Hello, my name is Cengiz Erişen, I am from the Faculty of Economics at Yeditepe University.

Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü Öğretim Eğitimcisi olarak çalışmaktayım.

I work as a Faculty Educator in the Department of Political Science and International Relations.

Bu podcast yanında size hem biraz akademik profilimden hem de biraz akademik geçmişimden, eğitim hayatımdan bahsetmek istiyorum.

In this podcast, I would like to tell you a bit about my academic profile as well as my academic background and educational life.

Ben 1996 yılında Marmara Üniversitesi işletme bölümüne başladım.

I started the business department at Marmara University in 1996.

Ve ilk dönemde her öğrenci gibi çok heyecanlı ve güzel bir akademik yıl geçirmek, üniversite hayatına başlamayı arzu ettim.

And in the first semester, like every student, I was very excited and wished to have a beautiful academic year, eager to start university life.

Böyle de oldu. Terslerim de iyi gidiyordu. Başarılı olduğumu düşünüyordum.

It happened like this. My reverses were also going well. I thought I was successful.

Ama bir iki unsur vardı ki benim hayatım biraz daha değiştirmeme yardımcı oldu.

But there were one or two elements that helped me change my life a little more.

Bunlardan bir tanesi İstanbul'da ilk dönemim olduğu için çok farklı yerler ve farklı insanlarla tanışmayı, farklı yerleri gezmeyi arzu ediyordum.

Since this was my first period in Istanbul, I wanted to meet different places and different people, and to explore various locations.

Ve İstanbul'u tanımayı istiyordum. Bu tabii ki benim için önemli bir hedefti.

And I wanted to get to know Istanbul. This was of course an important goal for me.

Bunun yanında farklı kültürlerde, uluslararası ortamlarda da bulunmayı arzu ediyordum.

In addition, I desired to be in different cultures and international environments.

For this reason, I was trying to get involved in different clubs, student organizations, and environments.

Bu vesileyle 1997 yılında Isaac ile tanışma fırsatım oldu.

On this occasion, I had the opportunity to meet Isaac in 1997.

Isaac bir gönüllü öğrencilerin çalıştığı bir uluslararası örgüt.

Isaac is an international organization where volunteers work with students.

Çok da başarılı projeleri, programları var. Hala günümüzde var.

They have many successful projects and programs. They still exist today.

Ama en önemli bilinen programı o dönemde özellikle yani 2000 yıl öncesinde öğrencileri staj için farklı ülkelere göndermek

But the most important known program at that time, especially around 2000 years ago, was sending students to different countries for internships.

ve Türkiye'de staj yapmak üzere davet etmek ve o insanlar için firmalar, kurumlar bulmak.

And inviting to do an internship in Turkey and finding companies and institutions for those people.

Bunun yanında tabii Isaac, sosyal sorumluluğun, küreselleşme fikrinin çok yeşertildiği ve eğitimlerle verildiği bir kurumdu.

In addition, of course, Isaac was an institution where social responsibility and the idea of globalization were heavily nurtured and provided through training.

Benim içinde bulunduğum dönemde hala da çok aktif sosyal vatandaş yaratma adına, dünya vatandaşı yaratma adına çok önemli programları olduğunu biliyorum.

I know that there are very important programs aimed at creating active social citizens and global citizens during my current period.

Ve ben de 1908 yılında üniversiteyle beraber Isaac ile de gönüllü olarak çalışmaya...

And I also volunteered to work with Isaac alongside the university in 1908...

I started. I had the chance to make friends from different universities.

Benim bulunduğum üniversiteden de, Marmara Üniversitesi'nden de arkadaşlarım vardı.

I had friends from both the university I was at and from Marmara University.

Ama bunun dışında İstanbul Üniversitesi, Boğaziçi Üniversitesi, İstanbul Teknik Galatasaray Üniversitesi gibi farklı üniversitelerden arkadaşlarla tanışma şansım oldu.

But aside from that, I had the chance to meet friends from different universities such as Istanbul University, Bogazici University, and Istanbul Technical University Galatasaray University.

Ama en güzeli, Isaac'in aslında yaz döneminde Türkiye'yi İstanbul'a getirmiş olduğu öğrencilerle tanışma ve buluşma imkanıydı.

But the best part was the opportunity to meet and connect with the students that Isaac had actually brought to Istanbul during the summer term.

Bu vesilede çok farklı ülkelerden ayrıldım.

On this occasion, I parted ways with many different countries.

Avrupa ve Amerika başta olmak üzere dünyanın çeşitli ülkelerinden stajyerler, staj yapacak öğrenciler İstanbul'a geliyordu.

Interns from various countries around the world, especially Europe and America, were coming to Istanbul to do internships.

Biz de onlarla ilgileniyorduk, vakit geçiriyorduk.

We were also spending time with them, hanging out.

