PROLOGUE

Yo por bien tengo que cosas tan señaladas, y por ventura nunca oídas ni vistas, vengan a noticia de muchos y no se entierren en la sepultura del olvido,

For my part, I must ensure that such remarkable things, and perhaps never heard or seen, come to the attention of many and are not buried in the grave of oblivion.

pues podría ser que a alguno que las lea haya algo que le agrade, y a los que no ahondaren tanto los deleite,

Well, it could be that someone who reads it might find something they like, and for those who don't delve too much, it might still delight them.

y a este propósito dice Plinio que no hay libro, por malo que sea, que no tenga alguna cosa buena.

And for this purpose, Pliny says that there is no book, no matter how bad it is, that does not contain something good.

Mayormente que los gustos no son todos unos, mas los que uno no come, otro se pierde por ello.

Mostly, tastes are not all the same; what one person does not eat, another misses out on because of it.

si una que a todos se comunicase, mayormente siendo sin perjuicio y pudiendo sacar de ella algún fruto.

if one that communicated with everyone, mostly being without harm and being able to derive some fruit from it.

Porque si así no fuese, muy pocos escribirían para uno solo, pues no se hace sin trabajo.

Because if it weren't so, very few would write for just one person, as it doesn't happen without effort.

Y quieren, ya que lo pasan, ser recompensados, no con dineros, mas con que vean y lean sus obras.

And they want, since they go through it, to be rewarded, not with money, but with the fact that their works are seen and read.

Y si hay de qué, se las alaben.

And if there is reason, let them be praised.

Y a este propósito dice Tulio, la honra cría las artes.

And for this purpose, Tulio says, honor breeds the arts.

¿Quién piensa que el soldado que es primero de la escala tiene más aborrecido el vivir?

Who thinks that the soldier who is first in rank has a more abhorrent life?

No, por cierto, mas el deseo de alabanza le hace ponerse en peligro, y así, en las artes y letras, es lo mismo.

No, indeed, but the desire for praise puts him in danger, and thus, in the arts and letters, it is the same.

Predica muy bien el presentado, y es hombre que desea mucho el provecho de las ánimas,

He preaches very well, and he is a man who greatly desires the benefit of souls.

mas pregunten a su merced si le pesa cuando le dicen,

"but ask your grace if it weighs on you when they tell you,"

Justó muy ruinmente el señor don fulano, y dio el sallete de armas al truán porque le loaba de haber llevado muy buenas lanzas.

Just very rudely, Mr. So-and-so, and gave the weapon medallion to the scoundrel because he praised him for having brought very good spears.

¿Qué hiciera si fuera verdad?

What would I do if it were true?

Your grace, accept the humble service of one who would make it richer if his power and desire were aligned.

And then your grace shall be written to and the case shall be related in great detail,

parecióme no tomadle por el medio, sino por el principio,

it seemed to me not to take it from the middle, but from the beginning,

porque se tenga entera noticia de mi persona,

so that you have full knowledge of me,

y también porque consideren los que heredaron nobles estados, cuán poco se les debe,

and also because those who inherited noble states should consider how little they are owed,

pues fortuna fue con ellos parcial,

well, fortune was partial to them,

y cuanto más hicieron los que siéndoles contraria, con fuerza y maña remando, salieron a buen puerto.

And the more those who, being against them, with strength and skill in rowing, reached port safely.

Tratado primero, cuenta Lázaro su vida y cuyo hijo fue.

First treaty, Lazarus tells of his life and whose son he was.

Pues sepa vuestra merced ante todas cosas que a mí llaman Lázaro de Tormes,

Well, your grace should know above all things that I am called Lazarillo de Tormes,

hijo de Tome González y de Antona Pérez, naturales de Tejares, aldea de Salamanca.

son of Tome González and Antona Pérez, natives of Tejares, a village in Salamanca.

Mi nacimiento fue dentro del río Tormes, por la cual causa tomé el sobrenombre, y fue de esta manera.

My birth was in the river Tormes, for which reason I took the nickname, and it was this way.

