Una de las características de la primera carta a los Corintios

One of the characteristics of the first letter to the Corinthians.

o en realidad de las dos cartas que se conservan,

or in fact from the two letters that are preserved,

cartas de Pablo a los Corintios,

letters of Paul to the Corinthians,

es la variedad de temas que Pablo toca.

It is the variety of topics that Pablo addresses.

Evidentemente esta variedad de temas responde a la variedad de preguntas o inquietudes

Evidently, this variety of topics responds to the variety of questions or concerns.

que le presenta la misma comunidad.

that the same community presents to him/her.

Porque Pablo evidentemente está tratando de responder

Because Pablo is clearly trying to respond.

a las inquietudes que le presenta la misma comunidad.

to the concerns presented by the community itself.

A las inquietudes de ellos.

To their concerns.

Entonces, pues ahí tenemos esa variedad.

So, there we have that variety.

Nos encontramos con que Pablo les habla en distintos momentos.

We find that Pablo speaks to them at different times.

Les habla de la Eucaristía, les habla de los carismas,

He speaks to them about the Eucharist, he speaks to them about the charisms,

les habla de la carne inmolada a los ídolos,

he speaks to them about the meat sacrificed to idols,

les habla de problemas de inmoralidad que tienen que superar.

They talk about problems of immorality that they have to overcome.

Y hoy, en el capítulo séptimo de la primera carta,

And today, in the seventh chapter of the first letter,

Pablo les habla sobre una vocación muy especial.

Pablo talks to them about a very special vocation.

Es algo de lo que también nos habló Cristo, por supuesto,

It is something that Christ also spoke to us about, of course.

y que ante todo lo vivió Cristo,

and that above all, Christ lived it,

así como lo vivieron los apóstoles y así como lo vivió Pablo.

just as the apostles experienced it and just as Paul experienced it.

Y es ese llamado particular que algunas personas han sentido,

And it is that particular calling that some people have felt,

el llamado a entregarse a Dios,

the call to surrender to God,

el llamado a servir a Dios sin formar una familia.

the calling to serve God without starting a family.

Es decir, es tan natural que el hombre guste de la mujer,

la ame y quiera formar un hogar.

I loved her and wanted to build a home.

Es tan natural que la mujer sienta ese deseo de ser amada por un hombre

Y tenga hijos.

And have children.

Es algo tan natural que nos puede llamar la atención

que algunas personas, pues parece que miran su vida de otra manera.

That some people seem to see their life in a different way.

El mismo Cristo, pues no tuvo una esposa ni unos hijos.

Christ himself, for he had neither a wife nor children.

Los apóstoles, pues probablemente algunos de ellos habían sido casados,

The apostles, therefore, probably some of them had been married,

como fue el caso del mismo Pedro.

as was the case with Peter himself.

Pero, pues evidentemente,

But, evidently,

cuando ya se entregaron a la labor,

when they had already dedicated themselves to the task,

a la labor del apostolado,

to the work of the apostolate,

pues ya ellos siguieron un camino sin una esposa, sin unos hijos.

Well, they continued on a path without a wife, without children.

Y de esto tenemos plena certeza,

And we have full certainty of this,

porque si hubiera habido hijos de esos apóstoles,

because if there had been children of those apostles,

pues evidentemente esos hijos hubieran tenido un lugar particular,

well evidently those children would have had a particular place,

un lugar singular en la predicación

a unique place in preaching

o en la vida de aquellas comunidades cristianas.

or in the life of those Christian communities.

Y ningún, ningún,

And none, none,

ninguno de los testimonios antiguos,

none of the ancient testimonies,

ninguno de los escritos antiguos nos habla de eso.

None of the ancient writings speak to us about that.

Entonces, ahí es donde se presenta esta situación.

So, that's where this situation arises.

Que por una parte,

On one hand,

es completamente natural y es completamente bello

it is completely natural and it is completely beautiful

que algunas personas o muchas personas

that some people or many people

sientan el llamado de formar un hogar.

feel the call to form a home.

Eso es muy bello.

That is very beautiful.

