Quemarlo todo (2 Pedro 3:8-15)

Que la luz de Dios ilumine sus caminos, mis hermanos, para que así ustedes también puedan darle luz a otros y a otras.

May the light of God illuminate your paths, my brothers, so that you too may bring light to others.

La primera reacción que produce el texto de hoy cuando escuchamos a Pedro, el autor de la carta,

The first reaction that today's text produces when we hear from Peter, the author of the letter,

hablar de que habrá un cataclismo casi de cualidades nucleares en el universo, es miedo.

Talking about a cataclysm almost of nuclear qualities in the universe is fear.

Mire, cuando yo era más joven leía estos textos de la Biblia y me asustaba y se me hacía muy difícil comprender

Look, when I was younger I read these texts from the Bible and they scared me and I found them very difficult to understand.

por qué habiendo un Dios tan bueno, un Dios creador de tantas cosas hermosas, al final destruiría todo lo que había hecho y había creado.

Why, with such a good God, a God who created so many beautiful things, would He end up destroying everything He had made and created?

Se me hacía difícil en mi juventud o en mi adolescencia comprender este mensaje como otros tantos mensajes apocalípticos de la Biblia.

It was difficult for me in my youth or adolescence to understand this message like many other apocalyptic messages in the Bible.

Como un mensaje que fuese cónsono con la buena nueva de Jesucristo.

Like a message that was in harmony with the good news of Jesus Christ.

¿Qué tiene de buena noticia escuchar lo que parece ser una profecía donde el mundo va a ser totalmente consumido y destruido en una calamidad?

What good news is there in hearing what seems to be a prophecy where the world will be completely consumed and destroyed in a calamity?

¿A quién no le preocupa escuchar estas palabras?

Who wouldn't worry about hearing these words?

Nada más con lo que hemos escuchado en las noticias del país recientemente suficiente

Nothing more than what we have heard in the news about the country recently is enough.

para que el mundo pueda ser totalmente consumido y destruido en una calamidad.

so that the world can be totally consumed and destroyed in a calamity.

Y aquí encima, hoy en la palabra del Señor, escuchemos que todo lo que ha quedado también será destruido.

And here on top, today in the word of the Lord, let us hear that everything that remains will also be destroyed.

Pero el día del Señor vendrá como ladrón en el cual los cielos pasarán con un gran estruendo

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise.

y los elementos serán destruidos con fuego intenso

y la tierra y las obras que hay en la tierra serán quemadas.

And the earth and the works that are in the earth will be burned.

Siendo yo hijo de un bombero, y como sabrán en mi casa me dieron el curso intensivo acerca del fuego,

cómo evitarlo y si sucedía cómo apagarlo,

how to avoid it and if it happens how to turn it off,

también me enseñaron muy bien desde pequeño cuál era el poder que tenía el fuego

They also taught me very well from a young age what power fire had.

para poder hacer cenizas.

in order to make ashes.

Todo lo que encontraba a su paso.

Everything she found in her path.

Todos nosotros hemos tenido alguna experiencia con el fuego.

We have all had some experience with fire.

Ronnie ahorita tuvo una experiencia con el fuego y la vela de adviente.

Ronnie just had an experience with fire and the Advent candle.

Espero que no lo traumatice para siempre.

I hope it doesn't traumatize him forever.

A veces el fuego es bueno.

Sometimes fire is good.

Pero cuando lo usamos para cocinar, los barbequeos, las fiestas, ese fuego es bueno.

But when we use it for cooking, barbecues, parties, that fire is good.

Ese fuego anticipa que habrá algo.

That fire heralds that there will be something.

Es positivo al final.

It's positive in the end.

O como cuando tenemos frío y se utiliza el fuego o el calor para calentarnos.

Or like when we are cold and we use fire or heat to warm ourselves up.

Pero también el fuego se utiliza para destruir aquello que queremos quemar.

But fire is also used to destroy what we want to burn.

Como los van los recuerdos.

How memories fade away.

Hay quienes han quemado álbumes de fotos donde estaba el ex y la ex los quemaron.

