And we notice something very interesting there in Luke 2.
La primera persona que Lucas menciona aquí en este lugar,
The first person that Lucas mentions here in this place,
si se dan cuenta, no es María, no es José,
if you notice, it's not María, it's not José,
no es el ángel, no es ni siquiera el Señor Jesucristo.
It is not the angel, it is not even the Lord Jesus Christ.

Who is the first person mentioned?
Augusto.
Augustus.
¿Y saben qué?
And you know what?
Ni siquiera es su verdadero nombre.
It's not even his real name.
Era un título que le habían dado.
It was a title they had given him.
Su nombre verdadero era Caio Octavio,
His real name was Gaius Octavius.
nacido en Italia en el año 63 antes de Cristo.

In fact, he was related to Julio.

whom they called the Caesar.

The same happens with Pharaoh.

Pharaoh was a title, it's like saying Pharaoh of Egypt.

the king of Egypt.
Cándase de Etiopía.
Candidacy from Ethiopia.
Cándase es otro título, no es el nombre de la reina.
Cándase is another title, it is not the name of the queen.
Es el título.
It is the title.
Entonces, en este caso, César era el título que se le da al emperador.
So, in this case, César was the title given to the emperor.
Y a este hombre le cambiaron el nombre porque Augusto tiene un significado
And this man was given a new name because Augusto has a meaning.
muy importante entre la usanza del nombramiento de los Césares.
very important among the custom of the appointment of the Caesars.
De hecho, estaba relacionado con Julio César.
In fact, he was related to Julius Caesar.
Era su tío, abuelo, por parte de su mamá.
He was her uncle, grandfather, on her mother's side.
Y Julio fue asesinado en el año 44 antes de Cristo.
And Julius was murdered in the year 44 BC.
Y por asombro de muchos, después de este asesinato,
And to the amazement of many, after this murder,
cuando se leyó el testamento,
when the will was read,
Caio Octavio fue el único reconocido en el testamento como el heredero universal.
Caio Octavio was the only one recognized in the will as the universal heir.

So at the age of 19, Caio Octavio became the emperor of the Romans.
El César romano.
The Roman Caesar.

They proclaimed him Caesar.

That evoked a sense of reverential awe.

Authority.
Un control sin restricciones sobre todos los asuntos del imperio.
Unrestricted control over all matters of the empire.
Quizás no lo sepan, pero consideraban a este tipo de personajes, a estos res Césares,
Perhaps you don't know it, but they considered these types of characters, these Césares.
los consideraban deidad.
They were considered deities.
Eran dioses con D minúscula.
They were gods with a lowercase d.
Pero Dios al final de cuentas.
But God in the end.
Lo cual resultaba problemático cuando los cristianos adoraban al Dios verdadero.
Which was problematic when Christians worshiped the true God.
Y eso condujo a la persecución de muchos de esos cristianos porque estaban siendo de alguna u otra manera infieles.
And that led to the persecution of many of those Christians because they were being unfaithful in one way or another.

They were not worshipping the God that the Romans worshipped, which was Caesar.

The King of kings.

Going down to Egypt and returning through northern Africa, all the way to Spain.
Esa era la Roma que el imperio en ese tiempo daba a conocer.
That was the Rome that the empire was revealing at that time.
Una extensión de tierra masiva.
A massive expanse of land.
A los ojos de los que vivían en el imperio de Roma, el imperio romano,
In the eyes of those who lived in the empire of Rome, the Roman Empire,
Roma controlaba todo el mundo civilizado.
Rome controlled the entire civilized world.
Por lo tanto, un César era el Dios del mundo.
Therefore, a Caesar was the God of the world.
Era el Dios por excelencia.
He was the God par excellence.
Toda esta situación política afectó a personas humildes y campesinas como José, como María,
This entire political situation affected humble people and peasants like José and María.
porque de una u otra manera, de manera indirecta, el que era importante aquí era el emperador.
Because one way or another, indirectly, the one who was important here was the emperor.
Era el César, Augusto.
It was Caesar, Augustus.

Porque a la hora de enlistarlos para las fuerzas armadas,

He was the man, the one who was chosen and sent to war.

And may the whole empire know who the boss was, who was in charge there.

Who ruled the world?
Y que no hubiera dudas de que él era esa persona.
And there was no doubt that he was that person.
En tercer lugar, la función más importante del censo era la tributación.
Thirdly, the most important function of the census was taxation.
Pagar tributo.
Pay tribute.
El pago de impuestos.
The payment of taxes.
De ahí viene la palabra en español, impuesto.

It wasn't voluntary, it was imposed.