Mi padre, que Dios perdone, tenía cargo de proveer una molienda de una aceña que está a ribera de aquel río,

My father, may God forgive him, was responsible for providing a mill from a mill that is on the banks of that river.

Pues siendo yo niño de ocho años, achacaron a mi padre ciertas sangrías mal hechas en los costales de los que allí a moler venían,

por lo que fue preso, y confesó, y no negó, y padeció persecución por justicia.

At this time a certain army was formed against the Moors, among whom was my father.

que a la sazón estaba desterrado por el desastre ya dicho, con cargo de acemilero de un caballero que allá fue,

who at that time was exiled due to the aforementioned disaster, serving as the muleteer for a knight who went there,

My widowed mother, seeing herself without a husband and without shelter, decided to lean on the good ones for being one of them.

and came to live in the city, and rented a small house, and started cooking for certain students,

and washed the clothes for certain stable boys of the commander of Magdalena,

de manera que fue frecuentando las caballerizas.

so he began to frequent the stables.

Ella y un hombre moreno de aquellos que las bestias curaban vinieron en conocimiento.

She and a dark-skinned man, one of those whom the beasts healed, came to an understanding.

Este algunas veces se venía a nuestra casa y se iba a la mañana,

Sometimes he would come to our house and leave in the morning,

otras veces de día llegaba a la puerta en achaque de comprar huevos y entrábase en casa.

Other times during the day, he would arrive at the door pretending to buy eggs and would come into the house.

Yo, al principio de su entrada, besábame con él y habíale miedo, viendo el color y mal gesto que tenía.

I, at the beginning of his entrance, kissed him and was afraid, seeing the color and bad expression he had.

Mas de que vi que con su venida mejoraba el comer, fuile queriendo bien,

More than I saw that with his arrival the food improved, I began to love him.

because he always brought bread, pieces of meat, and in the winter logs that we used to keep warm.

De manera que continuando con la posada y conversación, mi madre vino a darme un negrito muy bonito,

So, continuing with the inn and conversation, my mother came to give me a very pretty little black boy,

Y acuérdome que estando el negro de mi padre trevejando con el mozuelo,

And I remember that while my father's black man was flirting with the young lad,

como el niño vía a mi madre y a mí blancos y a él no, huía del conmiedo para mi madre,

As the boy saw my mother and me as white and him not, he fled from the fear for my mother.

y señalando con el dedo decía, madre, coco.

And pointing with his finger, he said, mother, coconut.

Respondió él riendo, y de puta.

He responded, laughing, and like a whore.

Yo, aunque bien muchacho, noté aquella palabra de mi hermanico, y dije entre mí,

I, although a good boy, noticed that word from my little brother, and I said to myself,

cuántos debe de haber en el mundo que huyen de otros porque no se ven a sí mesmos.

How many must there be in the world who flee from others because they do not see themselves?

Quiso nuestra fortuna que la conversación del zaide, que así se llamaba, llegó a oídos del mayordomo,

Our fortune willed that the conversation of the zaide, as he was called, reached the ears of the steward,

y hecha pesquisa hallose que la mitad por medio de la cebada que para las bestias le daban hurtaba,

And after investigation it was found that half of the barley given to the animals was being stolen.

y salvados, leña, almohadas, mandiles, y las mantas y sábanas de los caballos hacía perdidas,

and saved, firewood, pillows, aprons, and the blankets and sheets of the horses went missing,

y cuando otra cosa no tenía, las bestias deserraba, y con todo esto acudía a mi madre para criar a mi hermanico.

And when I had nothing else, I would herd the beasts, and with all this, I would go to my mother to help raise my little brother.

No nos maravillemos de un clérigo ni fraile, porque el uno hurta de los pobres y el otro de casa,

Let us not be amazed by a clergyman or a friar, because one steals from the poor and the other from home.

para sus devotas y para ayuda de otro tanto, cuando a un pobre esclavo el amor le animaba a esto.

for their devotees and to help another just as much, when love encouraged a poor slave to do this.