There are those who have burned photo albums where their ex was, and the ex burned them.

De ese modo aliviarse posiblemente de todos los recuerdos que amarraban.

In that way, possibly free themselves from all the memories that bound them.

A esa vida una con la otra.

To that life one with the other.

Así que el fuego tiene distintas versiones de lo que podría ser.

So fire has different versions of what it could be.

Y distintos efectos sobre nuestras vidas.

And different effects on our lives.

Y cada uno de nosotros, si yo le paso el micrófono,

And each one of us, if I pass the microphone to you,

podría contarnos al menos una experiencia que ha tenido con el fuego.

Could you tell us at least one experience you have had with fire?

Si leemos el texto de esta mañana, como yo lo leí hace 20 años atrás,

If we read the text from this morning, as I read it 20 years ago,

nos podríamos preguntar eso que hizo el fuego.

We could ask ourselves what the fire did.

Con esa estructura, ¿es lo que le va a pasar a todo esto que me rodea?

With that structure, is that what is going to happen to all of this that surrounds me?

¿Y por qué Dios tendrá la urgencia y la necesidad de quemarlo todo para enviarle un mensaje a los malos?

And why would God have the urgency and need to burn everything to send a message to the wicked?

¿No es esto un poquito radical?

Isn't this a little radical?

Como solía decir un profesor que yo tenía.

As a teacher I used to have would say.

Que uno no tiene que para matar un mosquito.

One doesn't have to do much to kill a mosquito.

Que uno no tiene que para lanzar una bomba atómica.

That one doesn't have to in order to launch an atomic bomb.

Entonces, sin lugar a dudas,

So, without a doubt,

estamos ante un texto de la Biblia que requiere que lo miremos con cierta cautela.

We are facing a text from the Bible that requires us to look at it with some caution.

No sea que nosotros mismos nos quememos en nuestra propia interpretación de los hechos.

lest we ourselves burn in our own interpretation of the facts.

¿Qué podemos decir acerca de lo que está ocurriendo

What can we say about what is happening?

a estos hermanos que están recibiendo esta carta de manos del apóstol?

to these brothers who are receiving this letter from the hands of the apostle?

Esta carta está dirigida a un grupo de creyentes, a un grupo amplio de cristianos

This letter is addressed to a group of believers, to a broad group of Christians.

que están regados por todo el Ponto, Galacia, Capadocia, por toda Asia, por toda Britinia del primer siglo.

who are scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, all Asia, and all Bithynia of the first century.

Para que tengan una idea, la región es tan vasta la que va dirigida esta carta

To give you an idea, the region this letter is addressed to is so vast.

que Puerto Rico cabría unas 36 veces dentro de esta región.

that Puerto Rico would fit about 36 times within this region.

Hace 1914 años atrás que se escribió esta carta.

This letter was written 1914 years ago.

A una región extensa donde habitaban los cristianos.

To an extensive region where the Christians lived.

Y en esta carta el autor bíblico hace la salvedad a los nuevos que se están convirtiendo

And in this letter, the biblical author makes a note to the newcomers who are converting.

a que se unan a la iglesia, pero a la misma vez dejen atrás aquellas costumbres

to join the church, but at the same time leave behind those customs

y maneras de vivir que ellos exhibían y disfrutaban mientras eran parte del mundo pagano o gentil.

and ways of living that they displayed and enjoyed while they were part of the pagan or Gentile world.

Este epístola está preocupada por la doctrina, por lo que se enseña acerca de la fe y acerca de Dios.

This epistle is concerned with doctrine, with what is taught about faith and about God.

Pero está también muy preocupado por el modo en el que estos nuevos creyentes que se afilian a la iglesia cristiana

But he is also very concerned about the way in which these new believers are affiliating with the Christian church.

They are showing a way of life to the world.

Como un hecho concreto, ya nos han dicho algunos que han estudiado extensamente y previamente este texto

As a concrete fact, some who have studied this text extensively and in advance have already told us.

que estos creyentes viven en un mundo paganizado.

that these believers live in a paganized world.

