continuando un poquito con la nota de la santidad que habíamos hablado la semana pasada

continuing a little bit with the note on holiness that we talked about last week

y esta vez vamos a hablar de otro tema relacionado y es nuestra vida de pecado.

And this time we are going to talk about another related topic, which is our life of sin.

Hablábamos que estamos llamados a ser santos, pero aún así vivimos en pecado.

We talked about how we are called to be holy, but still we live in sin.

Vivimos acechados por las tentaciones y muchas veces caemos

We live stalked by temptations and many times we fall.

Les voy a leer un pasaje del Evangelio de San Lucas

I am going to read you a passage from the Gospel of Saint Luke.

que tal vez nos venga a dar una luz acerca de la reacción de Dios, de ese Dios bueno y amoroso

that perhaps it will come to enlighten us about God's reaction, that good and loving God

hacia nosotros, los pecadores.

toward us, the sinners.

Entró en Jericó y cruzaba la ciudad.

He entered Jericho and was passing through the city.

Había un hombre llamado Saqueo, que era jefe de publicanos y rico.

There was a man named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and rich.

Trataba de ver quién era Jesús, pero no podía a causa de la gente, porque era de pequeña estatura.

He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature.

Se adelantó corriendo y se subió a un psicómoro para verle, pues iba a pasar por allí.

He ran ahead and climbed a sycamore to see him, as he was going to pass by there.

Y cuando Jesús llegó a aquel sitio, alzando la vista le dijo,

And when Jesus arrived at that place, lifting his eyes he said to him,

Saqueo, baja pronto, porque conviene que hoy me quede yo en tu casa.

Saqueo, come down soon, because it's best for me to stay at your house today.

Se apresuró a bajar.

He hurried down.

Y lo recibió con alegría.

And he received him with joy.

Al verlo, todos murmuraban, diciendo,

Upon seeing him, everyone murmured, saying,

Ha ido a hospedarse a casa de un hombre pecador.

He has gone to stay at the house of a sinful man.

Saqueo, puesto en pie, dijo al Señor,

Saqueo, stood up, said to the Lord,

Daré, Señor, la mitad de mis bienes a los pobres, y si en algo defraudé a alguien, le devolveré cuatro veces más.

I will give, Lord, half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone in anything, I will pay back four times as much.

Jesús le dijo, Hoy ha llegado la salvación a esta casa, porque también éste es hijo de Abraham,

Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham."

pues el Hijo del Hombre ha venido a buscar y salvar lo que estaba perdido.

For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Dice, hermanos, lo que está perdido está perdido.

It says, brothers, what is lost is lost.

El que les acabo de leer no es palabra mía, es palabra de Dios.

What I just read to you is not my word, it is the word of God.

Veamos de nuevo este pasaje que acabamos de leer.

Pues entra Jesús a esta ciudad, o este pueblo de Jericó,

y Saqueo nos dice el evangelio que era jefe de publicanos y era rico.

And the Gospel tells us that Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector and he was rich.

Los publicanos en ese entonces eran gentes que cobraban los impuestos,

The tax collectors at that time were people who collected taxes,

pero no como lo cobran ahora los impuestos los gobiernos,

but not like the governments collect taxes now,

sino que los publicanos eran encargados de ir, cobrar el impuesto de Roma, de la capital del imperio,

but the tax collectors were responsible for going to collect the tax for Rome, the capital of the empire,

y además ellos para tener ganancia, cobraban un poquito de más.

And also, to make a profit, they charged a little extra.

Ese poquito de más a veces era muchito de más.

That little bit more was sometimes a lot more.

A veces se les pasaba mucho la mano y eran considerados unos traidores,

Sometimes they went too far and were considered traitors,

porque muchos de ellos eran judíos que le estaban cobrando a su propio pueblo más de lo que debían.

because many of them were Jews who were charging their own people more than they should have.

Más de lo que el César pedía para ganar ellos.

More than what Caesar was asking for to win them.

Dice el evangelio que Saqueo era publicano, no solo publicano, era jefe de publicanos y rico.

The gospel says that Zacchaeus was a tax collector, not just a tax collector, he was the chief tax collector and wealthy.

And he tells us,

Y nos lo describe Lucas, no solo como pecador, como rico, sino que nos lo describe también de pequeña estatura.

And Luke describes him not only as a sinner, as rich, but also describes him as short in stature.

Pero era alguien que quería, que trataba de ver a Jesús.

But it was someone who wanted to see Jesus.

Él no podía verlo a causa de la gente que lo rodeaba.