Y probósele cuanto digo, y aún más, porque a mí con amenazas me preguntaban,

And I was tested for everything I say, and even more, because they asked me with threats.

y como niño respondía, y descubría cuanto sabía con miedo, hasta ciertas herraduras que por mandado de mi madre a un herrero vendí.

And as a child, I responded, and I discovered how much I knew with fear, even certain horseshoes that I sold to a blacksmith at my mother's request.

Al triste de mi padrastro azotaron y pringaron, y a mi madre pusieron pena por justicia sobre el acostumbrado centenario,

They whipped and smeared my sad stepfather, and they punished my mother for justice over the usual centenary.

que en casa del sobredicho comendador no entrase, ni al lastimado zaide en la suya acogiase.

that neither the aforementioned commander should enter his house, nor should the injured Zaide take refuge in his.

Por no echar la soga tras el caldero, la triste se esforzó y cumplió la sentencia, y por evitar peligro y quitarse de malas lenguas,

For not throwing the rope behind the cauldron, the sad one made an effort and fulfilled the sentence, and to avoid danger and rid herself of bad tongues,

he went to serve those who were currently living at the inn of La Solana.

Y allí, padeciendo mil importunidades, se acabó de criar mi hermanico hasta que supo andar,

And there, suffering a thousand importunities, my little brother was raised until he learned to walk.

y a mí, hasta ser buen mozuelo, que iba a los huéspedes por vino y candelas, y por lo demás que me mandaban.

And for me, even being a good lad, I went to the guests for wine and candles, and for everything else they commanded me.

En este tiempo vino a posar al mesón un ciego, el cual, pareciéndole que yo sería para destralle, me pidió a mi madre, y ella me encomendó a él, diciéndole cómo era hijo de un buen hombre, al cual, por ensalzarle, era un hombre.

During this time, a blind man came to stay at the inn, and thinking that I would be useful to him, he asked my mother for me, and she entrusted me to him, telling him how I was the son of a good man, who, in order to praise him, was a man.

Y yo le dije que, por la fe, había muerto en la de los gelbes, y que ella, confiaba en Dios, no saldría peor hombre que mi padre, y que le rogaba me tratase bien y mirase por mí, pues era huérfano.

And I told her that, by faith, I had died in the gelbes, and that she, trusting in God, would not come out a worse man than my father, and that I begged her to treat me well and look after me, as I was an orphan.

Él le respondió que así lo haría, y que me recibía no por mozo, sino por hijo. Y así le comencé a servir y a destrar a mi nuevo y viejo amo.

He responded that he would do so, and that he welcomed me not as a servant, but as a son. And so I began to serve him and to train my new and old master.

Como estuvimos en Salamanca algunos días, pareciéndole a mi amo que no era la ganancia su contento, determinó irse de allí.

Since we were in Salamanca for a few days, and my master thought that his happiness was not in the profit, he decided to leave there.

Y cuando nos hubimos de partir, yo fui a ver a mi madre, y ambos llorando, me dio su bendición, y dijo,

And when we had to part, I went to see my mother, and both of us crying, she gave me her blessing, and said,

—Hijo, ya sé que no te veré más. Procura ser bueno, y Dios te guíe. Criado te he, y con buen amo te he puesto. Válete por ti.

—Son, I know that I will not see you again. Try to be good, and may God guide you. I have raised you, and I have placed you with a good master. Take care of yourself.

Y así me fui para mi amo, que esperándome estaba.

And so I went to my master, who was waiting for me.

Salimos de Salamanca, y llegando a la puente, está a la entrada de ella un animal de piedra que casi tiene forma de toro,

We left Salamanca, and upon reaching the bridge, there is a stone animal at its entrance that almost resembles a bull.

y el ciego mandóme que llegase cerca del anillo.

And the blind man commanded me to come close to the ring.

Llegué al animal, y allí puesto me dijo, —Lázaro, llega el oído a este toro, y oirás gran ruido dentro de él.

I reached the animal, and there it said to me, "Lázaro, put your ear to this bull, and you will hear a great noise inside it."