Son una minoría en medio de una mayoría.

They are a minority in the midst of a majority.

Son cristianos en un mundo no cristiano.

They are Christians in a non-Christian world.

Muy parecido a lo que ya nosotros, esta generación de creyentes,

Very similar to what we, this generation of believers,

está empezando a vivir en la era de la post-cristiandad.

He is beginning to live in the era of post-Christianity.

Eran una minoría en un contexto donde las ideas acerca de Dios y de la vida

They were a minority in a context where ideas about God and life

eran distintas a aquellas que se enseñaban a través de los labios de los apóstoles.

they were different from those taught through the lips of the apostles.

Y como viven en un contexto pagano, la gente mayoritariamente que rodea a estos cristianos

And since they live in a pagan context, the majority of the people surrounding these Christians

crece en un mundo pagano.

grows up in a pagan world.

Así que estos creyentes al venir a la iglesia y afiliarse al evangelio

So these believers, by coming to church and affiliating with the gospel

están atravesando por una potente presión externa que en muchos casos

they are going through a strong external pressure that in many cases

hacía que algunos de estos cristianos después de afiliarse,

made some of these Christians, after joining,

a la iglesia, regresaran arrastrados por la presión a su antigua manera de vivir.

to the church, they will be dragged back by pressure to their old way of living.

Así que eran convencidos por el evangelio, se afiliaban a la iglesia,

So they were convinced by the gospel, they joined the church,

pero la presión externa era tan brutal que finalmente ganaba la mayoría sobre esta minoría.

but the external pressure was so brutal that the majority finally prevailed over this minority.

Las presiones es un tema que Pedro no deja fuera al escribimiento.

Pressures are a topic that Pedro does not leave out of his writing.

Y es un hecho importante cuando leemos la segunda carta a Pedro.

And it is an important fact when we read the second letter to Peter.

Porque hay cosas que hacemos por convicción, pero hay cosas que hacemos por presión.

Because there are things we do out of conviction, but there are things we do out of pressure.

Hay cosas que las hacemos porque estamos convencidos de ellas.

There are things we do because we are convinced of them.

Hay cosas que hacemos porque sabemos que las tenemos que hacer y algo dentro de nosotros

There are things we do because we know we have to do them, and something within us...

nos ha hecho creer que si no lo hacemos, estamos en aprietos,

it has made us believe that if we don't do it, we are in trouble,

estamos en aprietos.

We are in trouble.

O estaríamos fallándonos a nosotros mismos por convicción.

Or we would be failing ourselves out of conviction.

Y hay veces que hacemos las cosas no porque las creemos, sino porque nos presionan.

And there are times when we do things not because we believe in them, but because we are pressured.

Y estas presiones aquí en el texto se consideran como fuerzas contrarias,

And these pressures here in the text are considered as opposing forces,

fuerzas antagónicas a Dios.

antagonistic forces to God.

Porque presionan a estos creyentes en la dirección contraria que los quiere ubicar,

Because they pressure these believers in the opposite direction that wants to place them.

a los quiere mover el evangelio de Jesucristo.

He wants to move them with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Y toda fuerza que se opone al evangelio, a la restauración de la vida,

And all force that opposes the gospel, to the restoration of life,

a que estas vidas entren a un nuevo modo de vivir, son consideradas como antidios.

To the extent that these lives enter a new way of living, they are considered anti-God.

Son consideradas como fuerzas de la muerte.

They are considered forces of death.

Fuerzas destructivas que atascan, destruyen y quebrantan el propósito de Dios para con su pueblo.

Destructive forces that obstruct, destroy, and undermine God's purpose for His people.

Son el viento contrario, porque no les permite avanzar en la fe.

They are the headwind because it does not allow them to advance in faith.

Y estas fuerzas, dice Tillman, Frank Tillman, que vienen de distintos lugares.

And these forces, says Tillman, Frank Tillman, come from different places.