He couldn't see him because of the people surrounding him.

Muchas veces, nosotros en nuestras vidas nos parecemos mucho a Saqueo.

Many times, we in our lives resemble Zacchaeus a lot.

Estamos metidos entre la gente.

We are among the people.

Entre toda esta masa de gente que nos dice,

Among all this crowd of people that tells us,

Usted es un inútil, usted es un pecador.

You are useless, you are a sinner.

Usted es una persona despreciable.

You are a despicable person.

Porque tal vez en nuestra vida hemos fallado, y fallado mucho.

Because maybe we have failed in our lives, and failed a lot.

Y en este momento estamos tratando,

And right now we are trying,

Y en este momento estamos tratando de ver a Jesús.

And at this moment, we are trying to see Jesus.

Pero nos parece tan difícil verlo.

But it seems so difficult for us to see it.

Porque estamos metidos en la huya de la gente.

Because we are caught up in people's flight.

Estamos metidos entre los insultos de la sociedad.

We are caught up in the insults of society.

La sociedad que dice, ese joven ya no sale de la droga.

The society that says, that young man will never get out of drugs.

Ese joven no va a salir del alcoholismo.

That young man is not going to overcome alcoholism.

Ese papá y esa mamá que se agreden, que agreden a sus hijos.

That dad and that mom who abuse each other, who abuse their children.

Ellos no van a salir nunca.

They are never going to leave.

Somos pequeños entre la sociedad.

We are small within society.

La gente a veces llega a ser más grande que nosotros.

People sometimes become greater than us.

Somos como Saqueo.

We are like Saqueo.

Todos pequeñitos, metidos entre este tumulto.

All little ones, caught up in this turmoil.

Tratando de ver a Jesús.

Trying to see Jesus.

Implorándole a Dios, Señor, pero dame una luz, déjame ver el camino.

I am imploring God, Lord, but give me a light, let me see the way.

Saqueo era ese hombre pequeño.

Saqueo was that little man.

Saqueo somos nosotros.

We are the looting.

Los pequeños en la sociedad.

The little ones in society.

Que abrumados por el peso de los pecados.

That overwhelmed by the weight of sins.

Cuando tratamos de ver a Jesús no podemos.

When we try to see Jesus, we can't.

Porque el peso de nuestros pecados es tan grande.

Because the weight of our sins is so great.

Queremos ser santos, pero que duro es subirnos.

We want to be saints, but it's hard to lift ourselves up.

Por encima de la gente.

Above the people.

Sobrepasar lo que diga la gente.

Overcome what people say.

Y nos persiguen esos pecados, nos persiguen.

And those sins chase us, they chase us.

Y nos van hundiendo más.

And they are sinking us more.

¿Para qué voy a salir yo de la droga?

Why would I get off drugs?

¿Para qué voy a salir yo del alcoholismo?

Why should I stop drinking?

¿Por qué voy a hacerlo?

Why am I going to do it?

Si todos me dicen, usted es ese publicano, usted es un pecador.

If everyone tells me, you are that tax collector, you are a sinner.

Usted es el que traicionó a su pueblo.

You are the one who betrayed your people.

Usted es un traidor.

You are a traitor.

Esas voces, hermanos.

Those voices, brothers.

Esas voces son las que nos hunden más en la depresión, en la angustia.

Those voices are what sink us deeper into depression, into anguish.

En las mismas drogas y en el mismo alcoholismo de siempre.

In the same drugs and the same alcoholism as always.

Y tratamos de ver a Jesús, pero no podemos ser más que todas esas voces.

And we try to see Jesus, but we cannot be more than all those voices.

Porque somos tan inútiles.

Why are we so useless?

Pero es que si se pone a verle a ustedes de esa manera.

But if he's going to look at you that way.

Nosotros somos tan pequeños.

We are so small.

El pecado es más que nosotros.

Sin is more than us.

La gente, lo que van a decir las personas.

The people, what the people are going to say.

Ellos son más poderosos que nosotros.

They are more powerful than us.

Pero cuenta también el evangelio.

But the gospel also counts.

Que saqueo se adelantó corriendo.

That looting rushed ahead running.

Y se subió a un psicómoro para verle.

And he climbed a sycamore to see him.

Pues iba a pasar por allí.

Well, I was going to pass by there.

Ahora imaginen ustedes a ese saqueo, a ese publicano que todos están criticando.

Now imagine that plunder, that tax collector that everyone is criticizing.

Porque él trata de ver a Jesús, pero es un pecador.

Because he tries to see Jesus, but he is a sinner.