Pero por otra parte,

But on the other hand,

pues tenemos también la situación de que

well, we also have the situation that

hay personas que tienen un llamado distinto,

There are people who have a different calling,

un distinto.

a different one.

Jesús en un momento dado llama a los varones que tienen ese llamado,

Jesus at a given moment calls the men who have that calling,

los llama eunucos por el reino de los cielos.

he calls them eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.

Y es algo, es algo, algo hermosísimo.

And it is something, it is something, something beautiful.

Entonces uno se pregunta,

Then one wonders,

¿cómo se relacionan estas, estas, estas vocaciones?

How are these, these, these vocations related?

Y nuestra respuesta va a ir en tres pasos.

And our response will be in three steps.

Primero, darnos cuenta que como es Dios el que da las vocaciones,

First, let us realize that it is God who gives the vocations,

pues Dios no tiene que dar las vocaciones,

well, God does not have to give vocations,

sino que Dios tiene que darle la misma vocación a todo el mundo.

but God has to give the same vocation to everyone.

Si bien es perfectamente natural y hermoso,

While it is perfectly natural and beautiful,

ya lo he dicho tres veces,

I have already said it three times,

que algunas personas o muchísimas personas se sientan llamadas

that some people or a lot of people feel called

a tener una esposa, a tener un esposo,

to have a wife, to have a husband

tener un hogar, tener unos hijos,

to have a home, to have children,

eso no significa que Dios le dé esa misma vocación a todo el mundo.

That doesn't mean that God gives that same vocation to everyone.

Eso es lo primero que debemos tener claro.

That is the first thing we must be clear about.

Dios es el que hace el llamado.

God is the one who makes the call.

Y Dios hace el llamado

And God makes the call.

de acuerdo con la vocación de Dios.

according to God's calling.

¿Por qué?

Why?

Con lo que Él mismo le ha dado a cada persona

With what He Himself has given to each person.

y a la vez de acuerdo con ese cuerpo místico que es la iglesia

and at the same time in agreement with that mystical body which is the church

y a la vez de acuerdo con las necesidades del mundo en cada época.

and at the same time in accordance with the needs of the world in each era.

Porque eso es lo maravilloso del llamado.

Because that is the wonderful thing about the calling.

El llamado que Dios da al mismo tiempo tiene que ver

The call that God gives also has to do with

con la persona que lo recibe,

with the person who receives it,

con la comunidad cristiana en que vive

with the Christian community in which he lives

y con el mundo al que va a servir.

and with the world it is going to serve.

Y solamente Dios es el que,

And only God is the one who,

sabe cómo articular todo ello,

knows how to articulate all of this,

a quién llama y cómo llama.

who calls and how they call.

Eso es lo primero.

That's the first thing.

Dios es el Señor.

God is the Lord.

Dios es el que llama.

God is the one who calls.

Segundo,

Second,

démonos cuenta que según la enseñanza de Paulo,

let us realize that according to Paul's teaching,

en sí mismo, es decir, desde un punto de vista objetivo,

in itself, that is, from an objective point of view,

es superior la vocación de aquellas personas

The vocation of those people is superior.

que se entregan a Dios completamente.

who give themselves completely to God.

En sí mismo.

In itself.

Es decir, es superior la vocación de aquella mujer

That is to say, that woman's vocation is superior.

que se entrega a Dios radicalmente,

who surrenders to God radically,

como religiosa, por ejemplo, como virgen consagrada.

as a religious, for example, as a consecrated virgin.

Nosotros tenemos en Colombia

We have in Colombia

vírgenes seglares dominicas,

secular Dominican virgins,

mujeres consagradas completamente al servicio de Dios.

women fully consecrated to the service of God.

Entonces, la gente se entrega.

So, people surrender.

Hay una entrega.

There is a delivery.

Hay una entrega de las personas.

There is a delivery of the people.

Y eso, para la vida de la iglesia,

And that, for the life of the church,

es una señal absolutamente preciosa.

It is an absolutely beautiful sign.