Estas fuerzas opositoras o estos vientos contrarios,

These opposing forces or these opposing winds,

son las que nos dicen que el viento primero sopla por un lado de la casa

they are the ones that tell us that the wind first blows on one side of the house

y después sopla por el otro lado de la casa.

and then it blows from the other side of the house.

Así que el hecho de que haya soplado el viento y acontezca un silencio

So the fact that the wind has blown and a silence occurs.

no significa que ha acabado toda la historia del huracán.

it does not mean that the entire story of the hurricane is over.

Estamos viviendo nada más y nada menos que el ojo del huracán

We are living nothing more and nothing less than the eye of the hurricane.

para luego vivir la otra fuerza contraria.

to then live the other opposing force.

Por un lado, la fuerza contraria es la fuerza contraria.

On one hand, the opposing force is the opposing force.

Por otro lado, están las influencias de la sociedad

On the other hand, there are the influences of society.

que rodean a estos nuevos conversos,

that surround these new converts,

que no es otra cosa que las fuerzas de la sociedad romana que había conquistado todo este lugar.

which is nothing other than the forces of the Roman society that had conquered this whole place.

Pero también vienen fuerzas de gente que conocían a estos creyentes.

But there are also forces of people who knew these believers.

Fuerzas de afuera, pero también habían vientos de adentro.

Forces from the outside, but there were also winds from within.

Familiares, conocidos, gente que eran los vecinos de estos cristianos

Relatives, acquaintances, people who were the neighbors of these Christians.

comenzaron también a hacer presión para que estos cristianos abandonaran la fe

They also began to put pressure on these Christians to abandon their faith.

y volvieran de nuevo a los antiguos caminos.

and they returned again to the ancient paths.

El modo que dice Tillman que utilizaba esta comunidad de afuera y de adentro

The way that Tillman says this community from the outside and inside was used.

era el medio del maltrato verbal.

it was the midst of verbal abuse.

Maltrataban verbalmente a los cristianos

They verbally mistreated the Christians.

para que regresaran al pantano,

to return to the swamp,

para que regresaran a su ya superada manera de vivir.

so that they would return to their already overcome way of living.

Los maltrataban para que retrocedieran.

They mistreated them to make them back down.

Primera de Juan, capítulo 4, verso 3,

First John, chapter 4, verse 3,

hace una descripción de la vida absurda de la cual Dios había sacado,

makes a description of the absurd life from which God had brought out,

ha sacado a estos creyentes y les dice no vuelvan,

He has taken out these believers and tells them not to return.

no regresen a esa manera absurda de vivir de donde Dios ya los ha sacado.

Do not return to that absurd way of living from which God has already taken you out.

No regresen, no retornen, no miren hacia atrás.

Do not return, do not turn back, do not look back.

Porque el tiempo ya ha pasado,

Because the time has already passed,

les es suficiente para haber hecho lo que agrada a los gentiles,

it is enough for them to have done what pleases the Gentiles,

habiendo andado en sensualidad, lujurias, borracheras, orgías,

having indulged in sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, orgies,

embriagueces y abominables idolatrías.

drunkenness and abominable idolatries.

No vuelvan atrás, no se dejen presionar para regresar a ese antiguo modo de vivir

Don't go back, don't let yourselves be pressured to return to that old way of living.

El tono desesperante con el que Pedro escribe,

The frustrating tone with which Pedro writes,

está en la palabra de Dios, en la palabra de Dios, en la palabra de Dios, en la palabra de Dios, en la palabra de Dios.

it is in the word of God, in the word of God, in the word of God, in the word of God, in the word of God.

Esta carta revela que el proyecto cristiano está a punto de fracasar

This letter reveals that the Christian project is about to fail.

y la iglesia en más de una ocasión estuvo en peligro de extinguirse

and the church was at risk of extinction on more than one occasion

y este fue uno de sus momentos.

and this was one of his moments.

No había espada,

There was no sword,

no había una persecución feroz,

there was no fierce chase,

pero el simple hecho de la presión social de afuera y de adentro,

but the simple fact of the social pressure from outside and inside,

estaba siendo suficiente para que retrocedieran las fuerzas de Dios

it was enough for the forces of God to retreat

y aquellos convertidos que estaban en inminente fracaso.

and those converts who were on the verge of failure.

