешь, потом показываешь им заставку The End от Looney Tunes, которая на самом деле That's All Fox, там, где хрюшка в пиджаке, как его, этот, этот, Porky Pig, вылезает из таких красных кружков, и под ним появляется надпись.

You tell them about it, then show them the Looney Tunes The End screen, which is actually That's All Folks, where the pig in a suit, what's his name, this, this, Porky Pig, pops out of those red circles, and the words appear underneath.

В гугле есть картинки.

Google has images.

Именно где вместо That's All Fox там написано The End.

It's exactly where instead of That's All Fox, it says The End.

Дети-то, в общем-то, не шарят, что там написано по-другому, они на это не обращают внимания, а там про фотошоп им особо ничего не известно в то время.

The kids, in general, don't really get that it's written differently; they don't pay attention to it, and at that time, they don't know much about Photoshop.

Ты просишь их прочитать, что написано на вот этой вот надписи под хрюшкой, вспоминаешь, когда эта надпись в мультике появляется, и, получается, складываешь им в итоге, что есть weekend, где end — это конец.

You ask them to read what is written on this inscription under the pig, remember when this inscription appears in the cartoon, and, in the end, you come up with the conclusion that there is a weekend, where end means the end.

Тогда, собственно, конец чего?

Then, what exactly is the end of?

Недели.

Weeks.

Супер, йоу, человек сам дошел.

Super, yo, the person made it on their own.

До нового слова, и запомнил его после этого намертво.

Until the new word, and he memorized it after that firmly.

Остается только с написанием чуть-чуть поработать, а слово, перевод, смысл, использование — вообще от зубов.

All that's left is to work a little on writing, but the word, translation, meaning, and usage come easily.

Потом, ровно таким же образом, нужно придумывать истории под каждый день недели, чтобы провести какие-то ассоциации ученика, чтобы он также активно проработал каждое слово и в конечном счете запомнил его.

Then, in exactly the same way, one needs to come up with stories for each day of the week to create associations for the student, so they can actively work through each word and ultimately remember it.

К чему я это рассказываю?

Why am I telling this?

Обратите внимание, я специально дергаю слова максимально друг от друга разрозненно.

Please note, I am deliberately pulling the words as far apart as possible.

И пытаюсь их привязывать к вообще разным, не связанным друг с другом историям.

And I try to link them to completely different, unrelated stories.

В итоге получается не прямолинейный вот этот образовательный процесс, который, на самом деле, родители и учителя могут, так скажем, поставить под сомнение и спросить, да на самом деле и спрашивали, почему вообще я ребенку насилую мозг и объясняю выходные через свинью из мультика.

In the end, it turns out to be a non-linear educational process that, in fact, parents and teachers can, so to speak, question and ask—indeed, they have asked—why I am torturing my child's brain and explaining weekends through a pig from a cartoon.

Знаете, так можно себя почувствовать официантом или кальянщиком, который подходит к столу гостей в середине их разговора.

You know, one can feel like a waiter or a hookah man approaching a table of guests in the middle of their conversation.

И слышит истории про какие-то фашистские пытки бобрами там или что-то похлеще.

And hears stories about some fascist tortures with beavers or something worse.

В любом случае, личный опыт плюс ряд исследований, естественно, показывает, что слова, когда они сгруппированы в какую-то тему, а еще страшнее, если они как-то разбавлены синонимы, не запоминаются, а только путаются.

In any case, personal experience plus a number of studies naturally show that words, when grouped around a certain theme, and even worse, if they are mixed with synonyms, are not memorized but rather confused.

Я вначале давал пример слов из темы школьных предметов в классе.

At first, I gave an example of words related to the topic of school subjects in the classroom.

Так вот, я линейку с ластиком, которые жула и жаба, путал, блин, ну пару лет точно.

So, I mixed up the ruler with the eraser, which were a little monster and a frog, damn, for sure a couple of years.

И знаете, такое чувство...

And you know, there's this feeling...

Мерзкое иногда случается, когда оба слова знаешь, но не можешь вспомнить какое-какое.

It’s awful sometimes when you know both words, but can’t remember which is which.

И не к словам это тоже частенько относится, к другим предметам в школе в том числе.

And this often applies to words as well, including other subjects in school.

И вообще не обязательно привязывать это к какому-то школьному обучению.

And in general, it’s not necessary to tie this to any school education.

Это распространенная житейская вещь.

This is a common everyday thing.

Происходит эта путаница из-за того, что у нас в голове есть определенная конкуренция при запоминании смыслов у этих слов.

This confusion arises from the fact that we have a certain competition in our minds when remembering the meanings of these words.

Когда словарный запас условно нулевой, понятное дело, что не нулевой, но недостаточно.

When the vocabulary is conditionally zero, it is clear that it is not zero, but insufficient.

По факту, он работает с самого чистого вида ассоциации.