Él no tiene el derecho ni siquiera de verlo.

He doesn't even have the right to see him.

Pero dice la Biblia, se adelanta corriendo.

But the Bible says, he runs ahead.

Se adelanta corriendo.

He/she runs ahead.

Él no va caminando a paso lento.

He is not walking at a slow pace.

Él va corriendo.

He is running.

La actitud de un cristiano.

The attitude of a Christian.

Vean que curioso que ese es un pecador grande.

Look how curious that this is a great sinner.

Pero su deseo de ver a Jesús.

But your desire to see Jesus.

Su deseo de llegar a seguir a Jesús es tan grande.

His desire to follow Jesus is so great.

Que él se va corriendo.

That he is running away.

A él no le importa lo que diga la gente.

He doesn't care what people say.

Él se va corriendo rápido.

He is running away fast.

A paso firme.

With steady steps.

Rápido porque Jesús va a pasar.

Quickly, because Jesus is going to pass by.

Y ese pequeñín, ese saqueo pequeño.

And that little one, that small looting.

Se sube a este árbol grande.

He climbs up this big tree.

A un psicómoro.

To a psychomorph.

Que era no solo un árbol grande.

It was not just a big tree.

Sino que es una especie de higuera que crecía en esos lugares.

But it is a kind of fig tree that grew in those places.

Y su fruto servía para darle de comer a los cerdos.

And its fruit was used to feed the pigs.

No solo era un árbol grande.

It was not just a big tree.

Sino que su fruto era considerado impuro.

But its fruit was considered impure.

Porque era tirado a los cerdos.

Because it was thrown to the pigs.

También vemos un paralelismo entre ese árbol.

We also see a parallelism between that tree.

Y hacia donde se dirigía Jesús.

And where was Jesus headed?

Jesús se dirigía a Jerusalén.

Jesus was heading to Jerusalem.

A subirse al árbol de la cruz.

To climb up the tree of the cross.

Una cruz que para todos.

A cross that is for everyone.

Era señal de impureza.

It was a sign of impurity.

Era una señal.

It was a sign.

Que daba el imperio romano.

What the Roman Empire gave.

Y decía.

And he/she said.

Esos son los ladrones.

Those are the thieves.

Esos son los que insultaron al pueblo romano.

Those are the ones who insulted the Roman people.

Y por eso están allá subidos.

And that's why they are up there.

La cruz era el árbol de la vergüenza.

The cross was the tree of shame.

Saqueo.

Looting.

No le importa.

He/She doesn't care.

A saqueo no le importa lo que esté diciendo la gente.

A looter does not care what people are saying.

Él corre.

He runs.

Se va rápido.

It goes quickly.

Y se sube al árbol.

And he climbs the tree.

No importa que sea impuro.

It doesn't matter that it is impure.

Pero era un árbol desde donde podía ver a Jesús.

But it was a tree from where I could see Jesus.

Era a cara.

It was face down.

Esa actitud de saqueo.

That looting attitude.

Es la que debemos imitar nosotros en nuestra vida.

It is the one we should imitate in our lives.

Cuando todos los demás.

When everyone else.

Nos están criticando por la vida que llevábamos.

They are criticizing us for the life we were living.

Cuando los pecados que tenías.

When the sins you had.

Se están haciendo pesados y te persiguen.

They are becoming annoying and are chasing you.

Y te siguen.

And they follow you.

Y la gente no cree que.

And people don't believe that.

Que haya posibilidad de un cambio.

That there is a possibility of a change.

Cuando dicen.

When they say.

Ese no sale de ahí.

That one doesn't leave there.

Adelántate corriendo.

Run ahead.

Hay que adelantarse a la gente.

You have to get ahead of the people.

Hay que adelantarse.

We need to get ahead.

A subirse en la cruz.

To get on the cross.

A subirse en la cruz para poder ver a Jesús.

To climb up on the cross to be able to see Jesus.

Cara a cara.

Face to face.

La cruz.

The cross.

Es simplemente un símbolo de humillación.

It is simply a symbol of humiliation.

Un símbolo.

A symbol.

De reconocimiento.

Of recognition.

Para nosotros.

For us.

De nuestros pecados.

Of our sins.

Jesús cargó con la cruz que es.

Jesus bore the cross that is.

Nuestro pecado.

Our sin.

Y se clavó ahí.

And it got stuck there.

Sus llagas son la muestra.

His wounds are the evidence.

De que en realidad.

That in reality.

Nuestros pecados.

Our sins.

Fueron crucificados ahí también con Jesús.