A los cristianos que se convertían les hacían la vida imposible

They made life impossible for the Christians who converted.

porque la fe cristiana estaba alcanzando notariedad en la sociedad.

because the Christian faith was gaining prominence in society.

Ese estilo de vida se exigía a cada creyente que se afiliaba a la iglesia.

That lifestyle was demanded of every believer who joined the church.

Por lo tanto, los paganos se daban cuenta del cambio radical de vida

Therefore, the pagans realized the radical change of life.

que estos cristianos nuevos estaban dando.

that these new Christians were giving.

Así que era bastante común notar si había un pagano frente a ti o había un cristiano

So it was quite common to notice whether there was a pagan in front of you or a Christian.

because the way of behaving was often contradictory

to what most people did or how they behaved.

Así que podrían decir,

So what they could say,

una de estas cosas,

one of these things,

no es como las otras,

it's not like the others,

es diferente de todas las demás.

It is different from all the others.

¿Qué era lo diferente?

What was different?

El cristiano que se comportaba,

The Christian who behaved,

que representaba a Dios a través de un modo de vivir.

that represented God through a way of life.

Por lo tanto, era objeto de agresión

Therefore, it was the object of aggression.

por un contexto que estaba dominado por otras creencias.

for a context that was dominated by other beliefs.

Tanto es así que Pedro mismo describe

So much so that Peter himself describes

que lo que ellos están viviendo,

what they are living,

como creyente y como iglesia,

as a believer and as a church,

es una prueba de fuego.

It's a test of fire.

Estamos viviendo una prueba de fuego.

We are going through a trial by fire.

Miren, a los cristianos se les calumniaba.

Look, Christians were slandered.

A los cristianos, si usted los veía, se les insultaba.

Christians, if you saw them, were insulted.

Y estaba permitido, ¿oyó?

And it was allowed, you heard?

Se les podía insultar.

They could be insulted.

Si usted era cristiano, puede decir todo tipo de insultos, no había problema.

If you were Christian, you could say all kinds of insults, there was no problem.

Como eres cristiano, eres otra categoría.

Since you are Christian, you are in a different category.

Se podía mentir, se podía inventar, se podían crear casos,

One could lie, one could invent, one could create cases,

y sobre todo, se podía hacer el mundo.

And above all, one could create the world.

Se podía hacer bullying.

Bullying could be done.

Usted podía hacer un bullying contra los cristianos

You could bully Christians.

y estaba permitido en la sociedad romana.

and it was allowed in Roman society.

Así que en una sociedad donde se permite insultar, humillar,

So in a society where insulting and humiliating is allowed,

burlar, calumniar abiertamente a aquellos que son cristianos,

mock, openly slander those who are Christians,

puede usted darle una pista de lo que estaban viviendo,

Can you give a hint of what they were experiencing?

al menos un poco, estos cristianos del primer siglo.

at least a little, these first-century Christians.

Los cristianos tenían mala reputación.

Christians had a bad reputation.

It's not like now, if you are a Christian, people say,

They spoke so badly of them that wherever you went,

that a Christian would stand up, say he was a Christian, and they would mark him with an X.

No en balde, los cristianos decidieron enterrarse bajo tierra.

It is no coincidence that Christians decided to bury themselves underground.

Usted va a Roma y va a encontrar la famosa catacumba.

You are going to Rome and you are going to find the famous catacomb.

Los cristianos tuvieron que irse bajo la tierra, literalmente,

Christians had to go underground, literally.

a vivir su vida cristiana, adorar a su Señor,

to live their Christian life, to worship their Lord,

porque en la superficie era muy difícil sobrevivir.

because it was very difficult to survive on the surface.

Era tan difícil que tuvieron que irse a adorar al Señor

It was so difficult that they had to go worship the Lord.

donde estaban sus muertos enterrados.

where their dead were buried.

Debajo de la tierra.

Beneath the earth.