Hem akademik olarak işletme ile alakalı disiplin derslerini alırken, bir yandan da uluslararasılaşma adına farklı insanlarla tanışma şansım oluyordu.

While taking academic courses related to business, I also had the chance to meet different people in terms of internationalization.

Ve hayatımda, daha öncesinde gitmemiştim.

And in my life, I had not gone before.

1998 yılında ilk yurtdışı ziyaretimi İsviçre'ye yaptım.

In 1998, I made my first trip abroad to Switzerland.

Isaac'in düzenlediği bir konferansa katılma şansım oldu.

I had the chance to attend a conference organized by Isaac.

Bu konferansta hem Isaac'e bazı organizasyonlar yapılıyordu, hem de bunun yanında bazı eğitimler alınıyordu.

In this conference, some organizations were being arranged for Isaac, and alongside that, some training was being provided.

Hiç unutamadım bir eğitimde, zaman planlaması üzerine zaman planlaması olmuştur.

I have never forgotten a training where there was time management on time management.

Çok etkilemişti ve çok beni yönlendirdiğini düşünüyorum.

It had a great impact on me and I think it guided me a lot.

So, during the early years of university, while I was trying to carry out my lessons as well as possible academically,

I tried to take on especially important roles within Isaac to participate in activities and social events.

I can say that this has enriched me a lot.

But the experience that fundamentally changed my brain academically and transformed me as a person is...

99 yılında dönemimi, o dönemlerde üniversite pek rahat dondurulamıyordu, eğitim çok rahat dondurulamıyordu.

In 1999, it was not very easy to freeze my semester; during those times, it was not very easy to freeze education either.

Ben o dönemde eğitimi dondurma kararı alarak bir yıl boyunca Isaac aracılığıyla Brezilya'da,

I made the decision to suspend my education during that period and spent a year in Brazil through Isaac.

bir sivil toplum örgütünde, kuruluşunda çalışma kararı verdim.

I decided to work in a non-governmental organization during its establishment.

Bu kuruluşun adı Crusade for Children diye geçiyordu.

The name of this organization was Crusade for Children.

Tamamen Rio de Janeiro'nun içerisinde bulunan çok dar gelirli ailelerin, çocuklarının veya orada yaşayan gençlerin bir meslek edinebilmesi

The ability for very low-income families, children, or young people living there in the heart of Rio de Janeiro to acquire a profession.

ve çocuklarının bakımıyla ilgilenen bir sivil toplum kuruluşu.

and a non-governmental organization that deals with the care of children.

Ve farklı örgütlerden, devlet birimlerinden, büyük elçiliklerden destek toplayarak hayatta kalan bir sivil toplum kuruluşuydu.

It was a surviving non-governmental organization that gathered support from different organizations, state agencies, and embassies.

Yani neden Brezilya diye tabii o dönemde çok soruldu.

So why Brazil, of course, was often asked at that time.

Yani birçok sebebi vardı ama en önemlisi ben farklı bir deneyim kazanmayı arzu ediyordum.

So there were many reasons, but the most important one was that I desired to gain a different experience.

Birçok arkadaşım bu dönemde Avrupa'da çeşitli yerlere, seyahatlere gitti.

Many of my friends traveled to various places in Europe during this period.

Bazıları staj yapmaya gidiyordu, bazıları sadece gezine gidiyordu.

Some were going for internships, while others were just going for a trip.

Of course, since it is close to Europe,

Honestly, at that time, I wanted it to be a different place as an opportunity that I might never get again in my life.

And there had been an offer from Brazil.

Ve yani aklımda tabii ki hem bir toplum kuruluşunda çalışarak biraz daha o sosyal sorumluluk bilincini kendi içinde de yerleştirmeye çalışmak

And so, of course, in my mind is trying to instill a bit more social responsibility within myself by working in a community organization.

And there was also the desire to actively try to do this, along with a bit of seeing the world in very different places and traveling.

Our preparation phase, of course, wasn't easy because Portuguese is spoken in Brazil, but at that time I,

So, in 1999, I couldn't find anyone to take Portuguese lessons with right away.

İspanyolca çok daha ilgi çekici bir dildi o dönemde.

Spanish was a much more interesting language at that time.

O nedenle ben de Nişantaşı'nda bir İspanyolca kursuna başlamıştım.

For that reason, I had also started a Spanish course in Nişantaşı.

Hiç unutmuyorum.

I never forget.

There is also a crossroads there.

Trafik işlerinin olduğu tek yol gider ama hemen sağ tarafta çok güzel bir pastane ve onun üzerinde birinci katlı bir İspanyolca kursu vardı.

There is only one road where the traffic works, but there is a very nice pastry shop on the right side and above it, there was a first-floor Spanish course.

Orada ders almaya başladım.

I started taking lessons there.

Ki İspanyolca ile beraber daha sonra Portekizce öğreneceğimi düşünerek.