Yo simplemente llegué, creyendo ser ansí, y como sintió que tenía la cabeza a par de la piedra, afirmó recio la mano, y diome una gran calabazada en el diablo del toro,

I simply arrived, believing to be so, and as I felt that I had my head near the stone, I gripped my hand tightly, and gave me a big bump on the devil of the bull.

que más de tres días me duró el dolor de la cornada, y díjome, —Necio, aprende que el mozo del ciego un punto ha de saber más que el diablo.

It lasted me more than three days the pain of the goring, and he said to me, —Fool, learn that the blind man's boy must know a little more than the devil.

Y rió mucho la burla.

And laughed a lot at the mockery.

Y parecióme que en aquel instante desperté de la simpleza en que como niño dormido estaba.

And it seemed to me that at that moment I awakened from the simplicity in which I was like a sleeping child.

Dije entre mí, —Verdad dice éste que me cumple avivar el ojo y avisar, pues sólo soy, y pensar cómo me sepa valer.

I said to myself, "Indeed, this one says I must sharpen my eye and be alert, for I am just myself, and I must think about how to manage."

Comenzamos nuestro camino, y en muy pocos días me mostró Jerigonza, y como me viese de buen ingenio, holgábase mucho, y decía, —Yo oro ni plata no te lo puedo dar, mas avisos para vivir muchos te mostraré.

We started our journey, and in just a few days Jerigonza showed me, and when he saw that I was clever, he was very pleased and said, "I cannot give you gold or silver, but I will show you many tips for living."

Y fue ansí que después de Dios éste me dio la vida, y siendo ciego me alumbró y adestró en la carrera de vivir.

And it was thus that after God, this one gave me life, and being blind, he enlightened and trained me in the race of living.

Huelgo de contar a vuestra merced estas niñerías para mostrar cuánta virtud sea saber los hombres subir siendo bajos, y dejarse bajar siendo altos cuanto vicio.

I spare you the details of these childish things to show how much virtue there is in knowing how men will rise being low, and letting themselves be brought down being high, how much vice that entails.

Pues tornando al bueno de mi ciego y contando sus cosas, vuestra merced sepa que desde que Dios crió el mundo, ninguno formó más astuto ni sagaz.

Well, returning to my good blind man and recounting his tales, your Grace should know that since God created the world, none has been more cunning or shrewd.

En su oficio era un águila.

In his trade, he was an eagle.

Ciento y tantas oraciones sacó.

He brought out a hundred and so sentences.

Un tono bajo, reposado y muy sonable que hacía resonar la iglesia donde rezaba, un rostro humilde y devoto que con muy buen continente ponía cuando rezaba, sin hacer gestos ni visajes, con boca ni ojos, como otros suelen hacer.

He also shortened the prayer, and half of the prayer was never finished because he had ordered me that when the one who commanded the prayer was leaving, I should pull at the end of his hood; I did that, and then he would shout again, saying to pray such and such prayer, as they usually say.

usaba poner cabesí un jarrello de vino cuando comíamos y yo muy depresto le hacía y daba un par de besos callados y tornábale a su lugar mas durome poco que en los tragos conocía la falta

I used to put a little jar of wine on the table when we ate, and I would quickly give it a couple of silent kisses and return it to its place, but little by little, I noticed the absence in the drinks.

y por reservar su vino a salvo nunca después desamparaba el jarro antes lo tenía por el asa asido mas no había piedra imán que así trajese así como yo con una paja larga de centeno que para aquel menester tenía hecha la cual metiéndola en la boca del jarro chupando el vino lo dejaba a buenas noches

And by reserving his wine safely, he never abandoned the jar; he held it by the handle, but there was no magnet that could draw it as I did with a long straw made of rye that I had prepared for that purpose, which, by inserting it into the mouth of the jar and sucking the wine, I left it goodnight.

But however sly the traitor was, I think he sensed me and before long changed his intention, placing his jug between his legs and covering it with his hand, and thus he drank securely.
