Esta semana vamos a recuperar la historia de una de las colonias españolas.

This week we are going to revisit the history of one of the Spanish colonies.

Guinea Ecuatorial, un pequeño país africano que llegó a tener estatus de provincia española en los años 60 y que aún mantiene el español como lengua oficial.

Equatorial Guinea, a small African country that became a Spanish province in the 1960s and still maintains Spanish as an official language.

En 1474, el navegante portugués Fernando Pó descubría en el Golfo de Biafra una isla de sorprendente belleza que bautizó con el nombre de Fermón.

In 1474, the Portuguese navigator Fernando Pó discovered an island of stunning beauty in the Gulf of Biafra, which he named Fermón.

En 1778, España incorpora sus destinos a la isla que lleva hoy el nombre de su descubridor.

In 1778, Spain incorporates its territories to the island that today bears the name of its discoverer.

Fernando Pó se convierte así en la provincia española más distante en kilómetros, pero no en afectos.

Fernando Pó thus becomes the Spanish province furthest away in kilometers, but not in affection.

Y así sonaba la primera emisión de televisión española en Guinea Ecuatorial.

And that was how the first broadcast of Spanish television in Equatorial Guinea sounded.

Los bubis, que representan la mayoría de sus habitantes.

Anastasia pertenece a la etnia de los Fang y nació en esa Guinea Ecuatorial de dos caras,

Anastasia belongs to the Fang ethnic group and was born in that two-faced Equatorial Guinea,

donde la tradición tenía mucho peso, pero también se pudo beneficiar de nacer en la colonia española.

where tradition held significant weight, but it also benefited from being born in the Spanish colony.

De pequeña era muy inquieta, muy curiosa, y muchas veces me gustaba leer, se encontraba un papel escrito.

Entonces, nací yo. Entonces, y en el pueblo, si tú no tienes varón, pues, no eres nadie.

En la Casa de la Palabra, mi padre no era nadie. Eso le molestaba mucho a mi madre.

In the House of the Word, my father was nobody. That bothered my mother a lot.

Entonces, ella animaba para que yo pueda ir al colegio.

So, she encouraged me to go to school.

Yo llevaba mi asiento. El maestro vio que me interesaba leer y tal, aprendí enseguida.

I brought my own seat. The teacher saw that I was interested in reading and such, and I learned right away.

Entonces, pidió a...

Then, he/she asked for...

A mis padres si yo podía ir a la ciudad.

To my parents if I could go to the city.

Un colegio de monjas. La mayoría eran catalanas.

A convent school. Most of them were Catalan.

Y me apreciaban mucho porque me gustaba estudiar.

And they valued me a lot because I liked to study.

Eran las mejores alumnas.

They were the best students.

Las monjas, entonces, teníamos como diputaciones, se llamaba entonces.

The nuns, then, we had what was called deputations.

Y daban unas becas que venían de España.

And they offered some scholarships that came from Spain.

Y me dieron una beca.

And they gave me a scholarship.

Por eso, pues, fui al colegio en mi ciudad de Beijing.

That's why I went to school in my city of Beijing.

Y ahí ya bajé al colegio de Bata, siempre con las monjas.

And then I went down to the school in Bata, always with the nuns.

Y en Bata es donde empecé a hacer el bachillerato.

And it was in Bata where I started to pursue my bachelor’s degree.

Como sacaba muy buenas notas, pues, muchas veces nos daban como premio.

Since I got very good grades, we were often given rewards as a prize.

Veníamos a España en verano.

We were coming to Spain in the summer.

Eso era en 1963.

That was in 1963.

Nos daban vueltas por todas las ciudades, en fin, y tal, para conocer.

They took us around all the cities, you know, and so on, to get to know them.

Y de hecho, pues...

And in fact, well...

Tengo una amiga de entonces, una catalana, inmaculada.

I have a friend from then, a Catalan, immaculate.

Eras una privilegiada, ¿no?

You were a privileged one, weren't you?

Más que privilegiada.

More than privileged.

Porque, como te digo, que en nuestra tribu, pues, la mujer solamente es para casarse.

Because, as I tell you, in our tribe, the woman is only for marrying.

No es para estudiar.

It's not for studying.

Y entonces, pues, por eso atacaban a mi padre en la Casa de la Palabra.

And so, well, that's why they attacked my father at the House of the Word.

Pero mi madre, pues, siempre ya se esforzaba que yo fuera a la escuela.

But my mother always made an effort for me to go to school.

Pero había momentos que se producía, mi padre producía cacao y café.

But there were moments when he produced, my father produced cocoa and coffee.

Y todo eso, pues, lo compraban los colonos, como digo yo, los españoles.

And all that, well, the settlers bought it, as I say, the Spaniards.

Y ellos son los que ponían el precio.

Desde claro, el año que decían, uh, el cacao ha bajado, el café ha bajado.

Pues, mi padre me decía, pues, lo sentía mucho.

Y entonces venía al menos una vez al mes a visitarme en el colegio de Bellín.

En Bata no podía venir mucho, estaba más lejos.

In Bata, I couldn't come much, it was farther away.

Pero si venía alguien que venía, me mandaba algo.

But if someone who was coming came, they would send me something.

Mi padre, de pequeña, pues, era el que me cantaba las nanas.

My father, when I was little, was the one who sang me lullabies.

Si estaba un poco malita, cuando se estaba desviviendo por mí.

If she was feeling a little unwell when she was going out of her way for me.

Y me llevaba a la Casa de la Palabra.

And he took me to the House of the Word.

Entonces, le reprochaban a él, pero yo me enteraba de muchas cosas.

So, they reproached him, but I found out about many things.