They were crucified there with Jesus.

Y que hermoso es que.

And how beautiful it is that.

Jesús nos haya dejado también una opción de reivindicarnos.

Jesus has also left us an option to redeem ourselves.

En el sacramento de la confesión.

In the sacrament of confession.

Que hermoso es.

How beautiful it is.

Que nosotros podamos ir ahí.

That we can go there.

A humillarnos.

To humiliate us.

Cierto ante un sacerdote que es un hombre como nosotros.

True before a priest who is a man like us.

Pero es un símbolo de humillación para poder estar cara a cara con Jesús.

But it is a symbol of humiliation to be able to stand face to face with Jesus.

Cara a cara con ese Jesús.

Face to face with that Jesus.

Que en la última cena nos cuenta Juan.

What John tells us at the Last Supper.

Que se tiró al suelo a lavarle los pies a sus discípulos.

He threw himself to the ground to wash his disciples' feet.

Para lavarle los pies a alguien.

To wash someone's feet.

Tienes que estar más abajo que ellos.

You have to be lower than them.

Usualmente.

Usually.

Vemos la representación.

We see the representation.

Si ustedes van a una misa de jueves santo.

If you go to a Holy Thursday mass.

Van a ver como el sacerdote tiene que inclinarse.

You will see how the priest has to bow.

Pero Jesús.

But Jesus.

Nos ve a nosotros.

He sees us.

Como huyó a Saqueo.

How he fled to Zacchaeus.

Humillándose.

Humiliating himself.

Sin importarle lo que dijera la gente.

Not caring what people said.

Subido ahí.

Uploaded there.

En el árbol.

In the tree.

Y le dice.

And he/she says to him/her.

Saqueo.

Looting.

Baja pronto.

Get down soon.

Porque te conviene que hoy me quede yo en tu casa.

Because it's in your best interest for me to stay at your house today.

Ese es Jesús que nos habla a nosotros.

That is Jesus speaking to us.

Y nos dice.

And he/she tells us.

Ya que te humillaste.

Since you humbled yourself.

Ya que no te importó lo que dije a la gente.

Since you didn't care about what I said to the people.

Lo único que te importaba era verme.

The only thing that mattered to you was seeing me.

Jesús dice.

Jesus says.

Baja pronto.

Get well soon.

Que yo hoy me voy a quedar en tu casa.

That today I am going to stay at your house.

Baja pronto.

Come down soon.

Que yo hoy voy a hacerte compañía a ti.

Today I am going to keep you company.

Y a tu familia.

And to your family.

Y a todos los que viven en tu casa.

And to all those who live in your house.

Ese es el gran milagro de Jesús.

That is the great miracle of Jesus.

Dice la Biblia que era un publicano.

The Bible says that he was a tax collector.

Y era un hombre pequeño.

And he was a small man.

¿Cuántos de nosotros somos los traidores?

How many of us are the traitors?

Los hombres y mujeres pequeños.

The small men and women.

Pequeñas.

Small.

Que no logramos sobreponernos al pecado.

That we could not overcome sin.

Que seguimos hundiéndonos en el pecado.

That we continue sinking into sin.

Pero si nos adelantamos a la multitud.

But if we get ahead of the crowd.

Si nos adelantamos a la gente.

If we get ahead of the people.

Sin importar lo que vayan a decir.

No matter what they are going to say.

Nos subimos a un árbol grande.

We climbed a big tree.

A un árbol aunque sea humillante para nosotros.

To a tree, even if it is humiliating for us.

Un árbol que representa nuestra humillación.

A tree that represents our humiliation.

Nuestro morir al pecado.

Our dying to sin.

Jesús nos vuelve a ver y nos dice.

Jesus looks at us again and says to us.

Baja.

Lower.

Que yo hoy me quedo contigo.

That today I will stay with you.

Baja que ahora si yo me voy a quedar contigo.

Come down because now I really am going to stay with you.

Sigue diciendo el evangelio.

Keep preaching the gospel.

Que la gente.

That the people.

Como siempre la gente verdad.

As always, the people, right?

Murmuraba diciendo.

He was murmuring, saying.

Ha ido a hospedarse a casa de un hombre pecador.

He has gone to stay at the house of a sinful man.

La gente va a murmurar.

People are going to gossip.

Siempre.

Always.

Porque te reconocen como un pecador.

Because they recognize you as a sinner.

Y no creen que eres un pecado.

And don't you think you are a sin?

Y no creen que Jesús se vaya a hospedar en tu casa.

And don't you think that Jesus is going to stay at your house?

