Es una alegría volver al aire y encontraros al otro lado después de este verano algo errático porque entre los Juegos Olímpicos, Wimbledon y la Eurocopa hemos aparecido y desaparecido más que el Guadiana.

It is a joy to be back on air and to find you on the other side after this somewhat erratic summer because between the Olympic Games, Wimbledon, and the Euro Cup, we have appeared and disappeared more than the Guadiana River.

El caso es que estamos de vuelta a la normalidad en esta nueva temporada que queremos arrancar en compañía de uno de esos autores a los que diría que casi no hace falta ni presentar porque lo raro es no haber leído nada suyo.

What I just read is an excerpt from Ropa de Casa, a memoir that covers your childhood in Logroño to your beginnings in the world of literature in Barcelona, including your youth in Zaragoza.

Este tipo de recapitulaciones, me refiero a los libros de memorias, Ignacio, atienden, imagino, a la vida de tus padres.

This type of recapitulations, I mean the memoirs, Ignacio, I imagine, pertain to your parents' lives.

A cambios vitales, cierres de ciclo, puntos de inflexión.

Vital changes, closures of cycles, turning points.

¿Cuál fue el disparador de la memoria en este caso?

Bueno, pensándolo después, yo creo que tuvo que ver con la muerte de mi madre en 2018.

Well, thinking about it later, I believe it had to do with my mother's death in 2018.

No creo que este libro lo hubiera escrito antes, sino que precisamente el hecho de que mi madre desapareciera fue lo que me hizo pensar que se iban a perder cosas.

I don't believe this book would have been written before; rather, the very fact that my mother disappeared made me think that things were going to be lost.

Cuando muere esa generación, pierdes un enlace con generaciones anteriores continuas.

When that generation dies, you lose a link with continuous previous generations.

Con otros tiempos anteriores, con otras personas que formaban parte de otro mundo anterior.

With other previous times, with other people who were part of another world before.

Y te da la sensación de que todo eso se va a perder y tienes como una necesidad de conservarlo, de preservarlo.

And you get the feeling that all of that is going to be lost, and you have a need to preserve it.

Y la literatura es una buena manera de preservar ese pasado.

Y al mismo tiempo, claro, cuando muere alguien importante en tu vida, como suele ser la madre o el padre, uno también intenta poner orden en su pasado.

El libro parte de una duda inquietante.

Saber si tu padre, cuya carrera militar había transcurrido durante el franquismo íntegramente, había sido solo el administrativo que tú recordabas o si por el contrario había participado activamente en la represión.

Condiciones, circunstancias que rodearon a mi infancia y a mi adolescencia, sino que habría sido una investigación sobre algo oscuro del pasado familiar y no era precisamente lo que yo quería hacer.

Y efectivamente cuando descubrí que mi padre no había hecho otra cosa más que, bueno, trabajo de oficina como comandante que era y que ni siquiera había intervenido en ningún tipo de acción contra el maquis, ni consejos de guerra, ni nada, pues es verdad, sentí mucho alivio.

En estos ejercicios de memoria, Ignacio, los padres suelen perder estatura, pero ganan en humanidad.

Sí, bueno, además lo que ocurre es que yo tenía el recuerdo, pues así un poco confuso de esa noche. Yo tenía nueve años y en realidad, bueno, el recuerdo era que nos sacaron de la cama un tío mío cura que queríamos muchísimo para llevarnos a dormir a un sitio especial, ¿no?

Yes, well, what happens is that I had a memory, somewhat confused of that night. I was nine years old and actually, well, the memory was that my uncle, who was a priest and whom we loved very much, took us out of bed to take us to sleep in a special place, right?

Que era la Quinta Julieta, una residencia de los jesuitas en las afueras de Zaragoza.

Y al día siguiente fue cuando mi hermano mayor y yo, al ver aparecer a otro tío que venía a buscarnos, dijimos, bueno, ya sabemos lo que ha pasado. De repente lo comprendimos, lo intuimos, que había muerto nuestro padre, ¿no?

And the next day was when my older brother and I, seeing another uncle coming to look for us, said, well, we already know what happened. Suddenly we understood it, we sensed it, that our father had died, right?

Claro, yo en ese momento, con nueve años, yo lo que veía es a mi madre como una mujer, pues mayor, segura, de esas... I see it differently. If until now, I mean, if for a long time I had maintained the view of a son seeing his mother as an adult, solving problems, now what I have seen as an adult is the figure of my mother facing a destiny that overwhelmed her, that exceeded her, that surely shattered her for a long time, even though she, of course, could not show that devastation to her children.