In fact, he works with the purest form of association.

В, так скажем, начале пути у нас там что луна, что лампа, что голова сыра.

At, so to speak, the beginning of the journey we have there, whether it's the moon, a lamp, or a head of cheese.

Это сначала, ну там, скажем, условный мяч в смысле ball, потому что он круглый.

This is initially, well let's say, a conditional ball in the sense of ball, because it is round.

И по мере поступления вопроса, по мере такой отдельной проработки новых слов,

Всегда нужны истории.

Stories are always needed.

Резюмируем.

Самые крепкие связи мы с вами с новыми словами можем выстроить только в случае того,

The strongest connections we can build with you with new words can only be in the case that,

если они яркие, понятные и однозначные.

Группировка по смысловым группам, ровно так же, как и синонимы,

В перспективе на уже отработанную лексику можно и нужно накручивать синонимы.

In the future, it is possible and necessary to add synonyms to the already developed vocabulary.

Новые слова по теме и все такое.

New words on the topic and all that.

Вот зайдите в ванную, посмотрите там по сторонам.

Go into the bathroom, look around there.

Вы у меня знаете, что есть такая вещь как bathtub, у кого-то там стоит shower,

You know that there is such a thing as a bathtub, and some people have a shower.

что у нас в ваннах есть там sink, mirror, cabinets,

In our bathrooms, we have a sink, mirror, cabinets.

всякие там для мелочевки, которая нужна там для гигиены.

various things for small items that are needed for hygiene.

И вот вы можете все это великолепие окинуть взглядом и обратить внимание,

And now you can take a look at all this magnificence and pay attention,

например, на полотенцесушитель и его уже взять в работу.

For example, take the towel warmer and start working on it.

Он называется по-английски heated towel rail, то есть нагреваемая палка для полотенец.

It is called a heated towel rail in English, which means a heated stick for towels.

И дальше уже можно пойти прям в словарный разнос, подключить все свои извилины

And then you can really go on a vocabulary spree, tapping into all your brain cells.

и путем глубокого анализа прийти к выводу, что если есть нагреваемый heated towel rail,

and through deep analysis come to the conclusion that if there is a heated towel rail,

то должен быть и какой-нибудь просто.

Then there should be just some.

Heated towel rail, то есть обычный полотенцедержатель.

Heated towel rail, that is, a regular towel holder.

И в итоге снова бац, абсолютно случайная какая-то ситуация, случайное слово, но оно у вас запомнится.

And in the end, bam, it's some totally random situation, a random word, but it will stick with you.

Следующий миф, про который я хочу поговорить, звучит так.

The next myth I want to talk about goes like this.

Правила чтения в английском существуют.

There are rules for reading in English.

Да, мы сейчас с вами и про рыбу Бернарда Шоу поговорим, и вообще про все-все-все.

Yes, we will talk about Bernard Shaw's fish, and in general about everything and anything.

Первый момент, который я всем транслирую уже очень давно.

The first point that I have been conveying to everyone for a very long time.

Английские слова, современные английские слова, подчеркну это,

English words, modern English words, I want to emphasize this,

иероглифы, они не состоят из букв.

Hieroglyphs are not made up of letters.

Вернее, ну формально, конечно, каждую букву в английском слове можно отдельно назвать

Это основное отличие вообще языков с иероглифами от языков с буквами.

Аля там в японском языке иероглиф шумный отображается как три иероглифа женщин.

In Japanese, the kanji for "noisy" is represented as three kanji for "woman."

Давайте вернемся к чтению на английском.

Let's get back to reading in English.

Сами англичане шутят, что в их современном языке правил чтения намного меньше, чем исключений.

The English themselves joke that in their modern language there are far fewer reading rules than exceptions.

Одна из самых известных таких юмористических штук вроде как числится за Бернардом Шоу.

One of the most famous such humorous pieces is attributed to Bernard Shaw.

Он когда-то написал рыбу английскую, которая fish, как гхоти,

He once wrote the English word for fish, which is pronounced as "ghoti."

и объяснил, что gh в начале это как в слове enough,

and explained that "gh" at the beginning is like in the word "enough,"

о, которая читается как и в слове, например, women,

o, which is pronounced as in the word, for example, women,

а ш, которая t, как в nation.

and the sh, which is t, like in nation.

Я чуть хочу развить его вот эту юмореску и с вами несколько других примеров привести.

I want to slightly develop this joke of his and provide you with a few other examples.

Нужно развивать.

Then you will hear the sleeper.

Это доказывает то, что когда мы видим английское слово, мы не пытаемся его прочитать.

This proves that when we see an English word, we do not try to read it.

Мы его либо сразу узнаем, либо не узнаем.

We will either recognize him right away or we won't recognize him at all.

В связи с этим у нас...

Сейчас будет еще много подобного рода приколов.

Раз мы про открытые и закрытые слоги заговорили,