Pero Saqueo.

But Zacchaeus.

Tiene una respuesta.

It has an answer.

Que los deja callados.

That leaves them speechless.

Saqueo puesto en pie dijo al Señor.

Looting has been set upright, said to the Lord.

Daré Señor la mitad de mis bienes a los pobres.

I will give, Lord, half of my goods to the poor.

Y si en algo defraude a alguien.

And if I let someone down in any way.

Le devolveré cuatro veces más.

I will return four times more.

No sólo Saqueo se humilló.

Not only did Zacchaeus humble himself.

Ante los demás.

In front of others.

No sólo dejó que los demás hablaran de él.

He not only let others talk about him.

Sino.

Otherwise.

Que además ahora.

That besides now.

Él está reparando parte del daño que hizo.

He is repairing part of the damage he caused.

Tal vez no pueda reparar el daño psicológico.

Perhaps I can't repair the psychological damage.

El daño moral que le hizo a la gente.

The moral damage it caused to the people.

Pero en lo que puede.

But in what it can.

Él trata de reparar ese daño.

He tries to repair that damage.

Un relato.

A story.

Casi que de una confesión.

Almost like a confession.

Cuando uno va al sacramento de la penitencia.

When one goes to the sacrament of penance.

Uno va a humillarse.

In front of the priest.

Que representa a Jesucristo.

To stand in front of everyone and say I am a sinner.

Que todos me señalen y me critiquen.

Let everyone point at me and criticize me.

Que todos murmuren.

Let them all murmur.

Pero ahí mismo Saqueo dice.

But right there, Zacchaeus says.

Se puso en pie.

He/She stood up.

Puesto en pie.

Standing up.

Dijo al Señor.

He said to the Lord.

Nosotros ahí mismo.

We right there.

En la confesión.

In the confession.

Espiritualmente nos estamos poniendo en pie.

Spiritually we are rising up.

Puestos en pie.

Standing.

Le decimos al Señor.

We tell the Lord.

Yo soy un pecador.

I am a sinner.

Pero.

But.

En recompensa.

In reward.

Yo voy.

I am going.

A cumplir con mi penitencia.

To fulfill my penance.

Yo voy a reparar ese daño.

I am going to repair that damage.

A como pueda.

As best as I can.

Y Jesús.

And Jesus.

Le responde.

He/She responds to him/her.

Hoy.

Today.

Ha llegado la salvación.

Salvation has arrived.

A esta casa.

To this house.

Porque también éste es hijo de Abraham.

Because he is also a son of Abraham.

Hoy ha llegado la salvación a esta casa.

Today salvation has come to this house.

No le dices sólo a Saqueo.

You don't just tell Zacchaeus.

Sino a esta casa.

But to this house.

Si tú me estás escuchando.

If you are listening to me.

Y tienes algún problema.

And do you have any problem?

Algún pecado que está.

Some sin that is.

Sobre tus capacidades humanas.

About your human capabilities.

Corre delante de la multitud.

Run in front of the crowd.

Corre.

Run.

Adelántate.

Go ahead.

Hay que adelantarse a hacer el bien, porque si nos sentamos en la casa a hundirnos más en lo que pasó y a pensar de nuevo, yo soy un pecador, yo hice esto, yo hice lo otro, yo no soy digno, eso no va a arreglar nada.

We must take the initiative to do good, because if we sit at home sinking deeper into what happened and thinking again, I am a sinner, I did this, I did that, I am not worthy, that will not fix anything.

Pero en cambio si nos adelantamos, si subimos, siendo los más pequeños, si nos subimos a ese árbol, si nos humillamos ante los demás, y humillación me refiero a humildad, a ser humildes, a ser siervos de todos, servidores de todos, nos adelantamos entonces a la multitud y como saqueo déjelos que murmuren, déjelos que rumoren, déjelos que hablen, la gente siempre habla, siempre, siempre.

But instead, if we move ahead, if we rise, being the smallest, if we climb that tree, if we humble ourselves before others, and by humiliation I mean humility, to be humble, to be servants of all, we then move ahead of the crowd and like Zacchaeus, let them murmur, let them gossip, let them talk, people always talk, always, always.

Pero cumple con tu misión de reparar el daño entregando tu vida a Jesucristo, y Jesucristo se refleja en los pobres, en aquellas personas que no entienden todavía lo que Dios les está diciendo, en aquella persona que está sufriendo, ahí está Jesucristo, entregale la vida a Jesucristo, entregale la vida a los pobres, a los más necesitados, entregale la vida a esas personas en tu oficina.