Te acuerdas aquí de los grandes hitos de la infancia, Ignacio, pero también de anécdotas como, por ejemplo, la primera vez que escuchaste decir la expresión olala, ¿no? Que es un detalle menor, pero ilustra bien, yo creo, los mecanismos tan arbitrarios de la memoria. Me parece que la selección de anécdotas es vital en este tipo de libros, ¿no? ¿Cómo saber cuándo un recuerdo tiene la suficiente entidad como para ser rescatado del río tan caudaloso de la memoria?

You remember here the great milestones of childhood, Ignacio, but also anecdotes like, for example, the first time you heard the expression "olala," right? It's a minor detail, but I think it illustrates well the arbitrary mechanisms of memory. I think the selection of anecdotes is vital in this kind of books, don't you? How can one know when a memory has enough significance to be rescued from the flood of the memory river?

Sí, ¿por qué? De repente una cosa tan modesta como que apareciera un tío mío, un hermano mucho más joven que mi madre, que acababa de hacer un viaje por Francia y que de repente llegara a casa y dijera olala. Digo, qué cosa más cosmopolita. Hablamos también de una España así muy provinciana, en la que la gente no viajaba al extranjero. Hablamos de que de repente ese tío mío, que para mí era como de esos jóvenes modernos, ¿no?

Yes, why? Suddenly, a thing as modest as my uncle appearing, a brother much younger than my mother, who had just returned from a trip to France and suddenly came home and said hello. I mean, what a cosmopolitan thing. We're also talking about a very provincial Spain, where people didn't travel abroad. We're talking about how that uncle of mine, who for me was like one of those modern young people, right?

Sí, sí, sí.

Que eran capaces de pasarse un mes, un verano entero.

Un verano entero viajando por el extranjero, que era algo tan insólito. Y de repente llegara con cuatro o cinco frasecillas francesas. Nos parecía que eso ya nos ponía en contacto con el mundo, con las otras naciones importantes, ¿no?

A whole summer traveling abroad, which was something so unusual. And suddenly I would return with four or five little French phrases. It seemed to us that this already connected us with the world, with the other important nations, right?

A mí me encanta, por ejemplo, la forma en la que describes a tu madre a partir de gestos en apariencia insignificantes, ¿no? Como que le gustaba presumir de ser friolera o terminar las anécdotas diciendo un no te encanta.

I love, for example, the way you describe your mother through seemingly insignificant gestures, right? Like how she liked to show off being sensitive to the cold or ending anecdotes with a "don't you love it?"

Que siendo menudencia se antoja.

That it seems appealing even though it's a trifle.

Que se antojan más, no sé, más representativas de una personalidad que atributos más generales y abstractos como, por ejemplo, que era buena o severa o lo que fuera, ¿no? Me parece que esto es muy revelador, Ignacio, del poder de la anécdota concreta, ¿no?

What seems more appealing, I don't know, more representative of a personality than more general and abstract attributes like, for example, that she was kind or strict or whatever, right? It seems to me that this is very revealing, Ignacio, of the power of concrete anecdotes, right?

Que a veces despachamos como si fuera un género menor cuando creo que tiene un enorme poder de evocación.

Las novelas familiares, al fin y al cabo, las cosas que pasan no son grandes acontecimientos.

Family novels, after all, the things that happen are not great events.

Normalmente son los nacimientos, los matrimonios, las muertes, las enfermedades.

Usually, it is births, marriages, deaths, and illnesses.

Son los acontecimientos que van organizando la historia de esa familia.

They are the events that are shaping the history of that family.

Y lo que he hecho yo con mi familia, contando desde la historia de mis padres hasta que ya más o menos soy un poco más jovencillo y me voy a Barcelona en el año 82,

And what I have done with my family, starting from the history of my parents until I am a bit younger and I go to Barcelona in 1982,

pues es también aplicar un poco esas maneras de contar historias de familia que ya había desarrollado en otras novelas.

Y eso de los detalles y describir bien y construir bien los personajes a partir de cosas muy pequeñas, ¿no?

A partir de una frase que repiten de manera involuntaria o a partir de los cigarrillos que fuman o a partir de su obsesión.

Based on a phrase that they repeat involuntarily, or from the cigarettes they smoke, or from their obsession.

Por ejemplo, mi madre estaba obsesionada con la delgadez porque había sido una niña gordita, ¿no?

For example, my mother was obsessed with thinness because she had been a chubby child, right?

Y la llamaban pilón.

And they called her pilón.

Se llamaba Pilar pero la llamaban pilón, que era como una especie de vestigio de la época en que había sido gorda.

