Could you share with us about your journey, the family you grew up in, and the education you received?

I want to particularly emphasize this point. I listened to you before, and I was very impressed during our previous interview as well.

Tabii. Ben 4 Mayıs 1985 yılında İstanbul'da doğdum. Ailemin ilk çocuğuyum, aşk çocuğuyum diyebilirim.

Of course. I was born on May 4, 1985, in Istanbul. I am the first child of my family; I can say I am a child of love.

Annem ve babam birbirlerini çok severek evlenmişler. İki erkek kardeşim var.

My parents got married, loving each other very much. I have two brothers.

Benim aslında bilimi olan merakım sanırım belki de buna benzer bir broadcastten veya bir televizyondan duymuşum.

Actually, my curiosity about science may have come from hearing it on a broadcast or from a television similar to this.

Oyun oynarken çakıl taşlarını alıp parçalamaya çalışıp içindeki atomu bulmaya çalışıyormuşum.

I was trying to pick up and break the pebbles while playing the game, attempting to find the atom inside.

Herkes bunun imkansız olduğunu söylüyormuş fakat ben yine de devam ediyormuşum.

Everyone said it was impossible, but I kept going anyway.

Ama bu bir şekilde ailemin benim bilimi olan merakımı anlamalarını sağlamış oldu.

But this somehow made my family understand my curiosity in science.

Ve babam bunun üzerine bana bir kitap hediye etti.

And my father gave me a book as a gift.

Madame Curie ile ilgili bir kitaptı. Sanırım ondan esinleneceğimi düşünmüştü.

It was a book about Madame Curie. I think she thought I would be inspired by it.

Fakat ben kitabı okuduğumda Madame Curie'nin eşi olan Pierre Curie'ye aşık oldum.

But when I read the book, I fell in love with Pierre Curie, who was Madame Curie's husband.

So I really liked the things he/she did.

Piyazoletrik denilen bir olguyu keşfediyor.

It discovers a phenomenon called piezoelectricity.

Yaptığı şeyler hiç başka bir yerden para almadan sadece kendi imkanlarıyla bir laboratuvar kuruyor.

What he does is set up a lab solely with his own resources without receiving money from anywhere else.

And there, he/she starts working.

Beni çok etkilemişti küçük bir çocuk olarak.

It had a huge impact on me as a small child.

As you mentioned later, the research I did actually started to take on a somewhat personal tone.

I never got to know my grandfather Hüseyin, who is my father's father.

Kendisi 28 yaşındayken kalp yetmezliği soruyordu.

He was experiencing heart failure when he was 28 years old.

As a result, he/she passes away.

And when I learned this, I set such a standard for myself.

It had a great impact on me, and I said okay, I will study physics.

Interestingly, there were mistakes and so on in the university entrance exam, but...

fizik bölümünde hiç yanlışım da olmadı.

I didn't make any mistakes in the physics department.

Tamam dedim bu iyi bir işaret.

I said okay, this is a good sign.

Ben fizik okumam gerekiyor.

I need to study physics.

Sörüven bölümü başladı.

The adventure section has begun.

Hacettepe Üniversitesi fizik mühendisliği bölümünde eğitim almaya başladım.

I started studying in the Department of Physics Engineering at Hacettepe University.

Ondan sonra da Sabancı Üniversitesi'nde,

After that, at Sabancı University,

master yaptım malzeme bilimi ve mühendisliğinde.

I completed a master's in materials science and engineering.

Sonra da Amerika'ya geldim Fulbright doktora bursunu kazanarak doktora eğitimimi almaya başladım.

Then I came to America by winning the Fulbright doctoral scholarship and began my doctoral studies.

Ondan sonra da MIT, Harvard ve şu anda bulunduğum MIT'deki kendi research grubumda,

After that, at MIT, Harvard, and in my own research group at MIT where I currently am,

araştırma grubumda öğrencilerimle birlikte vücutla uyumlu, esnek, elektronik aletler yapıyoruz.

In my research group, we are creating body-compatible, flexible electronic devices with my students.

Bu arada 28 yaşıma geldiğimde de, onu da söyleyeyim,

when I reach the age my grandfather died, this dream of mine, the heart-shaped program,

My mother is one of them.