Que otras niñas no...

No se enteraban.

They were not aware.

Entonces, estuve un poco educado, como un chico.

So, I was a little polite, like a boy.

Pero, al estar mucho tiempo en la Casa de la Palabra,

pues, escuchaba muchas cosas que otras niñas no se enteraban.

Well, I heard many things that other girls didn't know about.

Eso me lleva cuestionando mucho la vida del pueblo.

That makes me question village life a lot.

Y cuestionando, me digo,

And questioning, I tell myself,

yo no puedo llevar toda mi vida a la vida de mi madre.

I can't carry my mother's life throughout my entire life.

De coger la cesta, ir al bosque a buscar algo de comer ahí.

Yo tengo que tener la vida diferente.

I have to have a different life.

Entonces, eso es lo que más me animaba a estudiar.

So, that was what motivated me the most to study.

Y también mi madre decía que no quería que yo siguiera la vida que ella vivía.

And my mother also said that she didn't want me to follow the life she lived.

Era muy difícil en la colonia, muy difícil.

It was very difficult in the colony, very difficult.

Pero, gracias a Dios...

Entonces, yo pude estudiar.

So, I was able to study.

Y volvimos a Guinea.

And we returned to Guinea.

Y al volver a Guinea, pues el novio de siempre que yo tenía,

And upon returning to Guinea, well, the boyfriend I always had,

pues nos casamos y es el padre de mis hijos.

Well, we got married and he is the father of my children.

Pero yo le decía que quiero seguir estudiando.

But I told him that I want to keep studying.

Él decía que si yo voy a saber más que él.

He said that if I am going to know more than him.

Él era secretario de un ministro,

He was the secretary of a minister,

el Ministerio de Educación precisamente.

the Ministry of Education precisely.

Pues una noche le detuvieron y le llevaron a la cárcel.

Well, one night they arrested him and took him to jail.

A la cárcel de Malabo se llama Black Beast.

The prison in Malabo is called Black Beast.

Empecé a ir allí por cosas políticas.

I started going there for political reasons.

Es que estaba condenado a la muerte.

He was sentenced to death.

De hecho, en una sola noche detuvieron a 17.

In fact, in a single night, they arrested 17.

Y en el famoso Día de la Libertad, que se llama el 3 de agosto,

And on the famous Day of Freedom, which is called August 3rd,

salieron solo siete.

Only seven left.

Era muy difícil aquello.

It was very difficult.

Entonces los años que estuvo allí, pues cuidándolo allí,

So the years he was there, well taking care of him there,

porque no era como la cárcel de aquí, que te dan de comer.

because it wasn't like the jail here, where they give you food.

No.

No.

Pues si no lleva de comer, pues no come.

Well, if it doesn't bring food, then it doesn't eat.

Ni le abren la celda siquiera.

They don't even open the cell for him.

Pero a él ¿por qué lo detuvieron?

But why was he arrested?

¿Por ser disidente, por ser crítico o por qué?

"Is it because of being a dissident, being critical, or why?"

No, porque era secretario de un ministro,

No, because he was the secretary of a minister,

de esos que llevaron a la cárcel.

of those who were taken to prison.

Y por supuesto, éste fue de los primeros que murieron.

And of course, he was one of the first to die.

Porque para la independencia España preparó a intelectuales

Because for independence, Spain prepared intellectuals.

para llevar a Guinea adelante.

to move Guinea forward.

Entonces estos intelectuales, cuando fue elegido presidente Macías,

So these intellectuals, when Macías was elected president,

pues bueno, como él era analfabeto prácticamente,

well, since he was practically illiterate,

pues no le gustaban los intelectuales.

Well, he didn't like intellectuals.

Como hemos dicho, son gente descontrolable.

As we have said, they are uncontrollable people.

Entonces, pues un día el demandador le fue a decir,

So, one day the complainant went to tell him,

bueno, él reunió a todos los ministros entonces, los intelectuales.

Well, he gathered all the ministers then, the intellectuals.

Y le propuso de que,

And he proposed that,

como Macías está como loco,

since Macías is acting crazy,

pues que lo llevan a matar.

Well, they're leading him to kill.

Macías era su tío, tradicionalmente no podía matarlo.

Macías was his uncle; traditionally, he could not kill him.

Pero lo detuvo, hizo todo lo posible para llevarlo con su amigo Hassan en Marruecos.

But he stopped him, he did everything he could to take him to his friend Hassan in Morocco.

Entonces los que se quedaron, pues los que sobrevivieron,

los que sobrevivieron en esa cárcel, pues uno de ellos es el padre de mis hijos.

Pero su ministro, que era el secretario de un ministro,

uno intelectual de esos, pues fueron de los que fueron asesinados.

Y la mayoría eran de mi pueblo, de Medellín, los intelectuales.

Entonces a nosotros, incluso ahora, nos miran fatal.

Anastasia pertenecía a esas apátridas emocionales,

a medio camino entre dos mundos.

halfway between two worlds.

Y así llegó a España, donde se tuvo que buscar la vida.

And so he arrived in Spain, where he had to make a living.

Pero logró su objetivo, estudiar, traerse a sus otros hijos

But he achieved his goal, to study, to bring his other children with him.

y ser un referente en defender la justicia social

and to be a leader in defending social justice

y luchar contra la violencia de género.

and fight against gender violence.

Y teníamos niños.

And we had children.

Desde una mañana nos daban un pan

Since one morning they gave us a bread.

y cortaron la mitad para guardar para mi hijo.

and they cut it in half to save for my son.

Bata, capital de la Guinea continental española,

es hoy una ciudad próspera y floreciente

que hace 25 años apenas contaba con una docena de casas.
