You can think of it as a kind of routine, but as I said, Colm reacts very harshly to this and wants to walk away. This is where the conflict actually arises, and when Padre bothers Colm, Colm becomes even more hardened against this situation and tells Padre that if you continue to disturb me, every time you do, I will cut off one of my fingers.

You know, he is trying to intervene, asking why he is talking to my brother; he goes to one, then to the other, but over time he also starts to get bored with this situation.

So, the educated class is actually trying to escape from these absurdities in a way, and he is the one who leaves the island by boarding the first ship when he receives the first offer.

Colm also sometimes confronts him, so everyone on the island has a strained relationship with him.
