Hello, our dear listeners!

Сегодня вы услышите быль, которую написал Лев Николаевич Толстой.

Today you will hear a tale written by Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy.

Называется она «Филиппок».

It is called "Philippok".

Был мальчик. Звали его Филипп.

There was a boy. His name was Philip.

Пошли раз все ребята в школу.

Once, all the guys went to school.

Филипп взял шапку и тоже хотел идти.

Philipp took his hat and also wanted to go.

Но мать сказала ему, куда ты, Филиппок, собрался?

But mother said to him, where are you going, Philippok?

В школу. Ты еще мал, не ходи.

To school. You're still too young, don't go.

И мать оставила его дома.

And the mother left him at home.

Ребята ушли в школу.

The guys went to school.

Отец еще с утра уехал в лес.

Father left for the forest early in the morning.

Мать ушла на паденную работу.

Mother went to work.

Остались в избе Филиппок да бабушка на печке.

In the hut remained little Philip and the grandmother on the stove.

Стало Филиппку скучно одному.

Philip got bored being alone.

Бабушка заснула, а он стал искать шапку.

Grandma fell asleep, and he started looking for the hat.

Своей не нашел, взял старую отцовскую и пошел в школу.

I couldn't find my own, so I took my father's old one and went to school.

Школа была за селом, у церкви.

The school was behind the village, by the church.

Когда Филиппок шел по своей слободе, собаки не трогали его, они знали его.

When Filippok walked through his neighborhood, the dogs did not bother him; they knew him.

Но когда он вышел к чужим дворам, выскочила жучка, залаяла.

But when he came out to the strangers' yards, a little dog rushed out and started barking.

А за жучкой большая собака-волчок.

And behind the bug, there's a big wolf dog.

Филиппок бросился бежать, собаки за ним.

Filippok ran away, with the dogs after him.

Филиппок стал кричать, споткнулся и упал.

Philippok started to shout, stumbled, and fell.

Вышел мужик, отогнал собак и сказал,

A man came out, drove away the dogs, and said,

куда ты, постреленок, один бежишь?

Where are you running alone, little sparrow?

Филиппок ничего не сказал.

Philipp didn't say anything.

Подобрал полы и пустился бежать во весь дух.

He picked up his clothes and took off running at full speed.

Прибежал он к школе.

He ran to the school.

На крыльце никого нет, а в школе слышно гудяно голоса ребят.

There is nobody on the porch, but the sounds of kids' voices can be heard in the school.

Но Филиппка нашел страх,

But Filipka found fear,

что как учитель меня прогонит?

What, is the teacher going to kick me out?

И стал думать, что ему делать?

And he began to think about what he should do?

Назад идти.

Go back.

Опять собака заест.

The dog will eat again.

В школу идти.

Going to school.

Учителя боится.

The teacher is afraid.

Шла мимо школы баба с ведром и говорит,

A woman was walking past the school with a bucket and said,

все учатся, а ты что здесь стоишь?

Everyone is studying, so what are you doing standing here?

Филиппок и пошел в школу.

Philipp went to school.

В птенцах снял шапку и отворил дверь.

He took off his hat and opened the door in the chicks.

Школа вся была полна ребят.

The school was full of kids.

Все кричали свое, и учитель в красном шарфе ходил посередине.

Everyone was shouting their own, and the teacher in the red scarf walked in the middle.

Ты что?

What are you talking about?

Закричал он на Филиппка.

He shouted at Filippka.

Филиппок ухватился за шапку и ничего не говорил.

Philippok grabbed his hat and said nothing.

Да ты кто?

Who are you?

Филиппок молчал.

Filippok was silent.

Или ты не мой?

Or are you not mine?

Да ты кто?

Who are you?

Филиппок молчал. Или ты не мой?

Philip was silent. Or are you not mine?

Филиппок так напугался, что говорить не мог.

Philipp was so scared that he couldn't speak.

Ну так и иди домой, коль говорить не хочешь.

Well, then go home if you don't want to talk.

А Филиппок рад бы что сказать, да в горле у него от страха пересохло.

But Filipok would like to say something, but his throat has dried up with fear.

Он посмотрел на учителя и заплакал.

He looked at the teacher and cried.

Тогда учителю жалко его стало.

Then the teacher felt sorry for him.

Он погладил его по голове и спросил у ребят, кто этот мальчик.

He stroked his head and asked the guys who that boy was.

О, да это Филиппок, Костюшкин брат.

Oh, that's Filipok, Kostyushkin's brother.

Он давно просится в школу, да мать не пускает его.

He has been asking to go to school for a long time, but his mother won't let him.

А он украдкой пришел в школу.

And he sneakily came to school.

Ну садись на лавку возле брата, а я твою мать попрошу, чтоб пускала тебя в школу.

Well, sit on the bench next to your brother, and I'll ask your mother to let you go to school.

Учитель стал показывать Филиппку буквы.

The teacher began to show Filippka the letters.

А Филиппок их уже знал и немного читать умеет.

And Philip already knew them and could read a little.

Ну-ка сложи свое имя, Филиппок сказал.

"Come on, combine your name," said Philip.

Хве-и-ли-пе-ок.

Hve-i-li-pe-ok.

Пок.

The abbreviation "Пок." in Russian typically refers to "Покой" which can be translated as "Rest" or "Peace." Depending on the context, it could also mean "Departed" as in a deceased person.

Все засмеялись.

Everyone laughed.

Молодец, сказал учитель.

Well done, said the teacher.

Кто тебя учил читать?

Who taught you to read?

Филиппок осмелился и сказал.

Filippok dared to speak.

Костюшка, я бедовый, я сразу все понял, я страсть какой ловкий.

Kostyushka, I'm in trouble, I immediately understood everything, I am quite crafty.

Учитель засмеялся и сказал.

The teacher laughed and said.

Ну погоди хвалиться, а поучись.

Well, don't brag, just learn.

С тех пор Филиппок стал ходить с ребятами в школу.

Since then, Philip has started going to school with the guys.