Y a este grupo de creyentes, Pedro les escribe esta epístola, esta carta,

And to this group of believers, Peter writes this epistle, this letter,

y los exhorta a que no se dejen vencer por estas presiones,

and urges them not to be overcome by these pressures,

a que resistan el fuego de la prueba y que tienen que enderezar sus caminos

that they withstand the fire of the trial and that they must straighten their ways.

haciendo tres cosas específicas que él les pide.

doing three specific things that he asks of them.

Número uno, no dejen de ser pacientes.

Number one, don’t stop being patient.

Segundo, no dejen de esperar en la promesa de que Jesucristo regresará.

Second, do not stop waiting for the promise that Jesus Christ will return.

Y en tercer lugar, les dice, no dejen de vivir en rectitud

And thirdly, he tells them, do not stop living righteously.

a pesar de las presiones que tengan allá afuera.

despite the pressures they may have out there.

¿Amén?

Amen?

Esta carta va dirigida a alentar a estos cristianos

This letter is intended to encourage these Christians.

para que tengan mucha paciencia.

so that they have a lot of patience.

Para que si han esperado mucho, no dejen de esperar.

So that if they have waited long, they do not stop waiting.

Y para que no se rajen.

And so they don't back out.

Para que no enganchen los guantes.

So that the gloves don't get caught.

Porque el hecho de que la mayoría piense de un modo

Because the fact that the majority thinks in one way

no significa que la mayoría tiene la razón.

It doesn't mean that the majority is right.

Y en eso la democracia se equivoca.

And in that, democracy is mistaken.

Muchas veces las multitudes se equivocan.

Many times crowds are wrong.

Usted no es lo que la gente dice que es usted.

You are not what people say you are.

Y si mil personas se ponen de acuerdo para decir

And if a thousand people agree to say

que usted es una cosa, usted no necesariamente es eso

that you are one thing, you are not necessarily that

que la gente dice que es usted.

what people say that you are.

Ahora, si es su psiquiatra y le ha hecho una evaluación psiquiátrica,

Now, if it is your psychiatrist and they have done a psychiatric evaluation,

creale a su psiquiatra, ¿verdad?

Believe it to your psychiatrist, right?

O a su psicólogo.

Or to your psychologist.

Pero en el contexto donde la gente está persiguiendo

But in the context where people are chasing

a los creyentes, Pedro les dice

to the believers, Peter says

ustedes no son lo que la gente dice que ustedes son.

You are not what people say you are.

Sean pacientes, sigan esperando

Be patient, keep waiting.

y sigan viviendo justicia y rectitud.

and continue living justice and righteousness.

No dejen que sus rodillas se doblen.

Don't let your knees buckle.

Como un argumento ante la crítica

As an argument against the criticism

de que la gente se burlaba y decía, pero, ¿Cristo cuándo?

that people mocked and said, but, when is Christ coming?

¿Cuándo viene Cristo?

When is Christ coming?

Le decía a la gente a los cristianos.

I was telling people, the Christians.

Ah, pues dice que viene pronto y no viene.

Ah, well, he says he's coming soon and he doesn't come.

Pedro les dice, mira, cuando les digan eso,

Pedro tells them, look, when they tell you that,

ustedes díganle esto.

You tell him this.

Para el Señor un día es como mil años.

For the Lord, a day is like a thousand years.

Y para el Señor mil años es como un día.

For the Lord a thousand years is like a day.

En otras palabras, es irrelevante para Dios el reloj.

In other words, the clock is irrelevant to God.

Cuando los presionen, cuando los critiquen.

When they pressure them, when they criticize them.

Cuando les digan, mira, el Señor no llega.

When they tell you, look, the Lord is not coming.

Pero ante todo eso, Pedro afirma que el fuego lo va a quemar todo,

Como cuando se pone oro crudo y sucio en el crisol,

y al final las impurezas se queman, y solo queda el metal preciado.

And in the end, the impurities are burned away, and only the precious metal remains.

Entonces Pedro les está diciendo otra cosa distinta a los hermanos cristianos.