Her name was Pilar, but they called her Pilón, which was like a remnant of the time when she had been overweight.

Y de repente un día decidió que iba a ser flaca y lo fue toda su vida.

And one day she suddenly decided that she was going to be thin, and she was for her whole life.

Y tenía esa obsesión por la delgadez, ¿no?

Y al mismo tiempo la seguían llamando como cuando era niña que era gorda.

And at the same time, they still called her like when she was a child, when she was chubby.

Estaba pensando que con las memorias, Ignacio, pasa como con los cuadros abstractos, ¿no?

I was thinking that with memories, Ignacio, it's like with abstract paintings, right?

Que alguno podría tener la tentación de pensar que lo podría hacer cualquiera en la medida en que todos tenemos recuerdos, todos tenemos una familia, ¿no?

That someone might be tempted to think that anyone could do it since we all have memories, we all have a family, right?

El reto, claro, no reside en contar la vida de uno, sino en hacer que esa experiencia personalísima apele a los demás.

The challenge, of course, does not lie in telling one's life story, but in making that deeply personal experience resonate with others.

¿Eso cómo se hace?

How is that done?

Ya, sí, cómo hacer que una cosa tan particular y tan personal al mismo tiempo pueda tener una dimensión universal, ¿no?

Sure, yes, how to make something so particular and so personal at the same time have a universal dimension, right?

Piensa que al fin y al cabo familia tenemos todos, ¿no?

Think that after all, we all have family, right?

O sea que en teoría tenemos muchas cosas en común, los lectores y los que escribimos, y no sería tan difícil pues apelar a esa experiencia universal, ¿no?

So in theory we have many things in common, the readers and those of us who write, and it wouldn't be so difficult to appeal to that universal experience, right?

Y seguro que hay alguna anécdota, alguna historia, algún personaje que le resulta cercano y familiar al lector simplemente porque también han pasado por...

And surely there is some anecdote, some story, some character that feels close and familiar to the reader simply because they have also gone through...

o han conocido gente así o han pasado por experiencias similares, ¿no?

Either they have met people like that or they have gone through similar experiences, right?

Pero es que, bueno, el ser humano al fin y al cabo pues con pequeñas variaciones está siempre repitiendo las mismas cosas.

But it's just that, well, human beings, after all, are always repeating the same things with small variations.

O sea, las vidas de los seres humanos son muy parecidas.

In other words, the lives of human beings are very similar.

Sobre todo las vidas de los seres humanos de una época determinada, una sociedad determinada y una clase social determinada.

Above all, the lives of human beings of a specific time period, a specific society, and a specific social class.

Porque aquí yo no solo estoy contando mi vida, que en realidad pues tiene muy poco interés, ¿no?

Because here I am not just telling my life, which in reality has very little interest, right?

Sino que estoy contando también un poco la vida de una generación.

But I am also telling a bit about the life of a generation.

La vida de una España determinada, la vida de una generación que somos los boomers, que somos muchos, que somos casi todos de clase media,

que crecimos casi todos en una naciente clase media, que pasamos casi todos, muchos por la universidad, que tuvimos muchas experiencias compartidas.

Y entonces me parecía que en realidad nadie de mi generación se había tomado la molestia de contar pues eso, cómo éramos y cómo somos, ¿no?

And then it seemed to me that really no one from my generation had taken the trouble to tell, well, how we were and how we are, right?

Y cuando uno habla de sí mismo pues tiene la obligación también de hablar.

And when one talks about oneself, one also has the obligation to speak.

Hablar de los demás, porque hablar de uno mismo siempre es un ejercicio un poco ególatra y que conduce a nada, ¿no?

Talking about others, because talking about oneself is always a somewhat egotistical exercise that leads to nothing, right?

Hay tantos libros de memorias que parece que están escritos como para construirse la propia leyenda, ¿no?

There are so many memoirs that it seems they are written to build one's own legend, right?

Para edificar su propio mito.

Y a mí eso es lo que me parece feo e innecesario.

And to me, that's what seems ugly and unnecessary.

Lo que me parece bonito de los libros de memorias es cuando hablan de los demás o cuando la experiencia del que escribe se puede hacer extensiva a muchas otras personas.

What I find beautiful about memoirs is when they talk about others or when the writer's experience can be extended to many other people.

Puede ser compartida por otros.

It can be shared by others.

Pues precisamente vamos a hacer un alto en la conversación para escuchar.

Well, we are precisely going to take a break in the conversation to listen.

Otro pasaje de tu libro, Ignacio, en el que te refieres a tu relación con Javier Marías.