Ben fizik okumak istediğimde,

When I wanted to study physics,

babam benim hep bir mimar olmamı istedi.

My father always wanted me to be an architect.

Ama ben mimar, yani kendimi böyle mimar olarak göremiyordum.

But I am an architect, I couldn't see myself as an architect like this.

Because I wanted to make flexible and foldable electronic devices.

Honestly, I couldn't find anyone in Turkey who does that.

And I was intending to look for a scholarship.

When I received a full scholarship from Sabancı University,

I went to Sabancı University.

I thought I needed to learn a bit about the materials as well.

O da dedik işte, Fulbright Interview.

He said, "Well, Fulbright Interview."

Fulbright'ları,

the Fulbrights,

söyleşi yapmaya gitti.

He went to have an interview.

Oradaki insanlarla konuşmaya gitti, dedi.

He said he went to talk to the people over there.

Ben de baktım, Fulbright neymiş hocam falan diye.

I also looked into what Fulbright is, you know.

Böyle merak ettim.

I was curious like that.

Sonra öğrendim ki,

Then I learned that,

Fulbright, Türkiye ve Amerika arasında verilen,

Fulbright is awarded between Turkey and America.

ortaklaşa verilen bir master bursu.

a jointly awarded master's scholarship.

Tabii ama o sırada Sabancı Üniversitesi'nden kabul almıştım.

Of course, but at that time I had received an acceptance from Sabancı University.

Sonra dedim ki,

Then I said,

ben bu bursa başvurayım.

I will apply for this scholarship.

Başvuracağım sırada da deadline'ın,

While I will be applying, the deadline is...

yani başvuru süresinin geçtiğini öğrendim.

So I found out that the application period has passed.

O zaman dedim, ben Sabancı Üniversitesi'ne gideyim,

Then I said, let me go to Sabancı University,

bir sene okuyayım.

Let me study for a year.

Bir sene boşa gitse de önemli değil.

It's no big deal even if a year is wasted.

Ondan sonraki sene kazanırsam eğer bu bursu,

If I win this scholarship in the following year,

Sabancı'dan Amerika'ya master yapmaya giderim diye düşünmüştüm.

I had thought about going to America for a master's after Sabancı.

Tabii bunların hepsi olurken,

Of course, all of this is happening while...

Avrupa, Asya, Amerika, bütün her yerde hocalara bakıyorum,

I am looking at teachers everywhere in Europe, Asia, and America.

Ve John Rogers diye bir hocayı keşfettim.

And I discovered a teacher named John Rogers.

Alanında çok iyi esnek ve çekilebilir aletler yapıyor.

He makes very good flexible and stretchable tools in his field.

I learned that he is at the University of Illinois.

Ve çok güzel bir şey oldu.

And a very beautiful thing happened.

2009 yılında Amerika fikrini değiştirdi.

In 2009, America changed its mind.

Doktora bursu vermeye başladı.

She started giving doctoral scholarships.

Ve benim Sabancı Üniversitesi'nde okuduğum bir yıl boşa gitmemiş oldu.

And my year studying at Sabancı University was not wasted.

Ve kendi alanımda da ilk sırada kazandım bu bursu.

And I won this scholarship first in my field as well.

Ve doktora eğitim almaya hak kazandım.

And I have earned the right to pursue a doctorate.

Ve Illinois'a gittim.

And I went to Illinois.

Hatta hatırlıyorum,

I even remember,

Fulbright Türkiye'deki ofisörler şey demişlerdi,

The Fulbright officers in Turkey had said,

ilgilenen arkadaşlar,

friends who are interested,

niye MIT'ye gitmiyorsun, Harvard'a gitmiyorsun,

Why aren't you going to MIT, why aren't you going to Harvard?

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign'e gidiyorsun diye.

You are going to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Ben de şey demiştim,

I was saying that too,

merak etmeyin MIT ve Harvard'a da gideceğim ama

Don't worry, I will also go to MIT and Harvard, but...

the teacher I want to go to is here,

I had never done anything like that in Turkey, I didn't know.

When I asked a question, it was difficult for the male students to respond.