Thinking that I will learn Portuguese later along with Spanish.

Çünkü çok beğendim zaten dilleri.

Because I really liked the languages anyway.

Ama tabii ki bu Rio'da, Rio de Janeiro'da tutmadı.

But of course, this didn't hold in Rio, in Rio de Janeiro.

Çünkü Rio'daki aksam, kullanılan Portekizce çok daha kuvvetli bir aksam.

Because the Portuguese used in Rio is a much stronger system.

Çok daha J'lerin, G'lerin terapuzu bildiği bir dil.

A language in which much more of the J's and G's know the therapy.

Onun için ilk dört ay Brezilya'ya gittiğimde hiçbir şey konuşamadığım insanları dinlediğimi hatırlıyorum.

That's why I remember listening to people I couldn't speak to when I went to Brazil for the first four months.

Tabii ki İngilizce ile iletişime geçebiliyorduk, konuşabiliyorduk ama oradaki arkadaşların hepsi konuşamıyordu.

Of course, we could communicate in English, we could speak, but not all of the friends there could speak.

Ve ben genel olarak hayatımda diğer yani çalıştığım işlerimde veya dışarıya çıktığımda İngilizce ile sürekli iletişime geçemiyordum.

And generally in my life, I couldn't constantly communicate in English in other jobs I worked or when I went out.

O nedenle bir şekilde yavaş yavaş Portekizce'yi keşfetmem gerekti.

For that reason, I needed to gradually discover Portuguese in some way.

Bu da çok kolay oldu diyemem haliyle.

I can't exactly say this was very easy, naturally.

İlk dört ay ama çok sıkı bir şekilde insanlar dinlediğimi diyemem.

I can't say that people listened very closely in the first four months.

Televizyon programlarını dinlemeye çalıştığım, işte arkadaşlarla konuşmaya çalıştığımı hatırlıyorum.

I remember trying to listen to television programs and trying to talk with colleagues at work.

Ve bu tabii ki beni çok farklı bir yere kültürel olarak, farklı bir yere götürdüğü, farklı insanlarla tanıştırdığı.

And of course, this has taken me culturally to a very different place, introducing me to different people.

O bir kısmı tabii ki ilk önce şoktu ama daha sonraki kısmı.

Of course, the first part was shock, but the later part.

İşinin kendi gelişimi için hem de yani işiyle alakalı farklı bir kültürde, farklı bir yerde bir şey üretiyor olması gerçekten inanılmaz bir haz veriyor.

It provides a truly incredible pleasure that they are producing something in a different culture, in a different place, both for their own development and related to their work.

Ve insanı çok tatmin edici, önemli bir gelişim için de önemli bir deneyimdi diye düşünüyorum.

And I think it was a significant experience for a very satisfying and important development for a person.

Rio de Janeiro'nun kendine ait tabii ki güzelliklerinin yanında çevresi ve Brezilya'nın genelinde gezilebilecek, görülebilecek çok fazla imkan vardı.

In addition to its own natural beauties, Rio de Janeiro had many opportunities to explore and see in its surroundings and throughout Brazil.

Bu nedenle ben de bir 6-7 ay kadar Rio'da yaşayarak stajımı devam ettirdim.

For this reason, I continued my internship by living in Rio for about 6-7 months.

Çalıştım epeyce, çok farklı.

I worked quite a lot, very different.

Yine Isaac aracılığıyla buraya gittiğim için, oradaki Isaac toplantılarına katılma şansım oldu.

Since I went here through Isaac again, I had the chance to attend the meetings of Isaac there.

Yine farklı kültürlerden, ülkelerden gelen insanlarla tanışma şansım oldu.

I had the chance to meet people from different cultures and countries again.

Çok farklı bir uluslararası ortama geçiş yaptığını düşünüyorum.

I think you have transitioned to a very different international environment.

Bununla beraber Portekizce'yi de aslında 4 ay sonra çözmeye başladım.

However, I actually started to solve Portuguese after 4 months.

Ve biraz daha kendime güvenince, yani 6-7. aydan sonra belki Brezilya için biraz gezebileceğimi düşündüm.

And when I gained a bit more confidence, after about the 6th or 7th month, I thought that maybe I could travel a little for Brazil.

Ve işte herkesin o dönemde yani günümüzde de çok aktiftir ama backpacking diye bilinir.

And here, everyone was very active during that period, and even now, but it is known as backpacking.

Hani şu pandemi döneminde belki biraz daha durgunlaştı.

You know, maybe it became a bit quieter during that pandemic period.

However, by backpacking for about a month, making a wide circle in Brazil from Rio down to Sao Paulo, heading south.

After going and then visiting a place called Pantanal, which has the most interesting and magnificent nature in the world.

It also coincided with Marten because it was Brazil. Carnival.

But this is a carnival that is generally celebrated in Brazil. It was different in Rio.

I remember participating in the carnival in Salvador.