Esa señal preciosa en sí misma

That precious signal in itself

tiene un valor de signo,

it has a sign value,

un valor de llamado,

a call value,

un valor de ejemplo

an example value

que es muy valioso,

that is very valuable,

es tremendamente valioso para toda la iglesia.

It is tremendously valuable for the entire church.

O sea que objetivamente hablando,

That is to say, objectively speaking,

es más perfecto el celibato por el reino de los cielos,

celibacy for the kingdom of heaven is more perfect,

a la manera de Pablo,

in the manner of Pablo,

a la manera de Cristo,

in the manner of Christ,

a la manera de los apóstoles.

in the manner of the apostles.

Pero aquí viene el tercer punto.

But here comes the third point.

Si bien es un estado más perfecto

While it is a more perfect state

el dedicarse completamente a Dios,

devoting oneself completely to God,

eso no es lo definitivo en la eternidad.

that is not the definitive in eternity.

¿Por qué?

Why?

Porque si una persona, por ejemplo,

Because if a person, for example,

toma un camino de perfección,

take a path of perfection,

como es la vida religiosa,

what is religious life like,

pero luego vive en mediocridad,

but then lives in mediocrity,

con egoísmo, con rebeldía,

with selfishness, with rebellion,

con murmuración,

with murmuring,

su llamado era muy perfecto,

his call was very perfect,

pero su manera de vivirlo, pésima.

but his way of living it, terrible.

Entonces, lo definitivo no es

So, what is definitive is not

cuál es la llamada que Dios te hizo.

What is the calling that God made to you?

Lo definitivo es que la respuesta

The definitive thing is that the answer

que tú le das a esa llamada

What do you give to that call?

esté llena de fe,

be filled with faith,

esté llena de esperanza

may it be full of hope

y sobre todo esté llena de caridad.

and above all be filled with charity.

Si bien es verdad que es más perfecto

While it is true that it is more perfect

ser célibe por el reino de los cielos,

to be celibate for the sake of the kingdom of heaven,

vamos a ver cómo vas a vivir tú ese celibato.

Let's see how you are going to live that celibacy.

Si lo vas a vivir en plenitud de amor

If you are going to live it in fullness of love.

o si lo vas a vivir en medio de egoísmo,

or if you're going to live it amidst selfishness,

de oportunismo, de mentira,

of opportunism, of lies,

de doble vida, de hipocresía.

of double life, of hypocrisy.

Entonces son los tres elementos.

So those are the three elements.

Primero, que Dios es el dueño de todas las vocaciones

First, that God is the owner of all vocations.

y que sólo Él sabe dar una vocación

and that only He knows how to give a vocation

que al mismo tiempo responde a lo que tú eres,

that at the same time responds to what you are,

a lo que viviste,

to what you lived

vives en tu comunidad cristiana

you live in your Christian community

y a lo que necesita el mundo.

and to what the world needs.

Segundo, que objetivamente hablando

Second, that objectively speaking

es más perfecto el estado de consagración a Él

the state of consecration to Him is more perfect

con todo nuestro ser, con todo nuestro cuerpo.

with all our being, with all our body.

Nadie duda de eso.

No one doubts that.

Pero tercero, que lo definitivo

But third, that the definitive

no es si tu estado de vida es más perfecto.

It is not if your state of life is more perfect.

Lo que es más importante es

What is most important is

cómo respondes tú

how do you respond?

desde la fe, la esperanza y la caridad

from faith, hope, and charity

al llamado que Dios te hizo.

to the call that God made to you.

Y por eso no es de extrañarse

And that's why it's not surprising.

que haya laicos casados con hijos

that there are lay people who are married with children

y ya han llevado

and they have already taken

y tal vez están llevando una vida de enorme perfección

and maybe they are leading a life of enormous perfection

que puede superar a muchos de nosotros

that can surpass many of us

religiosos o sacerdotes.

religious or priests.

Lo definitivo está en la respuesta, repito,

The definitive thing is in the answer, I repeat,

de fe, esperanza y amor

of faith, hope, and love

que tú le des al Señor.

that you give to the Lord.
